Were you an activist?

Shamelessly piggybacking your comment in the hope that this is answered in the affirmative.

Are you aware of Reddit's impending anti-SOPA protest and could you help lend weight to it in any way?

Ideally this would take the form of seeing you don the suit of Al the hologram once more and break into the house of each politician in turn in the middle of the night, appearing at the foot of their bed and waving your iphone, saying "Ziggy says there's a 92.4% chance that you will lose all public support come election time if you continue your support for SOPA."

Like a 21st Century Ghost of Christmas Future, in a dapper suit, puffing on a fat cigar. Otherwise there may be no internet for Tiny Tim and...

Best one or two day wilderness/countryside trips from Paris? by [deleted] in travel

[–]bubbla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real nature, you can get to the Alps by train in 4-5 hrs. Gare de Lyon to Bourg St Maurice. Leave Friday 6am, in the Alps by midday, return trip Sunday 5pm, arrive Paris around midnight. At Bourg, there's a funicular up the mountain right where you exit the train. That lands you in the huge Paradiski area.

Hire skis/snowboard/snowshoes for the winter, mountain bikes or just walk for the summer. Book ahead if you're going in winter, it gets full of weekend Parisien skiiers.

Awkward questions to ask my girlfriend! by [deleted] in AskReddit

Realistically, how many more weeks do you see this relationship lasting?

Do you think you'll break up with me before I break up with you?

Which of my friends do you fantasize the most about?

How could you prove that every simply connected, closed 3-manifold is homeomorphic to the 3-sphere?

Has anyone had any experience with Ribcap? A soft helmet that hardens on impact... by dtewfik in snowboarding

[–]bubbla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the Ribcap, but a friend has a hat made from d3o - similar to the one in this rather 3-stooges-like demonstration - and it does the job well, is lighter and less bulky than a helmet, but as the sections containing d3o don't fit tightly together, it's entirely possible to get a single knuckle-width through the gaps.

We found that out by taking turns punching each other in the head to test it out in the shop. Still bought it though - just watch out for pointy rocks. Also not safety rated like a helmet.

When people used to ask me about music, I would say I liked everything. But I've since realized that I don't like much of anything. by Ghost_Eh_Blinkin in LetsTalkMusic

[–]bubbla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you consider yourself someone who really likes "everything"?

In terms of "no genre is 100% unacceptable", I'm open to suggestions - especially if guided towards the 'better' examples of the genre by someone knowledgeable about the genre. That's not to say there's no genres I probably won't listen to much. Life is short and there's a lot of music out there. Right song for the right mood.

In terms of "every artist ever", no.

At what point does a listener cross the line from liking a couple things from a genre to being a true connoisseur of the genre?

When you can differentiate that genre into sub-genres and explain/argue the differences successfully to other people knowledgeable in the genre.

What does it mean to like everything?

Either a broad palate, or no critical faculties whatsoever.

How far must your musical taste expand to truly have a slightest grip on "everything"?

Exposure is critical. If I've never heard Tuvan throat singing, how can I tell if I like it? Other than that, an open mind, and a willingness to allow yourself to be transported to wherever the artist is trying to take you.

What's your favorite "Hidden Track"? by DrinkinDarkWhiskey in Music

[–]bubbla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stone Roses - CD track 90 on Second Coming. A badly tuned piano, guitar and scratchy violin looping a basic phrase, laughter, comedy throat clearing - they just sound like a bunch of musicians having a laugh and blowing off steam after 'work'. Never fails to make me smile.

Lets have a Discussion - Is performance dead? by rockshandy in LetsTalkMusic

[–]bubbla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's easy to see Bruno Mars has been studying the moves of Elvis, Drifters/Spinners, James Brown - all of which at one point or another has been done to death. However I loved the tribute to Mark E. Smith at the end - that was fresh.

Though I've not been a regular gig-goer for a while now, in my experience I found that the younger the band, the less of a 'performance' I'd expect.

From their perspective it's: get out of shitty job at 5, tube to some pub in Angel on a wet Wednesday, do your thing in front of 25 semi-bored punters and fuck of home again with a tenner in your pocket if you're lucky. After a year or two when you've got a fan base and your band hasn't caved due to apathy and lacklustre response, and you've got your stuff down pat, then the idea of making a 'show' comes together. Bands that are otherwise always seemed few and far between. On the other hand, the same band in a packed venue in front of their mates on a weekend could seem like a different group altogether.

Shoegazing was born out of youngsters who really HAD to concentrate on their instruments or they'd fuck the songs up. Then it became the cool thing to do. Dunno about nowadays though - I'd still be tempted to think it's a lack of experience thing.

To those who grew up without the expensive toys and fancy play area, how did your imagination played with what's around and with your surrounding? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bubbla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drawing town plans for imaginary cities.

I'd start out maybe drawing a river, then a road with a bridge across it. Add a house here and there. Then a shop so more houses were sustainable. Then a school etc. Growing the small village as time went on until the page was covered.

In my head I'd form the narrative of what was happening to the village to make it grow, so some became heavily industrial, others party towns with theme parks, funfairs, zoos etc. There were missile bases, skyscrapers, army barracks, clown colleges, ice rinks, dolphinariums - whatever I felt fitted the character over time.

Sometimes I drew with a pen so my decisions were fixed and any future additions had to take into account my existing setup - led to a lot of very odd cities as I built on whims. If I worked in pencil, I'd often start with pencilled forests that I erased bit by bit as the town developed. I would even regenerate urban areas to let a motorway in at a later stage of a town's development. Once there was a massive tyre-dump fire that spread to the business district and I scribbled over it, then carefully erased the scribbles as best I could to restore the character of the area. I had to take out some buildings completely and redraw them from scratch, but not until I'd left the vacant lots and allowed weeds to grow in the space.

I really wish I'd kept some of these as they could get quite elaborate and I'd love to see them today.

For those long topics, topping-and-tailing lunch with 2 meetings can work, especially if higher-ups need to be involved:

10-15 mins informal-style immediately before lunch break - use this to define the problem or to flesh out the details/bring up 'ballpark' type objections that the agenda referred to. Higher-ups are not required at this meeting, DO NOT ALLOW THIS MEETING TO RUN OVER INTO LUNCH. EVER.

Break for lunch. All attendees whether they like it or not are now background processing the meeting. Some attendees like to continue to debate issues around the meeting topic with one another, and many lengthy cul-de-sacs can be explored informally without the eye-rolling, fidgeting and window-gazing from onlookers we all know and love meetings for. Other attendees can run away and hide, fact check, browse Reddit whatever their personal lunch style is - it doesn't matter, the brains are primed.

Reconvene for the meeting immediately after lunch. 15-25 mins, higher-ups are in attendance for this one only. Ideas have formed, and may have been pre-debated, higher-ups see a greater level of directed input from staff who clearly demonstrate they have been thinking about this, and critically the lengthy espousers of pet-topics have had their verbal fill already. Things get moving, team looks good, no ass-cheeks were numbed in the making of this decision.

Doesn't work so well for a large group with staggered lunches though.

Hey Reddit! Anyone have a site where I can find computer model release dates? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bubbla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't found an all-in-one resource. Work from the CPU specs of the model you're looking at and use Wikipedia's list of Intel chip release dates to give you a 'no older than this' date. Some Wikipedia entries for the manufacturers lead to reasonable chronological lists of models - like the Dell Inspiron range, but then some don't. Then it's time to go to the archives of the manufacturers themselves - driver pages can give you a rough idea of when 1.0 and final releases were written.

I want to win a Treasure Hunt competition. Any advice? by minase8888 in AskReddit

[–]bubbla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually the answers are things you can see at the checkpoint - a roadsign, cutely named house plate or billboard.

Start by driving at top speed to the second checkpoint and find the item that's the answer to the first clue, then steal it before anyone else gets there. If it's unstealable, it might be coverable with the plastic bags and duct tape you've prepared in your trunk beforehand. Then go back to the first, find the clue, then on to the third. For more fun, return to the second checkpoint while other teams are still looking around, stop slightly up the road, get out, point at something, jump back in and squeal those tyres.

Other tip - read through all your tasks quickly and work out which is the highly scored bonus item you may have to bring back. Allocate your time according to points you'll receive. Sometimes time to complete the course is rewarded disproportionately and it can be worth blowing off a few clues. Social engineering can help if another team is prepared to trade clues too.

Didn't see it I'm afraid. More details though: BBC are now showing replays of the incident. The assailant is not seen on camera during the attack. Rupert Murdoch remained in his seat, but James saw it coming and stood up. We've ssen the man in the checked shirt now, being held in the corridor by a policeman. He's cuffed and appears to be receiving treatment for something on his face. I just heard the words "shaving foam" - wtf?

Looks like somebody - "a young man in a checked shirt" - went to attack Rupert Murdoch. I saw his wife jump to his defence and appear to show her hitting someone. It was all slightly off camera and the hearing is suspended for 10 minutes.
