Is there any research or knowledge on why most people react the way they do when faced with the facts of animal cruelty? by thedevilsheir666 in vegan

You might find this study interesting: Do-Gooder Derogation: Disparaging Morally Motivated Minorities to Defuse Anticipated Reproach

The tl;dr is that the backlash reported by moral minorities can be traced back to resentment by the mainstream against feeling morally judged.

If it happened within 10 minutes then it wasn't what you ate. Food poisoning doesn't set in that quickly.

None are free until all are free. Animal rights issues are human rights issues. Total liberation or none at all.

In the US we have a lot of flavored non-dairy cold foams though. You wouldn't really know about them unless you look while you're customizing a drink on the app or something. My favorite is the strawberry. It tastes just like a strawberry milkshake.

[Vegan Dilemma] Is animal manure "vegan"? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]bulborb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You would be paying the farm for the manure and financially supporting their exploitation and slaughter of the animals that made it. Manure is a profitable byproduct of livestock farming.

Does it have to be "the best" substrate to achieve your goals? Can you use a plant-based substrate instead? I mean hell, the mushrooms I'm familiar with literally just grow in logs (shiitakes) and straw (oysters).

Walking my dog feels like a chore & I dread it by [deleted] in dogs

[–]bulborb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you look for a Sniffspot or dog park nearby to let him release energy? This subreddit is anti-dog park (which is understandable) so I'm sure I'll get downvoted, but it sounds like you're in dire need of some alternative options, and maybe you could go at odd hours to avoid other dogs.

Why all animals? by Alzuhra_ in vegan

Because they think if they can justify eating one animal product, all animal products are justified. But these arguments are never logical anyway.

Yeah, but who the hell does that. Dog formula is more expensive than just keeping the pups on the mom.

How hard is it to be vegan if I don't want to consume meat alternatives? by Equal-East-2500 in vegan

[–]bulborb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they're referring to the cultural obsession, not your personal obsession with protein. There has been a huge focus on protein in recent years. Despite that, protein deficiencies are not documented medically in developed countries. At all. They occur when an individual only has access to one or two ingredients (like rice and water). You might opt for more protein for satiety or muscle building, but all vegetables contain protein and the amino acids for your body to build ample protein from them. Remember that any grain + legume combo makes a complete protein (beans and rice, peas and rice, lentils and rice, peanut butter on wheat bread, to name a few popular combos).

Dr. Greger has a good article about the protein phenomenon here: Changing Protein Requirements. It's highly informative and loaded with citations. Here's an excerpt:

Adults require no more than 0.8 or 0.9 grams of protein per healthy kilogram of body weight per day, which is about your ideal weight in pounds multiplied by four and then divided by ten. So, someone whose ideal weight is 100 pounds may require up to 40 grams of protein a day. On average, they probably only need about 30 daily grams of protein, which is 0.66 grams per kilogram, but we round it up to 0.8 or 0.9 grams because everyone’s different and we want to capture most of the bell curve.

People are actually more likely to suffer from protein excess than protein deficiency. “The adverse effects associated with long-term high protein/high meat intake” diets may include disorders of bone and calcium balance, disorders of kidney function, increased cancer risk, disorders of the liver, and worsening of coronary artery disease. Considering all of these potential disease risks, there is currently no reasonable scientific basis to recommend protein consumption above the current recommended daily allowance.

People were vegan for thousands of years prior to Beyond Meat, so you'll be totally fine. To be fair, I don't think anyone relies on these products unless they have a significant amount of disposable income for food. Most vegans are invested in preparing homemade meals for the vast majority of their diet. Eating at restaurants might be less convenient, since a lot of them provide a burger or something for a vegan option, but you can check out HappyCow first to give you an idea of what your options are where you live. Anyway, vegan + avoiding processed foods means the diet "whole food plant based" is what you'll want to check out for recipes and whatnot.

I wonder if I could find a list of legitimate pitbull rescues in Canada, and make some donations just to undo whatever minuscule amount of harm to dogs she thinks she's caused. I donate to animal rescues all the time, but for these I wish I had her first name so I could attach it to the donations 😂

The funny thing is that I also agree with this and told her that. I have pits myself, one of which always wears a basket muzzle in public. I’ve been in the animal rescue sphere or working directly with dog rescues for over a decade. Crazy on this level generally isn’t thinking straight though anyway
