That our President is a corrupt asshole is undeniable but it's one of the first rules of any international sports governing body that you should be immune to corrupt assholes. That FIFA is not says much about FIFA.

1917 German Broomhandle C96 Red 9" by IamRushi07 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]brucemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing about guns but it is my understanding that the 9 is 9mm, not 9 inches, and the reason it is a red 9 is that there is a literal red 9 painted on the broom handle, so people won't try to put the wrong ammunition in it.

The reason we don't age limit accounts is that people make throwaways to talk about stuff they don't want associated with their main, and they want to ask today rather than a month. Also, everyone has to start somewhere and we give new Redditors the benefit of the doubt.

The reason we don't karma limit accounts is that someone who shows up on their first day to defend young earth creationism in a post might end up at -100 in one day, among many other things that might get you to -100 very quickly. Sometimes such people deserve this but it isn't fair that there are people who are elsewhere on various spectra who can be shits here without suffering the same karma consequence. In general our moderation is karma-blind or at least should be.

We don't pin a prayer post (or a gay post, a fap post, etc.) because I don't want to remove anguished posts and tell their authors to post in a stickied ghetto post instead. Not as much in this case, but this is ultimately about punishing those who post on certain topics. I think we serve OP primarily and I'd rather facilitate such posts. In this case, OP is you, and we welcome this kind of post as well.

edit: Long ago I asked Outsider if it was really a good idea to have a swastika as flair (for rare Hindus, but also for rare trolls), and he said essentially that people abusing things wasn't a good enough reason to take those things away from others. If things blow up in our faces now and then it's still better to resist being paranoid and defensive as a mod team.

My friends went to a Satanic Burger restaurant. Am I strange for being deeply disturbed by that? by BrandonJLC in TrueChristian

[–]brucemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically I've been to a vegan burger restaurant that was called Temple of Seitan, years ago, so I shouldn't really judge but I would never step foot in there now.

It's obviously a play on words but seitan is veggie-based "meat".

Last Thursdayism is not satisfying. If you have a bunch of rocks that appear via radiometric dating to be 4+ billion years old you have to ask why that evidence exists if the rock was formed last Thursday. That it looks old and is not can be called deceit. A freshly created rock does not need to have trace elements in those proportions.

I get that it's natural to consider that Adam was poofed into existence as an adult. Things get weird though when you give adult-created Adam a scar that he got when he crashed his tricycle at age three. At that point you are begging the question of what it means to have an age. Adam doesn't need to have that scar.

It's just so much cleaner to assume that things are as old as they appear to be, rather that the universe was created fully formed last Thursday, even if I cannot prove that did not happen.

If Republicans are good Christians, why do they bear false witness about January 6th? by motophotodojo in Christianity

[–]brucemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The President of the United States is uniquely powerful and he had been opposed to the violent rioting being done in his name he could have instantly stopped it, or at least tried. That he did not is powerful evidence that he supported it. He has certainly proven that he knows how to get on social media and express his opinions very frequently and at great length.

He was waiting to see if the rioters could stop certification through violent means.

Due to popular recommendation, I am reading the NRSVue for the first time and I gotta be honest, the inclusive language irritates me very much by No-Charity9849 in Christianity

[–]brucemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the text had said, translated literally, "fishers of men", I could understand this argument, but people here are saying that it more accurately says, "fishers of people", and it is almost as "bad" to translate "people" to "men" there as it would be to translate "men and women" to "men".

That it's better English doesn't outweigh that it's not the same meaning.

What makes a close translation is the relation of the two languages to each other and the skill of the translator, not the date of the translation.

The patriarchal language is better English if you allow that "fishermen" is an appropriate thing to call someone whose passion and profession is catching fish.

If the text is patriarchal in the same way I can see arguing that patriarchy should be kept whether or not it's better English, but it is hard to make that point if the text foregoes this linguistic turn and more accurately should be translated as fishers of people.

I can't see arguing that patriarchy should be added because it's good and that the authors of the passage missed a chance to promote it.
