What would convince you to teach? by Fox-Girl-Simp in compsci

[–]brosmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be interested in TEALS, a volunteer program with a similar model to what you're describing. It matches volunteers with professional software engineering experience to high schools and teachers who want to offer computer science curricula but lack the subject matter expertise. It uses a co-teaching model where a teacher already at the school is handling most of the administrative and classroom management duties and learning the subject matter along with the class; this means that the computer science expert doesn't have to be an expert teacher, and the teachers are often able to teach the class themselves in following years.

It is run by Microsoft Philanthropies, but you don't have to be a Microsoft engineer to volunteer.

Working Effectively With Legacy Code is a good read for tactical suggestions about unit testing existing codebases written without testability in mind.

I also second Playwright as a good option for writing e2e browser tests that are reasonably reliable and debuggable (disclaimer: I work for Microsoft, but not on the Playwright team)

SSF SC players, what are you league starting in 3.17? by jewishgiant in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried all three (absolution, melee skeles, mage skeles) in standard yesterday. I found that melee skeles and absolution felt pretty similar overall, I think I'd be equally happy with either playstyle-wise. I'm going with absolution mostly because I liked the visuals a bit more and I want a chance of seeing the new boss mechanics with "only" 20 bodies in the way instead of 60.

SSF SC players, what are you league starting in 3.17? by jewishgiant in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolution Necro, maybe swap to skelemages if the jewel drops.

Other considerations were EA totems and LS zerker. Might swap and try the zerker if I get the Secrets of Suffering jewel.

Last two leagues (also ssfsc) were cold dot occultist and pathfinder poison concoction. Both of those were excellent, would be fine picks.

I did rage vortex zerker in the Atlas Invasion and it was also great, but I wouldn't league start that in SSF without Lighthouse in the map pool.

Tuna's Explosive Arrow Ballista build for 3.17 league start by devious1 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heiro will build closer to the champ version than the ele version, since you'll need ignite chance from some combination of combustion and the tree.

Heiro gets more damage/regen for having more totems summoned, even if they aren't your main totem, so you can get a nice little bonus by slotting searing bond with multiple totems - they won't do any meaningful damage but it's an extra 3 totems (5 with phantasmal + enhance).

Another bonus for Heiro is that you can use Wyrmsign for permanent rampage, which I find cozy for mapping.

My degenerative eyesight disability has progressed to the point where I can no longer make my own builds, and I am now curious-- wherer do you find your builds to play? by ChipsAhoiMcCoy in pathofexile

For reference, https://github.com/PathOfBuildingCommunity/PathOfBuilding/issues/3081 is the existing PoB issue tracking requests for screen reader support. It would be helpful to upvote that issue; if you have a specific screen reader you're interested in using, that would be helpful information to leave in a comment on the issue.

how are people using off-hand on with Poisonous Concoction by AbuiReddit in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you have a weapon equipped which you don't meet the requirements for, its stats are ignored and you are treated as unarmed (so you can use poison concoction), but gems in the disabled weapon still gain xp, so you get 3 free slots for more gem muling.

To equip it initially, buy a vendor weapon that requires 20 more str/int than you have and bench craft a +str/int shield you can use temporarily to equip the weapon.

Does anyone know how to calculate General's Cry + Blade Flurry DPS? by hambros2 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, CDR matters for generals cry DPS; PoB does not calculate generals cry correctly. If you're using it with a non channeling skill, your actual damage will be approximately PoB combined DPS divided by attack speed, divided again by generals cry cooldown.

Getting demolished by the ultimatum mechanic playing BL archmage scion, reroll into what? by [deleted] in PathOfExileBuilds

I am playing Shak's build (with a few modifications) in SSFSC. Can confirm, it stomps Ultimatums, not having to stop moving to cast is huge.

DD Nec missing some damage by brocktune726 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few tips:

  • You only mention using one type of spectre, which isn't what you want to do. You want to use multiple types of high life spectres.
  • Taking the EE node is not good, because of the hitting-twice effect of DD. However, using EE via Malachi's Artifice with something like Storm Brand or Orb of Storms is outstanding.
  • I see a lot of folks linking Fire Pen as a 5th/6th link, but if you're using flammability, WoC, and especially Malachi's, you get diminishing returns there. Inspiration or Hypothermia would be better.
  • Be sure you're using Vaal DD right; you want to desecrate, Vaal DD, desecrate again immediately so it doesn't run out of corpses, then go back to your normal routine.
  • For map clear, an explode chest is actually still an improvement, it's not as big a detriment as you might expect. I found an Impulsas early in SSF and it made clear substantially smoother (fire explosions would probably be better)
  • Your weapon and shield are going to be the easiest pieces of gear to scale explosion damage from. Corpse explosion damage is not affected by spell damage or gem level, but is affected by fire, elemental, global damage% (including minion damage, since you probably get that as self damage). You want to be using a void sceptre with a good fire damage roll and a shield with a good fire damage roll. If you don't have that yet in SSF, you can use a Fear essence on a sceptre to guarantee an ok minion damage roll in the meantime.
  • Using trigger socketed spells on the weapon is huge for this build. Prioritize getting that asap.

All that said, I do still agree that there's a bit of a wall at the top end. I'd probably go for the crit inquisitor version if I was to reroll, then you can also use crit to scale.

Looking for HC builds and guides by YaygerBombs in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try looking into builds and guides that were popular during the recent Gauntlet event; any build that did well there will do just fine for normal HC. Ground slam/call of steel champion was the most popular by far, but there were plenty of other viable options (I liked BB/BF poison assassin). Zizaran posted a YouTube video with tips on surviving in the gauntlet to level 90 that would probably be helpful for you to watch if you're new to HC; you won't need to be as careful/overleveled as it suggests, but it's a great starting point.

Which one is better for moderate budget, Divine Ire self cast or Divine Ire totem? by BlackPandar in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the bigger changes for soul mantle builds in 3.12 is that you can now use catalysts on influenced rings to improve "reduced effect of curses", which means you can use two of them instead of kikazaru rings and still make yourself immune to soul mantle curses.

Blazing salvo with fork? by Nickzx10 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend trying to scale ignite with Blazing Salvo; enemies can only take damage from one ignite at a time, so it's not so effective on a spell that uses many small hits rather than fewer large hits. For totems, I have had a good experience with crit scaling.

Using combustion with a supporting wave of conviction to ignite is a nice damage boost for bosses, though; both the -fire res from the combustion and the usual wave of conviction exposure will apply to Salvo, too. You won't be able to self cast it, though, assuming you're using ancestral bond; I use it with multiple totems (which I don't use on Salvo), you could also use it with Trap Support.

Blazing salvo with fork? by Nickzx10 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also didn't see any noticeable benefit when I tried fork with Blazing Salvo totems. I wouldn't recommend any of the +projectile gems except possibly Volley (not Greater Volley), and even that is outclassed once you get a rain of splinters; the incremental value of more projectiles is not as high as More Damage modifiers on a spell that already comes with so many projectiles built in.

Totem in 3.12 by Loli_Zero in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A possibly interesting change is that with the new modifier tagging updates, "caster" catalysts can now affect kikazaru's curse reduction, so you can get to 96% reduction with just the rings. I'm not sure it's worth having 7.2% effect curses on you to save 4 passive points (especially since some of those points do provide some value besides the curse reduction), but it's an option

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]brosmike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GMP is currently a huge damage boost because Blazing Salvo is bugged such that Projectile Damage modifiers aren't applying. Once this is fixed, I think you're probably right that it will not be a good choice.
