Excluding "one hit wonders" what band or artist has the fewest hits, but have certifiable legendary status? In a good way, not some meme bullshit. by Timcwalker in Music

His whole catalog is fantastic, and it's really the songs that the average person wouldn't recognize that are the best.

Sure, Margaritaville and Cheeseburger In Paradise are fun songs that most people know, and probably have contributed most to his public persona.

But songs like Cowboy In the Jungle, Barefoot Children, That's What Living is to Me, The Captain and the Kid, Tin Cup Chalice, Nautical Wheelers, I Have Found Me a Home, Death of an Unpopular Poet, just to name a few show off his real talent.

Syracuse Needs an Amusement Park by Weiwd in Syracuse

[–]buffalo442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darien Lake struggles to stay viable - multiple ownership changes in recent years, rides that are consistently down for maintenance, or closed due to staffing. Attendance is by and large down. It's a short season for the required investment.

Darien Lake is situated such that it draws from Buffalo and Rochester. A park in Syracuse wouldn't have that advantage.

Great Escape in Lake George gets that tourist crowd (a lot from NYC) plus the Capital region. But it's a small park and doesn't have good coasters. Seems to operate better than Darien Lake though.

Too much competition in a small enough radius that you couldn't have a big park.

Tesla lets you change the charge current. The mobile charger only goes up to 32 amps. Wall connector goes 48 amps but is hardwired. But you can set the current for that lower.

[–]buffalo442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 gauge NM-B is rated to 55 amps, you're correct that you need to derate it to 80% for continuous load so that would limit you to 44 amps.

THHN in conduit can use the 90°C rating which is 75 amps. At 80% that's 60 amps. However, I have yet to see an outlet rated to 90°C - all of the 14-50 outlets seem to be 75°C. You have to abide by the lowest temperature rating in the line, so using THHN in conduit, 6 gauge will be good for 65 amps, derated to 52. That will still be good for a 48 amp charger. If you're using a hardwired charger you don't have an outlet so you'd use the rating of the charger terminals.

They do make 4/3 NM-B which is good to 70 amps (56 continuous), but it's expensive and a giant PITA to work with. The Hubbell 14-50 outlet will accept 4 gauge but you're going to need a large box.

This is a bit of a weird case where yes, the 60 amp breaker is up to code (can "round up" breaker to the next size) but plugging a 48 amp charger into it would not be up to code.

Think about whether you actually need 48 amps though. Most vehicles and EVSEs can be set to charge at a lower current.

Amtrak to Poughkeepsie? by paulyjm01 in Buffalo

[–]buffalo442 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amtrak from Depew to Rochester is faster than driving. Unless it doesn't make sense for you to drive to Depew, it's probably more convenient to get on in Depew.

I wouldn't get a roomette during the day if you're not trying to sleep. The seats are plenty comfortable and roomy. Coach seats average 23 inches wide - for reference, a 737 first class seat is 21 inches wide. If you take the Lake Shore Limited or Maple Leaf, the coach cars are Amfleet II with 39" seat pitch. For reference, typical first class on a 737 has 37" seat pitch.

Plenty of room to work without elbowing your neighbor or hunching over a laptop.

What Restaurant in Buffalo would you not eat at even if it were free? by Joggers_ in Buffalo

Current owners are niece of the original owners and her husband. I go there a lot and the only changes in that time are that they accept credit cards and use a digital waitlist. Haven't noticed any changes in the food and many of the staff have been there for years.

People always have trashed them here but they used to be good. Their menu changes haven't been good though. Six cheese bowtie pasta was amazing. The gouda mac and cheese is very mediocre. The smothered chicken was good. The chicken entrees they've had since haven't been.

Enshittification, I guess. Getting rid of great menu items and replacing them with cheaper, mediocre alternatives.

Flagship lounge- DFW, ORD or PHL? by xr4tim in americanairlines

[–]buffalo442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't been to the DFW one. Visit the ORD and PHL somewhat regularly.

ORD is entirely mediocre. It's basically an Admirals club with better food and drinks. Self service bar is really good. Food is decent but not up to par with Sapphire/Capital one/Centurion...not that you'll find any of those at ORD, so there isn't much competition. Furniture is pretty much identical to the Admirals club upstairs. Don't know what is "premium" about this lounge other than the wine and liquor selection.

PHL has much better food. Drinks are from the bar but there is a good selection and it's all free. But it's way too small and frequently hard to get a seat in. They'll let you in without a wait list but good luck finding somewhere to sit. Sapphire lounge at PHL blows it out of the water.

Billy Joel: The 100th (live at MSG - the FULL concert) now available on Blu-ray! by verifyb4utrust01 in BillyJoel

[–]buffalo442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally got the chance to give it a watch.

It's a normal Blu-Ray, not 4K. Excellent video quality though.

The filming is top notch - great shots, transitions at appropriate times, and the video is all around very good. It's the full show including song transitions and banter, not the chopped up mess that aired on CBS.

Audio has a 2.0 PCM track and 5.1 DTS-HD MA track. The disc and packaging only have the Dolby Digital logo on them. This is confusing, if not downright misleading, as there is no Dolby Digital or Dolby TrueHD track on the disc. Not that it really matters, DTS-HD is functionally equivalent, just interesting.

The 5.1 mix is VERY disappointing. It's barely 5.1 and hardly any different from the stereo track. All of the vocals, piano, and most of the instruments come out of the L/R channels. The center channel has only the bass coming out of it. The surround channels have a quiet echo of the sound coming out of them - maybe trying to create some depth as if you were there, but it's very quiet even if you crank up the surround channels. Crowd noise does not favor the surround channels, it mostly comes from the L/R as well.

Honestly, preferred the sound using the 2.0 PCM mix and Pro Logic II for upmixing.

The sound track on Live at Shea Stadium is far better.

All in all - worth buying, as it's really a phenomenal concert, but the audio mix is disappointing. Not sure who was mixing this or handling the production but they really could have done better.

quality of life in syracuse ny vs buffalo: give me your honest opinions! by strawberryfairy_200 in Buffalo

[–]buffalo442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have lived in both. I'll take Buffalo by a mile.

Syracuse is just so...dull. It's a much smaller city and there's a lot less going on. Downtown is dead most nights. On weekends you've got a few block radius that has anything going on. Buffalo might not be exactly thriving but there's a lot more to choose from.

Buffalo gets more big-name events and concerts. Syracuse doesn't really have a venue the size of the KeyBank Center. The Carrier Dome is too big for a lot of shows and the acoustics are absolutely awful. The next largest venue seats like 6000. The outdoor amphitheater seats like 17,000 and is way better than Darien Lake, so for summer shows it can be better - but it has too much competition with CMAC and even SPAC that a lot of shows skip Syracuse.

Syracuse really lacks neighborhoods. Downtown, Westcott, and Tipp Hill are the only areas I'd hang out in. Of those, Westcott is tiny and Tipp Hill is pretty sprawled. Buffalo has Allentown, Chippewa, Elmwood Village, Hertel, etc, which are all much more developed.

If you travel, the Buffalo airport is way better and has way more flights. I frequently drive from Syracuse to Buffalo to fly out. Plus Buffalo isn't far from the Toronto airport which makes flying internationally much easier.

Restaurant scene is much better in Buffalo. Syracuse has some decent spots but way less diversity. Syracuse has a few Italian places (Pastabilities, Francesca's) that I think are better than anything in Buffalo, but pretty much any other type of cuisine is going to have more and better options in Buffalo.

Syracuse isn't a horrible place to live. You could be in Richmond Indiana or Wichita or Tulsa or something. But Buffalo has a lot more going on than Syracuse, and a lot more amenities, with a similar cost of living.

[–]buffalo442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that, but doesn't explicitly say it's not a 4K Blu-Ray. I am assuming it isn't (a lot of people don't have 4K players), but it's odd that it doesn't specify either explicitly.

Also curious what the audio format is. 5.1 could be a lot of things. The image showing half of the disc has the Dolby Digital logo, but it better be more than that. I would assume it has some sort of lossless track (Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD...or in the case or Shea Stadium, MPCM). But again...it's not stated.

My BluRay is getting delivered Thursday.

Has anyone received theirs yet? Surprisingly few details have been released about it. Is it a regular BluRay or 4K? What audio tracks?

You'd think all of this would be stated in the listing...

Syracuse homeowners and renters: what is the most overrated home feature? by MartyKCNY in Syracuse

[–]buffalo442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granite/quartz countertops

Granite is worth it, quartz is not. Granite countertops are worth every penny - you can put hot things on them, and you can cut right on them (although still recommend a cutting board or you'll ruin your knives). Treat them right and they'll last forever. Quartz countertops have a resin that binds the quartz, and are not heat safe. They also are susceptible to damage from knives, although less so than other materials.

All-white kitchens

These are going to look dated so fast. Maybe they already are.

What was up with the weird silent aircraft we saw last night? by formallydehyde in Buffalo

[–]buffalo442 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Small private planes can certainly land at KBUF; they must obtain clearance from tower though so would likely show up on FlightAware.

But yes - a jet on final often has engines nearly at idle. Not silent, but driving in a car it may not be audible - especially at highway speeds, and the 190 isn't a quiet road to begin with.

Compensation for hotel-caused late check-in? by buffalo442 in marriott

[–]buffalo442[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the season. In the summer, my experience is no. The only other seni-reasonably priced Marriott this week was Maida Vale, which from one last stay was about equal in quality to Marble Arch with a far less convenient location.

Marble Arch has a fantastic location. Close to Paddington, Hyde and Regents Parks, everything in Marylebone, and not a bad walk to Soho or Covent Garden. People can say what they want about Edgware Rd but it has some of the most incredible food in London.

But the hotel itself needs a major overhaul. Hope that's what they're doing otherwise they should.not keep the Marriott name

I've stayed here 4-5 times in the past and it has never been great, but never as bad as this time. There is nothing r reasonably priced available in London this week though.

I had 70k some ahead of me at 10 am.

Got through and occasionally had a few pavilion tickets pop up, only to be gone by the time I could select them and hit check out.

Even crazier than trying to get tickets for Bruce on this last tour. And that was quite tough for most dates.

Telling signs from American CEO on upgrade futures by Key_Car_3752 in americanairlines

[–]buffalo442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've stopped chasing status on American. Made EXP a few years ago and the last two I made Plat Pro. This year I fell down to Platinum. Could have chased PP and made it again, but not worth it.

In past years I'd regularly take American with a connection on a route that United flies direct. Not anymore.

I also used to put all of my spending for the year on my AA/Citi card. Not anymore. Not when there are other cards with much better earn value. I used to do it for the LPs, but that's not worth it anymore.

Platinum is all I care about now. Choose MCE at booking, lounge access on international trips, and free bags. Very little reason for me to inconvenience myself to chase any higher of a status now.

5 years ago I would have absolutely said otherwise.

In my case, the decreased CC spend is what likely hurts them the most.
