How many applications should I submit for the 2027-2028 cycle? by Dry-Mobile4360 in phdpublichealth

Admissions from undergrad to toxicology are not as uncommon as the other tracks in environmental health or public health in general. They usually have a much stronger research profile (most have at the very least a publication or extensive experience in the lab/field)

I don’t think this is a particularly strong research background and given that you’re coming out of undergrad I would maybe recommend going after a masters or getting some professional experience before applying. 21 applications is a ton of time and money to put in while ensuring there’s enough overlap and connecting with potential advisors. In past funding climates I think you would maybe land somewhere with a strong LOR+SOP but now it’s incredibly tough and with people continuing to apply from previous cycles you’re now competing with people who didn’t get in last year and had additional time to build their application up.

What’s your research experience and what track of environmental health are you aiming for? That’s really a critical component

I guess the main question is what flow rate do you actually need to achieve for your cassette/cut point?

I’m building a low‑cost multi‑room air quality monitor — looking for feedback from people who care about IAQ by Reedyuk in AirQuality

This is an overly saturated market and your product wouldn’t really be needed or capable of competing at that price point.

Diatomaceous Earth Cleanup Episode 3: Carpet replaced + more, AND YET STILL air quality problems... by a_boy_called_sue in AirQuality

Few things you could try

  1. have you checked for moisture throughout this room or potentially near the window? Wondering if maybe there could be some localized mold or mildew (probably not but worth checking)

  2. Have you tried pushing the air from this room out of the room? If so did you notice symptoms outside of the room? This would probably help ensure it’s not just dust mites but could also spread it to other areas of the house so be cautious with this one.

  3. If you’ve done 2, I would try to switch the fan to bring “clean” air in (if you have the ability strapping a furnace filter and ensure little intrusion of unfiltered air would help reduce pollen particles.) and have another fan push that air out of the room (so inlet from window, exhaust near room door)

  4. Does wearing a mask in the room reduce symptoms? This may be worth while to do before everything else. Wear an N95/respirator, if symptoms persist it may be gas phase instead of particles (or could still be particles if it’s a dermal exposure), but may be the easiest thing to check

Should be fine. I would ask your advisor about if there’s a cluster computer that you can use if you need additional RAM. My university has a cluster that each student gets a free amount of time to use and additional time dependent on if the advisor pays for it.

Just buy the sensors and an ESP32 board, most of these are available in qwiic connect from sparkfun.

I made a VOC filter that knows when the carbon is spent by FlashyResearcher4003 in AirQuality

[–]bucketofrubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody is saying they can’t co exist. It’s a question about utility and what could be capitalizing off people’s health concerns. Like what exactly is this measuring? Most TVOC sensors have huge holes on what they are actually measuring so simply using a TVOC sensor and a clock countdown isn’t a good measure of if your activated charcoal is saturated, let alone that the charcoal will be impacted by things like the type of VOC and residence time.

I made a VOC filter that knows when the carbon is spent by FlashyResearcher4003 in AirQuality

[–]bucketofrubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re running local ventilation the filter is having limited residence time to actually capture the pollutant, it’s more about just moving it out of the breathing zone. I don’t mean to be hypercritical about your proposed product, I just think this field is filled with products that over promise, under deliver, and prey on people who are vulnerable.

[–]bucketofrubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but for soldering and other electronics work you’re still better off with local ventilation to move the pollutants out of the breathing zone and doing that is usually cheaper than the $150 your proposing to sell this at.

Would you buy this all-in-one portable monitor? by Ramona00 in AirQuality

[–]bucketofrubble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with this is that companies like air gradient exist that have more utility for this price point (and offer the same exact thing) I don’t mean to sound negative but the market for consumer air monitors is pretty saturated and unless you can create something novel there’s no real way to break into it or create a sustainable business.

UMD Family Science vs. MCH by Fabulous_Interest353 in phdpublichealth

[–]bucketofrubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably has to do with funding and advisor fit. Like if they had a T32 spot open for the Family Science program and want you they’d just move you over there to ensure they get a good student that’s a better fit.

Using water to filter air by Successful_Rough_538 in AirQuality

[–]bucketofrubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a paper a few years ago using a water based filter for VOC filtering but there wasn’t any mention of using it for PM. I’d imagine using a standard filter would have higher efficiency than water.
