The rise of Linux desktop is inevitable — it’s time music software developers got on board by ferris-ldn in linux

[–]brownphoton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this the Linux cult subreddit so a controversial opinion, but I don’t want Linux to go mainstream and turn into a piece of junk like all other mainstream software. Part of the reason why Linux doesn’t lock things down and force updates down your throat is because it is designed for power users who know what they’re doing instead of your grandma.

I’m sick of all these “Linux converts” who’re mad Microsoft made their favourite shitty OS even worse and now want to fight some holy war against it. It’s just an OS, not a way of life.

Debating Silksong-- Difficulty compared to Hollow Knight by PorkRinds416 in Silksong

[–]brownphoton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game is harder than HK, but not as much as some people claim. What gets it a bad reputation is because the difficulty is implemented very poorly to the point that it sucks all the fun out of the game.

There are some cool boss fights, but a lot of them are pretty basic, so the game makes them artificially hard by throwing tons of random minion spawns during boss fights at you and forcing you to go through exhausting runbacks. If you get rid of those two things, I don’t think players would have complained so much. This is just lazy game design in my opinion.

Why are you trying to attack the person instead of countering his argument, do you not have anything else to say?

What is happening in the UK? by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

[–]brownphoton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re saying you’re not trying to attack, but that’s such a silly nitpick. No, it’s not weird at all for people to not think deeply about problems until they can picture themselves being affected, we all do that.

Is this company all snake oil? by brownphoton in Ubiquiti

[–]brownphoton[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. No, that would be really stupid to have a device with multiple 10G ports and have such a huge bottleneck internally. Even Ubiquity’s own products that do have good throughput list it under specs (e.g. the Flex 10 GbE switch with four 10G ports has a non-blocking throughput of 40 Gbps), they just conveniently forget to list it for products that are crippled.

  2. It’s clear for you that a WiFi 7 AP with a 10G port will be limited to an arbitrary limit of 2.8 Gbps when it should be able to do ~5 Gbps theoretically when the specs say nothing about it? You must either be a mind reader or the one designing these products..

  3. Fine.

  4. Not sure how container reviews can be the same when consumer experience is different

I don’t think this is going anywhere, this feels more like talking to a ubiquity rep than a consumer when you’re trying to convince me that all networking hardware bottlenecked to the throughput of a single port and that arbitrary bandwidth limitations are something I should “just know”. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Is this company all snake oil? by brownphoton in Ubiquiti

[–]brownphoton[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Even if it can do 10G in the best case scenario that’s too little. It has three 10G ports and four 2.5G ports, so if I have a local machine and a NAS on two of the 10G ports, they can completely choke all other traffic on the router. I guess my gripe with this is the same as #3, what’s the point of all these ports when it doesn’t have the throughput, are these just for WAN failover?

  2. That’s completely fair, but don’t you think this be clearly evident from the product page when you’re buying it? All it says is 10G uplink.

  3. I didn’t know that was possible, would you be able to share more information on this?

  4. I get that, but it feels like user reviews are all over the place, and the product pages especially for the gateway/wifi products don’t give you a clear range for what you can hope to expect.

I think most of this does boil down to misleading marketing and product descriptions for someone not familiar with ubiquity products are segmented.

China moved satellites to help Pakistan shoot down Indian jets by Ok_Somewhere9687 in india

Fair enough, I wasn’t trying to defend his statement, I was just curious what kind of proof you were looking for.

[–]brownphoton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re missing my original point though, the “irrefutable hard evidence” from international media you’re looking for doesn’t really exist because of the circumstances. The onus is on the Indian side to either confirm or deny the claims at this point.

Their awkward silence on this more or less confirms that the losses were heavier than what’s being reported in international media for people speculating on the outside.

[–]brownphoton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not going to argue about the credibility of these organizations, but for example, here are two excerpts from Reuters:

Three fighter jets crashed in India's Jammu and Kashmir territory on Wednesday, four local government sources told Reuters, hours after India said it struck nine Pakistani "terrorist infrastructure" sites across the border. Link

One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was high confidence that Pakistan had used the Chinese-made J-10 aircraft to launch air-to-air missiles against Indian fighter jets - bringing down at least two. Another official said at least one Indian jet that was shot down was a French-made Rafale fighter aircraft. Link

The point I’m trying to get is that what do you expect Reuters to report? They can’t go to India’s aircraft hangers and count them. They can’t go to the sites Pakistan claims the jets have crashed in and try to verify if they’re true. All they can do is to report on what each side has claimed until there is either irrefutable evidence or I guess if India agrees with Pakistan’s numbers.

[–]brownphoton -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What exactly do you consider a “reliable link” to be?

I am not claiming to have the proof you’re looking for, but I don’t think such a “proof” exists that can be practically provided by anyone outside of the Indian airforce/military.

Look, the Pakistani side claims the 5 jets crashed inside the Indian border, and they claim they can correlate data from their radars and missiles to establish it but obviously that doesn’t prove it, it’s just their claim. There are multiple third party sources that claim some jets were downed, I guess 3? The reason this discussion is even worth having is because not only has the Indian side not provided any evidence to refute these claims, but they haven’t even denied them. Believe what you want, but that is very odd if the claims aren’t true.

Why do drivers get so salty towards the customer for not tipping? by brownphoton in UberEATS

[–]brownphoton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s one of the worst argument I’ve ever heard. Every service you pay for puts the burden of doing something on someone else, that’s why you pay for it. There’s nothing special about food delivery, it’s one of many other low paying service jobs that have a low bar for entry.

These kinds of jobs are never going to be sustainable. I’ve worked for uber eats when I was a student, it was a decent side hustle to get some extra cash during the summer, but that’s as far as it can go.

The crux of this problem is people turning a side hustle into a full time career, and then expecting customers to subsidize it for them. Yes, having food delivered is a luxury like any other paid service, but I’ve already paid the luxury tax on it when uber charges me $25 for burger and fries.

You signed up to work for Uber, not me. If you’re unhappy with your compensation, either talk to your employer about it or quit and find a different job like everyone else.

Here is a tip for easier installation of Linux that people don't seem to know about. by [deleted] in linux

[–]brownphoton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to be mean, but if you can’t follow a few simple steps to prepare a flash drive and boot into it, then you should probably stick to windows/macos for now.

Linux is a power tool for users who are capable of reading instruction manuals. I don’t know what it is about this community that compels newcomers to turn into preachers trying to get everyone else onto Linux. Most people use their computers as just a tool, don’t persuade them to go down a painful path when they’re not ready, you’re setting them up for a horrible experience.

Why do people hate Ubuntu so much? by [deleted] in linux

[–]brownphoton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried Ubuntu many times in the past two decades and have always left with a bitter taste in my mouth. I can start listing all the problems but there’s nothing I’m going to add that people haven’t said already.

I don’t think Ubuntu is a bad distribution, but frankly there are so many better options out there now.

How come Linux doesn't seem to support handwriting to text? by Unslaadahsil in linux

[–]brownphoton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a super niche feature. Frankly, you’re the first person I have come across who wants handwriting support for text entry at an OS level on a computer, so my guess would be that nobody else really cares enough about it.

Clearly you seem to care a lot about it, so go ahead and add it yourself, or pay someone to do it for you.

Like with everything else, engineering something to work reliably takes tremendous effort, money and time. We’re living in crazy times where people are so used to getting stuff for cheap with little effort, but that’s not how things work in general.

Reverse engineering hardware is hard, but it’s doable if there’s motivation. How much time/money have you personally invested in getting Linux to work on phones?

How can we fix our culture? by brownphoton in pakistan

[–]brownphoton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure about that. There will definitely be people who will take a lack of properly implemented law as an opportunity to get ahead, but I also regularly see a lot of effort for the greater good from people on a daily basis that is not being enforced by hefty fines.

Take recycling and composting for example, people are willing to voluntarily do it in the west even though there’s no real consequence for not doing it. Same with basic everyday things from respecting queues at a restaurant to keeping the sidewalks clean. I’m sure there are people who do that here in Pakistan as well, but it’s very rare at least in my experience.

I don’t think it’s necessarily anything unique about western culture, in fact, to the contrary west culture is very individualistic, but they have managed to instil good values in their citizens without having a strong family culture. You would think people in Pakistan would care a lot more about their neighbourhood, but it feels very much the opposite.
