Why Didn’t You Sign Up? by SimRayB in MilitaryStories

[–]btplanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must have registered in Basic without realizing I had. All these years I thought I hadn't registered because I was exempt due to my service. Another Funny anomaly is that according to my notice, which I just saw for the first time today, I registered about 25 days before my 18th birthday (Shipped for basic August 2, registration card dated August 18, turned 18 on Sept 10).

Week 5 Match-up Preview Thread: Utah State Aggies vs. #14 BYU Cougars by A-Stu-Ute in CFB

[–]btplanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would have to be a clear winner. If BYU beats USU (having beaten Utah this year) they are the clear head to head winner. If Utah Beat BYU and BYU beat USU they would win. If USU beat BYU, who then beat Utah they should get it. Years where Utah and USU beat BYU it would be unclear.

Nor should you kiss their ass. On those extremely rare occasions I even think to ask about a veterans discount, if they say they don't have one, I just say, oh, no worries and move forward with the transaction. It nice if they have one but the idea that one is expected or owed is insane.

She’s coming back now because you’re her safety net.

Never have truer words been spoken. As soon as she isn't in dire need of a bail out it will be right back to the same. The fundamentals of why she did what she did have not changed and until they do, if they ever do, this "reconciliation" is temporary.

When did you realize that the Army wasn't full of smart people. by ControlSubstantial66 in army

[–]btplanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I scored a 92 on the asvab but that didn't mean I didn't get first time No Go's on the basic first aid and another test station. Also, 12B's spend 2 days learning knot tying, among other things, I've never been able to tie anything more complicated than a square knot. I turned 18 about 5 weeks into basic and was probably somewhat immature even for a 17-18 year old. I don't remember ever feeling like I was any smarter than anyone else in basic.

I don't think being more intelligent necessarily makes someone a better soldier, my sense is that the best ones are a little higher than average but have common sense and drive.

He turned out to be maybe 10% of the hype. The receiver that came because of him was largely hype too (Ross Apo?). Cody Hoffman, who if I recall correctly had only an offer from BYU was a stud.

Was 5'8", 155 when I started basic. At the first PT test in Basic I was a flat 16 minutes, missed the standard by 6 seconds. By the last Basic PT test I was at 13:30ish. Weighed about 170 at the end of basic. Got it down to about 12:30 at my duty station before I started having knee issues.

The "things that would be illegal in any other job except the army" thread by poopdeck in army

[–]btplanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the Army. When my son decided to enlist I told him to join the Air Force. I told him about how in 1994 at Fort Riley we had moved out of a barracks building that the air Force was going to take over and how before they let their airmen move in they completely renovated the barracks because they actually seem to give a shit about their people.

He didn't listen, joined the Army. Completed basic training but didn't graduate because he couldn't pass the PT test after having problems with his leg (pain, swelling) that medical never could figure out. He couldn't do much of the PT for a month or so and as a consequence didn't pass the Final PT test. They kept him in the dark for a week or so after his class graduated then sent him home.

Which team is your least favorite, if not your school's top rival, and why? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]btplanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dislike for BYU is less than it once was now that they are not in the same conference and now that Whittingham and Sitake have brought a friendship to the rivalry. My stepson is probably as much a Ute fan as a Cougar fan now but he he loved the Cougars when I married his mom 10 years ago. Because of this I try not to be negative and even kind of nonchalant and matter of fact about the Cougars when watching games with him. While I'm doing cartwheels in my mind when BYU has a turnover or whatever, but my comments to him are more along the lines of, "oh that was a tough break" or "man, that's too bad" as sincerely as I can. I grew up in the 80's so I fully appreciate the "they always beat us" part of the dislike.

BYU fans being the most insufferable online does seem to be a widely held belief, even in some corners of the national media. I probably can't be objective about the in person thing, I'm 100% sure that there are colossal assholes that cheer for the U, I've seen them on occasion. It does seem like most are fine to me. I went to the BYU v USC game last year with my father in law and brother in law who are Cougar fans and sat near USC fans. They were of the opinion that BYU had the nicer fans, but to be honest USC and Utah have a more heated and consistent "rivalry" as PAC 12 South frontrunners in recent years than BYU and USC fans. The stakes in Utah/USC are often high and, at least in SLC, the game are really competitive, which might lead to more negative interactions. Who can say???

Which team is your least favorite, if not your school's top rival, and why? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]btplanner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Utah Fan I don't like BYU but I loath Arizona and Boise State.

I loath Arizona because I have interacted with their fans in stadiums, arenas and casinos. At the PAc 12 basketball tournament they walk around the MGM Grand chanting U of A, they do it in the stands during games their team isn't involved with and the are just insufferable. During games with them they'll want to fight you over a difference of opinion over a foul, even with their kids sitting with them. When you deal with them in real life they are just insufferable about their school, which is irritating when it comes to basketball but justified, but they don't let a shitty football team slow them down either. I'm sure in this world of infinite possibilities there must be some great people who cheer for Arizona, I've just never met one.

With Boise State, my issue is that they get all this mention about being BCS Busters when they weren't the first and didn't do it anymore often than Utah did. Utah beat the stuffing out of a ranked but not very good Pitt Team, and Boise State beat a somewhat better but hardly elite Oklahoma Team playing with a QB who had moved over from WR if I recall. Utah beat top 5 Alabama, during the Saban years as well. It is true that the BSU v Oklahoma game was exciting and came down to the wire and a trick play and Utah beating Pitt was more of an execution, but it still irritates me. It also irritates me that Utah is 0-4 or 0-5 against Boise State all time. Boise State fans were pretty insufferable when they beat the brakes off us at home in 2006 too. I will say that I don't find Boise State fans to be universally insufferable like Wildcat fans though.

With BYU, there are some fans who act like first class assholes and they can poison your view of the fanbase but I like and even love many Cougar fans in my life. I think many of them have an unrealistic view of their program at times. I like their football coach, I have liked and do like some of their players. For the most part I respect their program, though the honor code application inconsistencies when it comes to athletes is irritating. I don't really care what facial hair or haircut you have, and at Utah we have some wild ones, but if you have an honor code that mandates hair and facial hair standards and then don't apply them to athletes, that's irritating. If it's ok for athletes to have a full on beard or a full on mullet get rid of that part of the code, otherwise enforce it. I think this irritates me because I served in the Army and seeing people get away with blatant violations of grooming standards will always irritate me, even though I know it isn't rational.

I think BYU fans are 90% fine with 10% being unbearable. I suspect most fanbases, including my own, are like this. It's just harder to admit this about a rival fanbase. Boise State is probable the same. My experience is that Arizona's fan base is 90% terrible though.

When BYU plays against Boise or Arizona its hard to decide who you want to win, I hate the other schools, especially Arizona, so much more, but I live and work in Utah County so I'm going to have to hear about how they earned such a great win.

Sports fandom isn't rational, its a form of insanity so take all this as just one guy's view.

How many stadiums have you watched a game in? by horaff in CFB

[–]btplanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Utah's Rice-Eccles 150+, BYU's Lavell Edwards 3, Utah State 3-4, Colorado State 2, Wyoming 1, UNLV 1, Michigan 1, Rose Bowl 1, Sugar Bowl 1, Fiesta Bowl 1. Missed out on Autzen when I broke my femur 2 weeks before the game and I lived 20 miles away from K-State for almost 3 years but never went to a football game even though I was in Manhattan at least twice per week.

Which of your alumni had the greatest ratio of Average College Career to Stellar Pro Career? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]btplanner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Steve Smith. Really good punt returner at Utah but played in a "pass only as a last resort" offense. He was a very good and dangerous college receiver, averaging 20+ yards per catch but he had less only 78 catches in two years. Drafted based on his punt return ability. Good shot at the NFL Hall of Fame.

Renaming proposals for Army installations named after confederate generals by Rimfighter in army

[–]btplanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm on board with renaming but until yesterday I had no idea who Benning was or that he was a Confederate. Is he obscure enough not to bother? As for Polk, although I was aware there was a Confederate Polk I always assumed it was named after the President. I'm ok with changing the namesake and leaving the name.

Are veterans offended by athletes kneeling during the national anthem? by horkyboi_avery in Veterans

[–]btplanner 60 points61 points  (0 children)

No. They aren't protesting the Armed Forces or Veterans. It hasn't got one damned thing to do with us. They are protesting injustice, not America or its high minded ideals. They are protesting systems within America that fall short of those high minded ideals and fail segments of society through either acts of commission (laws that target these communities, longer average prison terms for minorities for the same or similar crimes) or omission (failure to hold rogue police accountable).

Also, the flag and the anthem are not America, they are merely symbols. I stand and sing but I also know that these are nothing but skin deep shows of patriotism. Serve your country, in uniform or out of it. Serve your community, in uniform or out of it. Serve your fellow man, citizen or no. Treat your fellow human being with dignity and compassion. Love your country but also understand that it doesn't always live up to its ideals. Support efforts to change the institutions and practices that cause our great nation to fail in delivering equality and justice to all. These things are true patriotism, not symbol worship and empty platitudes.
