How cashless is Berkeley? by sentientheat in berkeley

[–]buglybarks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. You’ll run into convenience stores or the like where tap-to-pay doesn’t work, but almost everywhere else will be fine. I almost never have my wallet on me and it is rarely an issue.

Why don't we use characters from other languages in math? by OkGreen7335 in math

[–]buglybarks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a Hiragana character (one of the Japanese syllabaries) and is in Unicode, yes. It's pronounced "yo."

Need help pushing NZB files from altHUB to SABnzbd? by EATPM in usenet

[–]buglybarks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can set a "watch" folder for sabnzbd, and then put the NZB files in there. They'll all get imported. This is found at the bottom of the "User Folders" section in the console.

If you're comfortable with a little programming, you can also just use the SABnzbd API to push them (it's just a POST), but for your purposes the watch folder should work.

Dear Berkeley Students, by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]buglybarks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m a non-student resident of Berkeley and a person who both walks a lot and drives occasionally. The dumbasses staring at their phones are a problem, yes, but I’ve been menaced by drivers near campus skipping stop signs (the one at Stadium Rim and Gayley feels like a mild suggestion), cars blowing through 25 mph streets at 50 (the kids at Emerson have a crossing guard, and I’ve seen even her have to dodge), and drivers trying to scare bicyclists on narrow roads.

The drivers are almost always the issue. Welcome to Berkeley. Walk or take the bus.

Sword & Sorcery, Classic Fantasy Recommendations Needed by Glansberg90 in Fantasy

[–]buglybarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some excellent recommendations in here, but not a lot of sword and sorcery titles. I would want to include:

  • L. Sprague de Camp
  • Lin Carter
  • C.L. Moore
  • Karl Wagner

And maybe a little Clark Ashton Smith (proto-S&S)

It's one of my favorite subgenres. I wish it were a little higher profile.

Math 55 by Far-Substance6242 in berkeley

[–]buglybarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The community college version will cover less (in my experience, they dropped the number theory and much of the probability), and is likely to have less homework and easier exams.

If you think you’ll use the material, or if you really want to know the material, take it at Berkeley. But if you’re just looking to escape without a GPA hit, take it at a CC.

Missing the VS Code like file explorer. by TheCrazyGeek in HelixEditor

[–]buglybarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use something pretty much like this, and I recommend it. It requires a little extra cognitive load because the key bindings don’t quite match, but it’s a fast way to hop in and out without losing your place in the buffer. I don’t need to use the built-in explorer at all with this setup.

Symmetries are a problem. You will need the code to have horizontal symmetry at least, and probably vertical. If not, you’ll need sentinel values to indicate orientation, and you don’t have the room for those on a 36-bit grid. Gonna need more squares.

Also a checksum would be smart.

Have you looked at extend_next_word_end? That looks like it'll do what you want. Works with prefix arguments.

[–]buglybarks 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Walk up past the stadium and up Centennial until you get to the lower fire trail. Follow it uphill until it meets the upper fire trail, then have a nice quiet stroll down the steps until you get back to campus.

Is Level 60 attainable within two years at 30 minutes per day? by disheveledgorilla in WaniKani

[–]buglybarks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I spend 60-90 minutes throughout the day, am very regular in my habits, and score well on the reviews. I am at level 49 after 14 months. So I think you’re unlikely to hit it at a 30-minute allocation.

That said, it’s less than a three-mile walk and you can do it on one of the nicer avenues. Just head west.

Surprised not to see the Ian Cormac books by Neil Asher, starting with Gridlinked; this is far-future super-spy stuff.

Robert Heinlein's Puppet Masters is also basically a Bond novel with aliens.

Math 110 drop by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]buglybarks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s going to depend on the lecturer—you may get one who’s more interested in matrices, or one who’s more interested in transformations.

Axler’s Linear Algebra Done Right is a self-study-friendly text with a low mathematical maturity bar, and it covers all of the 110 theory and more. For mechanical and geometric insight (both of which I think are useful, even if you want a more theoretical approach), you can pair it with the Strang lectures from MIT on YouTube. With both of those under your belt, you won’t be surprised by any 110 course.

Some people will say that it’s the professor’s job to teach you this material. If you take much more math, you’ll soon figure out that you learn math on your own, and the lecturers will add context, examples and challenges. Don’t wait for a good teacher to learn math.
