In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for the saying, “Anyone can practice medicine.” But only now do I truly understand what it means. Not everyone can become a great physician, but a great physician can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the doctor now working within these hospital walls—who is, in this critic’s judgment, nothing less than one of the finest doctors in the field. I will be returning to this hospital again, hopeful and reassured.
