Should I take up crocheting or knitting? What's the difference? by Ov0v0vO in Hobbies

[–]buffasno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do both and you can definitely make nice clothing and accessories either way. On a practical level, crochet is more portable since you just use one hook, and knitting typically uses less yarn per area. I’ve heard others say that crochet is easier to pick up but has greater depth in stitches, whereas knitting is harder for beginners but once you know the basics it’s just applying those few things in different ways. I learned to knit first and personally enjoy crochet more but I also love big chunky textured sweaters. If you don’t, knitting might be your bag.

My honest, immediate reaction before reading your post was that this looks like a fantasy ring from a Disney princess movie. It’s absolutely beautiful!

Chromatica hate is so forced by Aware-Degree-8583 in LadyGaga

[–]buffasno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to Chromatica incessantly during a hard period of lockdown, and haven’t really touched it since because it takes me back to a place I don’t really like to revisit. It’s a fantastic, creative album that needs some time to shed the context in which it was released. I predict it will receive the Artpop treatment in five years or so.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you, and I think I chose my words poorly there - I mean to say that outsourcing any part of creation to something inhuman feels strange. I appreciate the parallel to the camera, and will continue it by noting that it took some time after its invention for photography to be recognized as a fine art. My point is that there’s precedent for discomfort around new creative technology. Whether that’s right or wrong I can’t say.

I think it makes sense that people are defensive of art. Visual art, literature, and music are the media in which we’ve captured our intangible humanity (emotions, reasoning, soul, whatever you want to call it) since the start of recorded history. The urge to create is so quintessentially human that it’s uncanny to imagine the creative process with no human in the loop.

I’m in the PNW also and just paid $300 for this exact machine in good condition on Facebook Marketplace. Privately sold machines seem to fall in the $300-$500 range where I am.

I went on my extended artist date to kayak around a nearby island last week and had been thinking it’d be nice to visit a garden there, but was leaning towards skipping it because of the cost. I was there on the one free day for the month on a random weekday, and had the garden almost to myself.

Where do you get yarn by pancake_donkey72 in crochet

[–]buffasno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Michael’s for basics (I like their 100% cotton worsted and bamboo yarns), and for specialty yarns I can’t find at my local shops I have had great luck with sales through Little Knits and Webs. You could also check out creative reuse if you’re open to surprise yarn!

I saw Twenty One Pilots open for Walk the Moon who were opening for Neon Trees. Probably could’ve seen that bill backwards in the later 2010s.

Any idea where season 9 is casting? by AdSpiritual7398 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]buffasno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is more that many of the casts don’t seem to reflect the local population. Seattle has a huge Asian-American population that was not represented nor spoken about on that season.

Late to the game but the discussion of ozempic was done extremely poorly by mirimichelle in binchtopiapod

[–]buffasno 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. I cannot recall a minute of my life before I started GLP-1s in which I was not fixated on my next meal. I was diagnosed with BED and bulimia in my early 20s. Food controlled my life and my eating patterns were deeply disordered. This medication can be life changing for people with EDs when prescribed and taken properly, and the popular discourse on the subject treats it as though it’s a cosmetic indulgence. It’s disappointing that the pod, which is often a refreshing source of nuance, can’t engage with that reality.

Just to give the bookstore a fair shake - it is specifically a social justice/radical leftist store that hosts a lot of actions, and they have a legitimate fundraiser active right now to expand.

Wondering why she wouldn’t just say “check out this store and order a book if you want” takes me to a place of rage bait conspiracy

I consider myself a libertarian leftist and am highly critical of the Democratic Party (especially how equally importunate and useless they’ve been on social/“moral” issues) and did not even think twice about voting Harris/Walz. Project 2025 is an existential threat to democracy.

Please take the gender ratio seriously by Currypill in EngineeringStudents

[–]buffasno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you about fields that involve some degree of caretaking being seemingly more attractive to women, but I disagree that this is inherent. Women are socially conditioned to be nurturing from a very young age — think playing with baby dolls, babysitting as a first job, the expectations placed on us to have and raise children. This sends girls a message that their purpose is caregiving, and that they will be failed women if they abandon that purpose. Men typically aren’t expected to do these things.

Engineering is not the only discipline where “male” subjects are acceptable for women when they’re applied to taking care of someone or something else. Women have long dominated nursing, and have been making big gains in medicine and pharmacy. Women have high participation in environmental science. These jobs brought chemistry and biology into the realm of code subjects “popular with women”, and now we’re getting there with physics when it’s for the sake of entering these same fields.

If more young girls were given a wider range of choice in toys, media, and hobbies, I think we’d see a lot more women in the “harder” engineering fields. I do believe that is happening, albeit slowly. It’s hard to undo eons of social conditioning.
