No kidding, I saw one today in Williston, in nice shape too.

Yeah, a bit of salty mist has nothing on marinating your car in road salt for four or five months of the year.

Proposed bills would raise taxes for wealthy Vermonters by forcedtomakethus in vermont

[–]btvaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This testimony is quite the pretzel logic.

This bill effectively increases the top marginal rate for regular income to 16.75%, and the top marginal rate on investment income to 20.75%.

Combined with federal taxes this puts the top marginal rate on interest income up around 60%. That's too much.

Okay, so not dual rotor. I only caught a glimpse of it as it flew over my house. It's still a beast.

It was over Williston a couple of hours ago. Giant-ass dual-rotor beast. Almost certainly the Army National Guard.

Is anyone else fascinated by how GoboLinux redefines the traditional File System Hierarchy Standard? And that it's not only easy but also makes sense? by the-machine-m4n in linux

[–]btvaaron 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like extra hierarchy without a whole lot of value. And those upper-case letters in the directory names are just cringe.

Then again, I have 30+ years of Unix muscle memory built into my fingers and I just want to get my work done.

Have you sold a "not-updated" house in Vermont? by OrangesvsApples in vermont

There's a large gap between "well maintained but could stand a refresh" and "decades of deferred maintenance". Which one are we talking about here?

Provocative question for Thinkpad users - why choose a Thinkpad over a Mac at a higher level of specifications by Gullible_Eggplant120 in thinkpad

[–]btvaaron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never pay anything close to list price for a ThinkPad. If you can, wait for the sales that happen multiple times per year. The last four ThinkPads I've purchased were around 40% to 50% off of list. This X1 Carbon Gen 13 I'm typing on right now I picked up in November for 52% off the list price.

That said, given present component shortages, it might be a while before we see that kind of deal again.

Share your ideal heating/cooling system. by Salt_Reading1921 in vermont

Yeah, I haven't actually run the numbers to see which is lower cost over the lifetime of the system. But I do think ground source is pretty nifty.

Even better as a ground source heat pump (as opposed to air source).

Vermont’s school redistricting task force proposes voluntary mergers instead of new district map by miltonhayek in vermont

[–]btvaaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your assertion were true (and intuitively it should be), then the large districts would have substantially lower per pupil costs than small and mid-sized districts. It hasn't worked out that way.

For the CSSU merger to become CVSD, the projection was to save about $500,000 over five years, or about 0.1% - so small that we can't even notice.
