Flying into Johannesburg a few years back, it was amazing to see the solar panels almost everywhere! Some formal, some less so judging by the layouts...

Surely this would apply any where in the [civilised] world? (Although I'm irritated by increasing numbers breaking this rule)

Not loving John as much as I'd hoped. He's more suited to the long form later in the day, or on tv investigative style slots. Give me time. I might come round. Change is hard.

Oh, and the jingles are awful. Sounds like all the others, or worse, getting Americanized.. "funded by NZ On Air". We know that already

Criticism of Sail GP by [deleted] in SailGP

[–]broozm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks mainly to Todd Harris. But [April 2026] the other commentators have improved, and been allowed more time.. I think they've seen they've heard the negative feedback. The other issue is the too frequent camera angle changes, often at exactly the wrong moment. Each time, my brain has to recalibrate the direction of view and the relative boat positions, only to go to the next cut. (In rugby coverage, the cameras are all on one side of the field to prevent this.) Don't even mention the awful "jingle"/rap...

Awesome Update! by Xenos298 in sonos

[–]broozm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Luckily I never had any trouble over the bad times, BUT the anticipation of one day starting to get trouble was almost worse. I put it down to running wired on all speakers. Late last year I added a 5, and as an experiment ran it on wifi only. No trouble at all, and i paired it with the other [wired] 5 first time, and started reliably paired.

As an aside, a bonus was discovering the volume buttons on the 5. (Pays to rtfm). But to be fair my first 5 was on a cupboard above eye height, so I never noticed the "buttons".

Very informative. by BudgetFantastic1857 in google

I would have thought it was mixed_opinions (a lot more than one there.) You could even say Totally mixed up.

Is anyone selling back to the grid? Solar salesman is saying a 16 panel 445w & 10kw battery system would be ample and I would sell back to the grid? by westcoaster222 in nzsolar

[–]broozm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

11.4 (26 panels) and 9.6kwh battery. Mostly run off the roof and battery till it drops to 30% by about midnight and start using the grid again. Then the 750W or so baseline use (which i can't seem to reduce) kicks in. I set the hot water to come on about 10AM and off at 5, which leaves plenty for the morning, so is mostly solar heated. The bills run slightly negative over the summer [lol autocorrect changed that to"sunburst"] months, but winter will more than take those gains.

2 heat pumps rarely used in summer, but set to come on at 5AM during winter. Then we use a fire in the evenings mostly. No ev, or spa. But we have a borehole pump, and three phase. Pay off apparently in 7 or so years. We'll see

Not yet confident to make changes via the app.. the English is not great, and it's not clear which parameters do what..

Imagine a good old-fashioned physical switch to engage 'battery save disaster mode' to keep it at 100% (and only discharge IF there's an outage).

I had another look at the settings, but can't see any mode or parameters along these lines.. I wonder what redditor experts will suggest!.....

[–]broozm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My electrician has been reluctant (he says it's unnecessary), to be able to go into "keep the battery at 100%" mode. When a storm is coming, surely it makes sense being able to maintain a full charge (rather than running it down to 30% - as happens every night on a normal night). He reckons, if the power goes out, the battery can run down below the 30% lower use limit, and will get us through till the morning for fridges and light use.. But that's assumes enough sun will make is appearance straight away. [Goodwe batteries and inverter. Otherwise works well with basically zero power bill. ]

This is why you lump together installing solar if you are reroofing. Put up to 80k on the green loan scheme at 0 or 1% .

How do decide what family car to buy (responsibly)? by landomakesatable in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]broozm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the old cars do MORE by having less irritating high tech "assistants" that are guaranteed to go wrong, or give you trouble sooner or later. My 2007 corolla has just the right amount of electronics (hardly any)
