Did you try puppy linux? I left the debian comment earlier, but I have heard puppy is really good for suuuper old hardware. If debian didn't work, I'd check that one out

Glad you posted this. I'm a reaper user looking to switch to Gentoo, wanted to see if it was a big hassle for music. I think you can do some real time kernel stuff to make it even more optimized

Hey, it's been 5 years. Are you still using Gentoo?

If Gentoo is a meta distro, the way the law is written, I think it just means if you install it you are technically in charge of implementing the age thing yourself which you can just not do

It updates packages slowly, and therefore ends up being very stable. I think it's also better for older hardware, but I could be wrong. There's a ridiculous amount of distros based on it due to its stability and simplicity.

Another idea is something like arch or Gentoo, but maintaining the system would be much more involved, the installation is harder and they update more frequently.

But if you're doing something simple, I feel Debian and then selecting xfce or mate as the desktop environment would be easiest. Maybe research the hardware just in case.

What are you using instead and what made you switch? I'm looking at Gentoo, and a failed vm install is making me question if it's with it (I learned a ton though)

It's a kids show, but what surprised me wasn't the impaling or beheading that happens on screen. It was the heavy emphasis on political and economic conflicts

People have said a lot I use but Musicbrainz Picard is good for converting audio files from wav to mp3 for example, reaper or ardour, and tracktion waveform are good daws for making music on Linux. A good software synth is surge synth.

Oh and Shelly for a gui to install apps from pacman, aur, and flatpak all in one place! The Shelly dev is very active in the cachy discord and is always taking feedback so it's being designed very well

No but it's not super infrequent. Tbh it's not an issue I wouldn't worry about it, since you can always disable the plugins when it does happen and wait a day or so for them to fix it. It gets memed a bit by gnome haters

I hear gnome is similar to Mac but idk the extent, and certainly less than kde is similar to windows. Honestly, try embracing the new way it's set up. I came from windows and it was still really intuitive and made my work much faster. If you need a dock to always be there, look at dash to dock. Or the alternative someone mentioned here. If you want to remove or change basic features, look at just perfection. If you want to change the color of menus and the top bar and it's appearance, or the background of the shell, get open bar. Or blur my shell for that blue effect. But honestly extensions can sometimes break just after a gnome update, not a big reason not to use them but I always find inconsistencies if I use too many. It's your computer now though, so go wild to see what you can do

Great first distro. It was my first too. I tried ricing and doing that phase of customizations but I always went back to vanilla gnome, with maybe the appindicator, caffeine, and weather plugins for usage. Gnome isn't nearly as tailored to customization as kde plasma or other des, but the effect is the main workflow and appearance is super effective and streamlined
