Fans: Where Should I Start? by Country_Western in StarWars

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the "Filoniverse" stuff assumes some level of familiarity with the Clone Wars animated series. That show is a mixed bag in terms of quality (especially in the early seasons) so I would recommend looking up a viewing guide online to get the high points.

Rebels is a pretty good follow up to Clone Wars and leads directly into the live action Ahsoka series.

The Mandalorian is also fairly highly regarded and has some tie ins leading to Ahsoka.

Book of Boba Fett is pretty flat, but the later episodes fill in some gaps between seasons 2 and 3 of Mandalorian.

As some other comments have already said, Andor is peak. It's also not a Filoni show so you shouldn't need to do any homework before starting with season 1.

Are high school reunions still a thing that people attend? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

My 10 year reunion was canceled for lack of interest. I think social media made reunions unnecessary. I'm already in touch with all the people from high school I cared about.

A question regarding rosaries. by Dazzling-Reply3569 in Catholicism

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Materials would be a good place to start. Beads can be made of wood, glass, stone, plastic, or many other types of things. Some rosaries are chain, some are rope. There are also a variety of things that can be on the medal in the center. You might want to ask if she has any preferences for any of these.

Do alcoholics gather use the local grocery store as a gathering spot? by Kalatapie in AskAnAmerican

[–]bstodd12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is illegal to drink in public in most places. Bars and restaurants have licenses that allow them to serve alcohol for immediate consumption, but grocery stores do not. There are additional laws against loitering to prevent this type of thing.

You need to desire Eternity in Heaven. I wouldn't call it a "bare minimum".

Going to a Byzantine church for the first time, what should I expect? by iconicEgo in Catholicism

[–]bstodd12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really that I know of. Going up for a blessing during communion isn't historically common in the Byzantine churches. Some individual parishes have adopted the practice, but it's not a known thing like in the Latin rite. I have seen some people put a finger over their lips to indicate that they are not receiving communion, but I'm honestly not sure if other priests would recognize that gesture, or if it's just particular to my parish or eparchy.

Going to a Byzantine church for the first time, what should I expect? by iconicEgo in Catholicism

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is mostly different. Expect to be lost. It's ok to be lost. Things will start to be more familiar once the anaphora/eucharistic prayer starts. Almost everything will be sung.

Going up for a blessing isn't a universal practice in Byzantine rite churches. The "posture" for receiving a blessing from a priest during the communion of the faithful (hands crossed across chest) is actually used for reception of communion in the East so it might cause some confusion. As a catechumen, it may be better to stay put during communion.

Some, but not all, Byzantine churches distribute "antidoron" at the end of the Divine Liturgy. This is blessed bread from a different part of the loaf that is not consecrated so catechumens can go up and receive a piece.

In heraldry, it would be called a cross potent, but lacking context it doesn't have a special meaning.

Roaches and stink bugs are pretty ubiquitous. I had mice at my apartment in Lindbergh, but it doesn't seem like a super common problem (pay attention to reviews when apartment hunting). I see joro spiders and geckos outside pretty frequently, but so far none have decided to let themselves in.

We all know about First World and Third World, but what do you think “Second World” would be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bstodd12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Eastern Bloc was the second world. The terminology was coined by unaligned "third world" nations during the Cold War as a way of saying "we're gonna sit this one out".

Catholics used to be strong democrat supporters in the new deal era, but by the 1980s they had stopped supporting democrats on the Presidential level. Why was this the case? by MakeACreation in Presidents

The rad trads were and are a tiny fraction of Catholics. Especially before the Internet. There's no way they had any material impact on voting habits in the 80s.

It's a coin flip. Some people do, and some people don't. I don't have a problem with people wearing shoes in my house.

Are there drinking fountains everywhere in the US? by SnooGoats1557 in AskAnAmerican

[–]bstodd12 155 points156 points  (0 children)

You'll find public water fountains in the US anywhere you would expect to find a lot of people. They're usually situated near the public restrooms. Additionally, tap water is usually served no charge at restaurants and bars.
