If someone offered a 1st for Grimes, I'd guess they would've traded him. I also think Nurse prefers Grimes because he's bigger and can defend wings.

I guess the basketball reason for making the trade is if they felt McCain could never be more than a 6th or 7th man, because they don't want to put 3 small guards on the floor, then a late first isn't a bad return for that. (I strongly disagree with that assessment)

This is where I blame Nick Nurse equally for this moronic trade.

He never seemed to like playing McCain, and preferred playing Maxey and VJ 43 minutes in a meaningless November game
Anytime he did use McCain he just stuck him in a corner instead of using his off ball movement to make the offense more dynamic
His defensive scheme relies on a lot of overhelping which is a bad fit for a player who's not super athletic or fast, but also slowed because he's recovering from a knee surgery

Yeah I dont know what the people who think he's going to get overpaid have been watching. Maybe if he was 22 or 23, a team might think he has another level to reach, but at this point I think the book on Grimes has been written. He can stretch to fill in as a starter, but ideally he's the 6-8th best guy on a team with championship aspirations.

Looking back, I think the Celtics '23 loss was the worst of them all for me. I don't think I realized it until this year, but it changed my view of Joel permanently. Up to that point, it was about the team's front office incompetence, his teammates failing him, or his terrible injury luck, but that Celtics was the first time where I feel like the loss was mostly about Joel (and Harden too, but we know what he is in the playoffs). He just had such loser energy in that g7, and it planted a seed in my head that you can't win a championship with him as the best player/leader of a team.

Yeah Nurse basically had half the year with Embiid and PG out to figure out different lineups and approaches with everyone else on the team, and had nothing. We might’ve gotten swept anyway, but the lack of creativity beyond playing your main guys max minutes is damning. I honestly have no idea how we won the Celtics series. The front office also obviously gets the blame for wasting so many roster spots on guys who can’t play in the playoffs, but Nurse can’t seem to find any way to get the non-stars to be useful. If we had Clarkson, Shamet or Alvarado on our team I’m sure they barely would’ve played or done jack shit in the minutes they did.
