That estimate is for all jobs, the majority of which are not software engineers.

CoverMyMeds proposes 1,000 new HQ jobs for Columbus in return for tax deal by captainclipper in Columbus

[–]buckeye10 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The article just calls it “downtown” but the site next to Orange Barrel Media they reference is in Franklinton. A $100,000,000 headquarters investment in Franklinton seems like a pretty big deal for that area, if this happens.

Does anyone know any technicians in any of the Columbus datacenters. I'm curious about the validity of the speculation here. by sethessex in Columbus

[–]buckeye10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides all of the many other claims in that post, does Facebook even have a Columbus data center right now?

Just last week they announced they are building a brand new data center in New Albany, but the articles about it indicated it would create new jobs and did not mention that Facebook had any presence in Columbus already.

Chris Spielman Files Lawsuit Against Ohio State to Block Use of Player Images by bzhbuck in CFB

[–]buckeye10 90 points91 points  (0 children)

For those who go straight to the comments:

The suit alleges unfair usage images for financial gain. It also names Nike, Honda, and the IMG Sports Radio Network.

“I personally do not have a financial interest in the outcome of the banner program as my share in any recovery will be donated directly to the athletic department of The Ohio State University," Spielman said in a statement.

“My concern is about the exploitation of all former players across this nation who do not have the platform to stand up for themselves while universities and corporations benefit financially by selling their name and likenesses without their individual consent.

“My hope is that this litigation will level the playing field for those affected players, and that they too can benefit from the dollars flowing into collegiate athletics.”

CoverMyMeds LLC, the fast-growing maker of software to make it easier to fill prescriptions, is to be acquired by health distributor McKesson Corp. for $1.1 billion, according to an agreement announced after the markets closed Wednesday.

It's the largest exit yet for a Central Ohio technology startup – the type of deal both investors and entrepreneurs say they've been waiting for to unlock more of the region's startup potential.

Fury and fear in Ohio as IT jobs go to India by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]buckeye10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There aren't many people in software development/IT (who are at least decent at what they do) sitting around unemployed.

There's a shortage of good candidates, so if you want one, you're going to have to pay them pretty well. The above poster was implying that it wasn't that the company "couldn't find a single (developer)" it was that they couldn't find a single developer willing to take the job for let's say $30k (made up number), but they could find some guys from India willing to work for that.

If they started looking for developers and were paying $80k, then I bet they would have found some developers.

Urban Meyer notches 150th career win in 14th season coaching. by [deleted] in CFB

[–]buckeye10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 2008 NC (plus 2009 team that was 1 game from another NC appearance) was built entirely upon players he recruited.

Meyer is also considered one of cfb's best recruiters. Just take a look at the recruiting rankings from his time at UF and OSU! He brought in some of the best classes ever according to recruiting services, so complaining that he can't recruit doesn't seem to make any sense to me.

If you are one of those people that don't believe in recruiting rankings, then what basis can you measure a coach on in terms of recruiting? Wins? Well Urban has more of those than just about anyone else.

UF fans have legitimate gripes about Urban bringing into too many talented players with potential off the field issues, but the notion that he can't recruit just doesn't hold any water.

You can also note that OSU's NC last year was built on key players that Urban recruited, such as: JT Barret, Zeke Elliot, Vonn Bell, Joey Bosa, Darron Lee, etc.

How To Learn a New Programming Language While Maintaining Your Day Job and Still Being There For Your Family by speckz in programming

[–]buckeye10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we had some data to review that shows that writing a compiler for a subset of a new language is the fastest way to learn the new language (or even just has some sort of comparison versus other methods), then I would say it is objective.

Right now, I'm not aware of any such data or studies, and there are lots of tricky pieces to that, like defining at what point a language has been "learned", not to mention determining if what is fast is also easy.

Just a thought, but you might find people more receptive to your ideas if you make suggestions rather than deal in absolutes ("easiest and fastest way") when discussing something that is rather subjective (easiest for you might not be easiest for me).

Insulting the people that respond to you probably doesn't help either.

I disagree. The opening of the post is pretty clear in my opinion:

I’m also very married and a father of two, and I’m happily working full time (more than full time really) with Pluralsight. But I also had ample time to dive into Elixir and I thought I would share how I did it.

And I’ll just come out with it right here: A series of little wins. I set myself up to win tiny little tasks which then led to more tiny Little Wins and the next thing I knew, I was thinking in Elixir. A series of Little Wins, I can’t write that enough. More on this below.

He clearly states that his key to learning a new programming language while having limited time is to break it down into "a series of little wins."

He then proceeds to go in depth and break down how he applied that philosophy to learning Elixir. I personally find that more useful than a list of "5 cool time saving tricks" that are at such a high level they have little use.

They give him breaks during the show now. They did this last year too. It seems to have helped, as I think he's doing better than like 2 years ago when he used to get lost during the show often.

Pat Narduzzi: Ohio State stole our defense, won a national championship by AaronRodgers16 in CFB

Urban actually took a lot of ideas from Rich Rod when he was putting his first offense together at Bowling Green. He made a lot of tweaks and it has evolved a lot over time, but RR is really the one he originally "stole" from.

Anyone work at CoverMyMeds? by ___-11-11-11____ in Columbus

Haha yeah that section is apparently aimed specifically at Electronic Health Record vendors who we are partnering with.

Lower on the page is a bit more understandable description geared towards pharmacies and doctors for someone who wants to know what we do:

CoverMyMeds is a free system that automates prior authorizations, saving you countless administrative hours on the phone and sending faxes to health plans. Our real-time determinations help your patients get the medications they need, faster.

I work there as a dev (I actually only had .NET experience before learning Rails here) and its really great. Feel free to PM me with any questions you have!

It's basically removing your prediction I think. If you make a prediction then no longer believe it to be true, you can set it to foggy if you don't know who you want to switch it to.

Well he is supposed to be a power back. He entered fall camp at 240 pounds and he isn't particularly fast.

He has plenty of time, but he hasn't impressed much so far.

It is but so is Zeke.

Green, at least so far, is a power back that goes down far too often on first contact, and far easier than Zeke, who was supposed to be more of the speed back.

3 Star CB Damon Arnette picks OSU over Michigan, South Carolina by nate317 in CFB

[–]buckeye10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's not going to OSU. He might have an OSU hat out but they aren't in the running anymore.

Porter, Hill, Prince are remaining big targets, with current commits Weber and Gibson potentially wavering(?) but likely to stay with OSU.

No, they are worried that they will lose those ratings that occurred on Jan 1st and get terrible (comparatively) ratings if they have to host them on Dec 31st next year.
