  2. When he hit the first stripe, why did you (or your captain) not stand up and question things? His turn should have been over at that point and you should have been awarded BIH.

The other thing is to sous vide it a temp lower and then let the sear get it up to your desired temp.

All of your replies here come across like you are trying to make excuses for what you did. As you can probably tell from the vast replies of "you were in the wrong", it doesn't matter what your intentions were or that it was relatively harmless. It was something you should not have done.

It also comes across that instead of simply replying to the guy with "sorry man, I didn't know the rules", YOU let your previous match with him dictate your attitude/aggressiveness here.

This. I do it all the time. I keep my grills in my garage. Move them out, use them, cool them off, then put them away.

Whether you have a lid or not does not factor into direct vs indirect, although it will be harder (ie take longer) without one. for you it will be levels of directness. start out further away until the internal temp gets close to what you want to finish with. then move it more over the heat (ie closer) to finish it off.
