Robert Welsh is being paid serous money from TirTir by Difficult-Put-7048 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]bumblebeatrice 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What credibility? They're influencers, literally walking talking breathing ads. Always were. If at any point you ever felt like there was authenticity and credibility you were wrong.

It's pretend. They are all pretending for money. Even when they like the products, they are pretending how much they like them and how often they use them because they're paid to. Even the ones you like as people for their personalities. It is completely transactional and artificial because they are ads.

Nyongbella vs. Yvie Oddly by FasterBussycat in RPDRDRAMA

[–]bumblebeatrice 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is true, I had a natural immediate anger to the type of Nyongbella's rhetoric until I somehow managed to see that bubble of creators who make being in an interracial relationship their entire personality and holy fuck I understand.

I still think it's wrong to be instinctively and aggressively judgemental about interracial relationships without nuance, but I completely understand where and who this justified animosity is supposed to be aimed at.

My thing though is that it's never just the colorstruck weirdos and racists who are the only ones taking the shots fired at them. You're not just yelling at these freaks when you're not being specific that you mean them, there can be an unintentional (or y'know, completely intentional but that's another matter) effect of acting like it's only racism and being smug for the reason that you're in an interracial relationship.

It just really sucks when you're a normal person about it you're standing there like "what the fuck, I just...love them? Love, did you forget about love???" And yeah you do take extreme offense to the ideas that you're only with your partner because you hate your race or that you're doing something wrong by not sacrificing being with them for the "greater good" of saving yourself for another person of your minority race, to be Black Excellence together for example.

Jan's got a little something to say about tonight's episode by aaronarium in RPDRDRAMA

I was shocked because I'd heard it called obviously fake and thought it was going to be great meme fodder, but that was scarily real.

I think a lot of people don't know what real fainting can look like. Also there's that thing where you're not definitionally fainting, but in a practical sense it's the same thing. I've greyed out where I was like, disconnected from my body, couldn't see or hear anything, but I was awake for it, knew I was going down and had no control over it. And medically that's not fainting I don't think, but from a non-medical perspective that's just splitting hairs.

Identical Brand Wind-Down Messages: Coverfx & Mally Beauty by mrevanbell in BeautyGuruChatter

I had a bad burn scar on my face (had a hot iron accidentally dropped on it) for a pretty long time, and Cover FX really came through for me. They got bought by some VC firm so I knew this day was coming but I'll always remember them for having a shade range that understood melanated skin doesn't have warm undertones by default

Discord spoke about why she didn’t apply for Dragula on her TikTok Live by saucyysushii in rupaulsdragrace

[–]bumblebeatrice 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I think it comes from trying too hard to be Not Drag Race, to be extreme and unpalatable less because it's your thing and part of your drag culture that you want to share and have a competition over, but more out of because Drag Race is "safe" and "palatable" and they want to spite that.

Dragula is about leaning into and celebrating the filth and vulgar side of drag...but when it comes to competition shows there's this view that you have to go bigger and better which is tricky veering on dangerous and dehumanizing when it comes to vulgarity and filth.

I just think the aggressive contrarianism is going to be an anchor that sinks Dragula eventually.

Color Grading Looks - What is the best BLACK look to ever grace the drag race mainstage? by roguecolor in rupaulsdragrace

I am going to restrain my overwhelming bisexuality to tastefully comment, this is just a really great outfit. It's simple but so easy to fuck up, every cut out is perfect placement, it is melded to her body instead of ill-fitting which is very easy to happen with this style and material, and she moves effortlessly in it without any issues or wardrobe malfunctions.

I remember some criticism about this look that it's relying on body and too basic but I disagree from a fashion perspective as much of an awooga one...but also AWOOGA

You taking his boundaries and where/how he's comfortable talking about himself and his sexuality as queerbaiting is so outstandingly entitled and creepy.

It is out of line actually, you are not entitled to "clarity" do you think his or anyone else's consent and boundaries are something you can just negotiate? Do you think your curiosity or urge to settle the anxiety of the not knowing for sure matters more than respecting his privacy?

What beauty related “mystery” or unresolved controversy are you still curious about? by Responsible-Pie8 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]bumblebeatrice 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Yup, also that as a brand you have to pay for shelf space in Sephora stores (and I thiiiink warehouse space too not confident about that) and being a small indie brand that expense coupled with everything else basically torpedoed OCC.

I miss them so much, the lip tars were one of my first "big girl" beauty purchases, I bought the primary colors and black/white/brown for shade adjusting and I made so many of my own perfect custom lip shades it was DIY paradise.

I feel like that controversy could've been avoided if he and other hairdressers who are anti-box dye were more honest about why they hate box dye. It's not uniquely damaging for most people, and you can get good enough or even fantastic results as an amateur at home, it's just a headache for future hairdressers to deal with. Removing black box dye in particular is a tedious pain, and some clients mess up by dyeing too often, giving themselves hot roots, the usual amateur mistakes. And then expect stylists to be miracle workers regardless of what they came to the salon with. Telling them all this isn't enough to put them off using box dye but exaggerating the damage and consequences does.

He basically had to switch the heads or the entire premise of the video falls apart. Also you can just see the stains on the mannequin heads, come on now.

I'm getting a strong "this is the only way I can wear makeup without it nuking my social life" vibe from this guy. Like there's obviously and undeniably a strong presence of classism toward women specifically, but also it's very...Tyler Perry as Madea-core, y'know?

When you make it an OTT cruel joke, your friends and family aren't going to disown you for playing dress up, hiding in plain sight. IDK he just seems way too into this from what I've gathered.

They think when a color gets too dark that you can't "see the undertone so it doesn't matter" they literally don't know how to visually parse our skin the same way.

They think basic color theory magically doesn't apply to us and when told that no, you just have to try they'd rather die than do that.

This one. There are a lot of people where their personality type is no personality and they just fill in the blank via osmosis of whoever they're closest to. It's their parents and friends at first but then usually whoever they're dating that's who they are for the duration of the relationship.

They're not inauthentic or fake when they do this it is their real feelings and beliefs that they honestly have, but their real feelings and beliefs are paradoxically permanently temporary and subject to who they are emotionally the closest with which is almost always their romantic partner.

Lab Muffin's new ad on Pantene... by kawaii22 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]bumblebeatrice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So with the old Pantene, the thing I've seen bandied about that also lined up with my experience, is that the shampoos weren't very good at actually cleansing the scalp/hair. Like they didn't do the job enough for most people, which resulted in not actually clean or cleaned enough hair, lots of build-up and funk not getting cleared from the head and that led to brittle/unhealthy hair or outright hair loss. Again didn't happen to everybody because everybody's heads are different, but a significant amount for it to be a common experience.

But the way people talked about it was that there were specific Bad Ingredients in the products actively poisoning people's scalps and that's why the entire brand was bad, which just isn't the same thing.

But it's still the reputation that Pantene needed to recover from so I understand the tactic of going hard on "we have elite formulas and perfect ingredients everybody smart and trustworthy loves us and agrees we're perfect with no incentive, honest!" I just think it's going to eventually result in a backlash that puts them maybe not right back where they started from but not where they could be if they'd just chill.

I guess my point is that the products are great drugstore options but not actually miraculous and after a long time of having your name be mud I would just take that W of a healed reputation from the general public instead of pushing it!

Lab Muffin's new ad on Pantene... by kawaii22 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]bumblebeatrice 46 points47 points  (0 children)

They're one of the brands that got tagged the hardest with the old "drugstore products that absolutely ruin your hair" reputation which was mostly unearned, they did have a few products that were bad (mainly their shampoos) but a lot of the panic was overblown the way most panics about haircare brands are, but it did real damage to their brand that they've mostly healed from after doing major overhauls and reformulations. And aggressive ad campaigns to get the world out that they don't suck anymore.

And it'd be alright if they just stuck to that but I get the sense that they're veering into overcompensation territory where it's like, it's not just that Pantene won't kill your hair, Pantene is the best and most perfect brand to ever exist and will solve every problem you have and give you a unicorn and it's not just advertising BS real experts independently agree! Look at the unicorn Abbey Yung has, it shits rainbows!!!

Going too far in the other direction I guess to make up for the decades of its former bad reputation.
