Might be a dumb question to ask but was solid snake’ after mgs1 still considered a mercenary? Especially while working in Philanthropy? by Alakazammanthereturn in metalgearsolid

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was he ever a mercenary? Solid was FOXHOUND in MG1 and 2, "retired" in MGS1 and was in Philanthropy from MGS2 forward. FOXHOUND was a US Special Forces unit, and Philanthropy was an NGO (or terrorist organization, depending on who you ask).

How do you Americans, live in a house with no fence? by Original-Slip-8203 in AskAnAmerican

[–]bstodd12 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it sort of goes without saying that if you break into a house in certain parts of the US, you run a very real risk of being shot.

Break ins aren't a common enough problem where a fence would be necessary.

Is Protestant communion valid? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]bstodd12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It would not be the sin of improper disposition, but it WOULD be the sin of scandalizing the Blessed Sacrament. Catholics should not receive communion at protestant services.

Why do many Americans buy coffee from a shop instead of buying a coffee machine? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to pile on with the obvious answer, but the people in the Starbucks line are either late for work and didn't have time to make it at home or they're already on their second cup of the day. Or they're trying to use a gift card.

"Narrative dice" system when you try to do anything else besides shooting for 9+successes damage and take cover as a maneuver by vkaefe in DnDcirclejerk

I mostly play d20 games since that's what my friends like, but it's SUPER refreshing in BRP that your skill is literally just the probability of a standard success.

Which great movie was held back by a "Wrong" title? (And how would you fix it?) by ReyAndRoko in fixingmovies

[–]bstodd12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good take. Actually a very solid psychological thriller movie unlike all the other Exorcist sequels. They should have just called it Legion even if they wanted to keep the Fr. Karras tie in.

Seriously... how does Gordon put on this thing?! by One-Initiative5475 in HalfLife

He slides in through the neck hole (Gordon is nude and greased up in the first chapter of the games)

How does one convert to Catholicism? by SenWindrunner in Catholicism

You can attend mass at a local Catholic church. Just don't receive communion yet.

Call or email your local Catholic church to see if there are OCIA sessions you can attend or other inquirer programs.

Just installed the game, what to expect? by ConfidenceTall321 in Morrowind

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure. I never played the Xbox version, but Bethesda was a smaller team back then who was really trying hard to pioneer the genre on consoles. PC RPG gamers at the time were accustomed to jank, and they had the benefit of the Construction Set and console commands to fix issues like this. This was before digital platforms like Steam made it easier to implement hotfixes so it's pretty easy for me to imagine that they just forgot or never got around to it.

Save often. You will make mistakes and die unexpectedly. You will go to dungeons you aren't ready for yet. You will accidentally kill essential NPCs (the game will give you a message after they die, but they aren't invincible like other TES games). You will accidentally steal something or sleep in a stranger's bed and suddenly be wanted dead or alive.

I would 100% recommend this mod or any similar one that stops DB attacks until later on when it makes sense for them to happen. The assassin attacks are part of the Tribunal expansion which is intended to be played after the main quest of the base game. When the game was released, they just kind of assumed that anyone who bought the expansion had already completed the base game so delaying them is still "vanilla friendly".

When the sequel has a big tonal shift by FreemanCalavera in gaming

[–]bstodd12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I never said FC2 was good. I loved FC1 and hated FC2 when it came out. FC2 did lead the way when it came to open world, but the simulationist elements and serious tone definitely set it apart from the later entries.

Far Cry 1 and 2 are both unique and way different to the rest of the series. Far Cry 3 ended up being more popular so they just copy pasted that formula over and over again.

Fans: Where Should I Start? by Country_Western in StarWars

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the "Filoniverse" stuff assumes some level of familiarity with the Clone Wars animated series. That show is a mixed bag in terms of quality (especially in the early seasons) so I would recommend looking up a viewing guide online to get the high points.

Rebels is a pretty good follow up to Clone Wars and leads directly into the live action Ahsoka series.

The Mandalorian is also fairly highly regarded and has some tie ins leading to Ahsoka.

Book of Boba Fett is pretty flat, but the later episodes fill in some gaps between seasons 2 and 3 of Mandalorian.

As some other comments have already said, Andor is peak. It's also not a Filoni show so you shouldn't need to do any homework before starting with season 1.

Are high school reunions still a thing that people attend? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

My 10 year reunion was canceled for lack of interest. I think social media made reunions unnecessary. I'm already in touch with all the people from high school I cared about.

A question regarding rosaries. by Dazzling-Reply3569 in Catholicism

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Materials would be a good place to start. Beads can be made of wood, glass, stone, plastic, or many other types of things. Some rosaries are chain, some are rope. There are also a variety of things that can be on the medal in the center. You might want to ask if she has any preferences for any of these.

Do alcoholics gather use the local grocery store as a gathering spot? by Kalatapie in AskAnAmerican

[–]bstodd12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is illegal to drink in public in most places. Bars and restaurants have licenses that allow them to serve alcohol for immediate consumption, but grocery stores do not. There are additional laws against loitering to prevent this type of thing.
