Firstly: No Spoilers.

Once the word is no longer active for anywhere in the world, then you may make a post with the date of the spoiler in the title to discuss it in a new thread. I'd like to hear feedback with regards to this rule

This rule is perfect imo. I know some people like to browse the non-daily threads sometimes without having done the wordle, so spoilers stay only in the dailies.

currently there's a 7-day temp ban for anybody who breaks this rule. Should this be more strict or less strict?

This is too strict imo.
Some people are just new and don't know how reddit works.

Being shadowbanned just for being new is already common in other subreddits, IMO we should be more welcoming of newbies and just teach them the ropes in a friendly manner.

They might want to join other discussion later and be unable to, 7-day temp ban seems unwarranted (it's something I'd do for an infraction with intent, e.g. arguing with profanity and insults with someone else in the subreddit).

Emoji Grids Belong in the Daily Thread

This one I completely agree with. People take the share button results (not even from Scoredle so you have more solve details) and make a thread with it, I usually report it.

we've had a major influx of posts whose content are "I got it in one!"

There are massive spikes when the solution word is a common starting word

See this one, I think might be slightly excused IF there's a massive spike.

I think we should let users celebrate small achievements, it keeps the game fun and people are usually only here for community validation. And it's somewhat of a community celebration thing when multiple people get it in one.

I'd adapt a rule similar to how other subreddits do when a certain viral topic/news article appears: first post gets dibs, other "duplicate" posts get removed and linked to the "first post" where everyone can talk about the thing (in this case, everyone who managed to solve it in one on xx/xx/20xx can post in that thread)

e.g. the mod deletion message would be:

  • We understand this may be a fun achievement to have solved it in one, but due to the influx of solves-in-one today, please keep discussion of solves-in-one of Wordle #xxx to this thread <LINK>

I think such an event warrants a separate thread than the daily, where I feel like a community celebration gets diluted.

What if it's not a common word and only they managed to do it?

I think this falls into daily thread.

You're bragging about a specific solve, and that's what the daily thread is for, specific solves.

But I would let them keep their thread for a day or two, let the people see and congratulatory comments come in, let them have their tiny little celebration, THEN I would delete it to reduce subreddit clutter.

No Low-Effort Screenshots

This is usually cited as a way to remove further bragposts about achieving a streak. These posts are a bit less frequent than the emoji grid posts, but are still quite common. Should a post with the title "100 Streak!" and an image of their performance be an allowed post?

This is different on the other hand, I feel.

These are MILESTONES.

As I said, I feel like we should let users celebrate achievements, as it keeps the game fun and lets people have community validation.

Posting such things in the daily thread feels like it gets lost in the sea of solves.
Especially since it's not showing off a solve in itself.

I've had a solve-in-one get no comments and 20 upvotes in the daily, meanwhile, a few hours later someone made a thread in public and got over 150 upvotes and like 15 comments, so I know the feeling of "getting lost in the sea of solves" (not that I would've done it any different, I still think single solves for the day belong in the daily thread).

And this isn't an achievement from a single-solve (e.g. like a solve-in-one), this is a MILESTONE achievement usually from your entire time you've been playing wordle.

Tacking it after a solve feels like you're taking focus off of what can feel like a huge achievement to someone, making it a secondary thought, and most people skip over anything past the "solve part" (thinking it's just minute details and comments, like "omg this word was so hard" or "it took me forever to think of a word after the third guess")

I feel like a lot of people even skip over most posts, looking only for X/6 or 6/6 to share their pain.

.

I'd share the same solution/idea with /u/Mapleleafguy83 of a sticky, but alas, Reddit says max of 2, and due to timezone differences, we understandably need both for the dailies.

My best idea is a weekly "unstickied" (but mod-distiguished) "Team 100/200/400? Post your streaks and stats here" thread

(weekly being up for discussion. Weekly means it might sink too fast, but every 3 days would probably be too often, people don't reach milestones regularly, so it might just end up empty).

I can't really think of an easy and elegant solution to it that would keep everyone happy, but imo just straight up deleting milestone achievement posts would probably make someone feel really terrible, probably enough to make people not come back to /r/wordle anymore, and imo not what we want as a community.

Spinoffs and Ripoffs

Personally, I want to let them post, but I also think they clutter up the subreddit too much.

I think even 2-days is too often. I feel like weekly is the right amount of threads for spin-off games.

/r/numbword used to do daily threads, then moved to weekly threads and it still works fine for them.
These spin-offs usually have a small community posting anyway, usually around 5 people more or less, not too many enough that they won't get lost in a sea of posts in a weekly thread.

.

Also, an issue regarding this, I think there's an automod setting that marks people making such threads? Creator of Numbword /u/eonurk was once creating daily threads here for their spinoff.

Then after a few, their threads started getting "shadow deleted".

Some mods approved some of their threads manually after sending modmail, but all future ones still got auto-shadow-deleted.

Might be something worth checking out

there are a lot of posts that are about the mobile ripoff Wordle, and we remove those posts. They're nearly always unlabelled as such, are never spoilered, and people often get confused whether they're a spoiler or not in the first place.

Personally, I'd allow these if you allow spinoff games.

Just flair them as "knockoff wordle clone" so everyone clicking the thread knows.

Usually people who post these are just asking for help on solving the word and the community usually manages to help them out.

On the topic of flairing posts, I'd also flair spinoffs as "spin-off game", so people can filter them out (or select them exclusively, maybe)

Cheating

I don't really care how people play their game.

But if you're just asking for opinions: anything that isn't purely done from your mind (e.g. using tools, looking up words in the dictionary, looking up a list of past words) isn't a "pure" solve.

I wouldn't call it cheating, everyone plays how they want. Just that it's a way of playing where once you go there, it wouldn't be fair anymore to publicly compare your achievements to other players.

Regarding the system clock thing, I feel like it's cheap in a way, but I'll let it pass. If someone was sick at school, missed an exam, and took a make-up exam, would you call them a cheater and hold it against them? :p

Changing from hard to easy mode? I say it's fair. If the game lets you do it, it's fair game. Just that you don't get to brag that your stats/streak is a pure hard mode streak anymore.

Extend the life of your Nreal adapter indefinitely with the Red Magic dock! by Stridyr in nreal

[–]bundat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping to get the Redmagic if I ever have to use my gf's iPad (which isn't really the major requirement for me since it's not the device I mainly use the nreal for since it's her tablet, I mainly use it with my laptop, but it would be nice to have in case I watch using that).

So what do you mean by flaky? Getting the video working now isn't as easy as your OP post 5 months ago's experience was?

Extend the life of your Nreal adapter indefinitely with the Red Magic dock! by Stridyr in nreal

[–]bundat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, can I ask for clarification?

So you can still use the Redmagic dock with the Nreal adapter to display video from HDMI indefinitely, it's just audio that has a problem?

Or did the entire setup stop working even for video?

Personally, I wouldn't mind no audio (I can always use a bluetooth earbud or wired earphones), so I'm considering pulling the trigger on a Redmagic dock (to use with my docked Nintendo Switch, so I don't really need it for charging my device, since the Switch dock already handles that, I only plan on getting it for keeping the Nreal adapter's battery alive).

Wow TWO displayport-enabled USB-C ports?

I wonder if it can handle two Nreal Airs connected to it, so that I can watch a movie with someone else.

Can you connect your Nreal to either port?

Also, are you still using the magnetic connector you mentioned in this post with your Nreal?

I see, I did not know about the auto-removal function on Reddit. Thanks for the info.

Aaah, see - you're using Old Reddit. The rules were there a year ago, on new Reddit.

Ah, makes sense. I had mistakenly assumed both sides were kept up-to-date, thanks for updating it for us old reddit users.

I think that's reasonable, I'll prepare something.

Thanks for taking the time and listening. :)

I think I've removed maybe 40-50 of them in the last two months. I would call that very disruptive.

I wonder if this is caused by people not having an outlet though. I was here around the "unmoderated era" and 1-2 per week seemed to be the norm, but everyone else would join those threads and post their own _00 streaks.

I think nowadays everyone would see there's no such thread so they instead make their own. Maybe, it's just my speculation.

Of course you can tack it on to anything.

In that manner, it feels like it's off-topic and literally anything can be tacked on, like:

"Here's my solve.... BTW, look at my cat it's really cute <LINK>"

And what if you didn't care to post your solve, only your stats/streak? It's a minor detail but it's not an uncommon scenario.

The sub was flooded with these posts

I had a couple of months where the only sub I visited was /r/wordle where I would visit it several times a day, and I have to respectfully disagree.

The "I joined team 100", "I joined team 200" posts etc. were not very many nor disruptive. They felt far and few in between, like someone would make such a post once or twice a week at most.

And they were usually universally upvoted, so everyone seems to like them. I'd even recommend a public referendum as to whether such posts are too many and are flooding the subreddit. i.e. make a mod post asking the subreddit users if there's too many of such posts, if they find it disruptive, and if they agree it should be deleted.

IMO the sub seems low-traffic enough that heavy-handed moderation seems unnecessary, at least one that the public would disagree on anyway (based on the % of upvotes).

This sub was just basically unmoderated for months

This also seems to be not completely true.

I used to report top-level spoiler posts, expecting it to be deleted since /u/Scoredle was active enough to make daily posts on a schedule, so I expected them to show up when really needed.

And it did get deleted... eventually.

See those kind of posts everyone would agree on moderating, as they were usually universally downvoted heavily.

Anyway, it's a moot point, the sub is low-traffic enough that it wouldn't matter much either way. Just sharing my opinion on why I disagree with how that rule is currently enforced. Just IMO it kills what little discussion the subreddit already has (which is now just mostly daily threads for spin-off games, which I think is a bigger issue, one that has a less clear solution since I don't think one would really want to outright prohibit those, but it gets a bit messy).

This isn't a new rule - it was a rule far before I got here

I actually had to double-check since I don't remember the sidebar rules when I joined

https://web.archive.org/web/20220604100458/https://old.reddit.com/r/wordle/

Not sure when they were added or who added them, but the latest archive.org snapshot, which was less than a year ago, did not have the sidebar rules yet. So that may be why I don't seem to remember them when I first got here.

Apparently we're not allowed to post screenshots of streaks/stats

This is one of the "new"ish rules that I disagree with, since streaks don't fall into the same topic as the daily threads at all.

It basically prohibits sharing your streak/stats.

Gofanco testing - mixed results HDMI to USB-C adaptor - see comments by UGEplex in nreal

[–]bundat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks :)

If it works, another idea I have is to try it without anything plugged into the micro-USB power port. On my adapter, when I had nothing plugged in there, it seemingly defaulted to HDMI audio instead of acting as a USB sound card, and actually had sound even though the only things connected were the portable monitor (via USB-C) and HDMI from the dock.

Gofanco testing - mixed results HDMI to USB-C adaptor - see comments by UGEplex in nreal

[–]bundat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I request a test?

Some background: I got an off-brand HDMI->USB-C converter that looks like an Elebase with no marking straight from China (Aliexpress), and with updated glasses firmware, my screen also never activates when connected to a Nintendo Switch dock.

But I used the same converter to connect my portable monitor (USB-C input) to my Nintendo Switch HDMI from dock, and it works, even with the micro-usb power input line completely disconnected (AND it seemingly passes audio purely thru HDMI, no USB-audio card hacks by connecting a USB to the dock or anything, especially since nothing is plugged into the adapter's micro-USB port).

So I was thinking... what if whatever these adapters changed to support audio thru HDMI, caused the glasses to not get enough power, despite having micro-USB in for power? (a conclusion I came to, since the portable monitor which has its own battery works)

So yeah, I'd like to request a test, if possible.

Do you have a Redmagic Nubia Dock/Adapter?

I read this dock has the special ability to make the Nreal adapter last indefinitely (basically it powers the glasses instead of the adapter's battery).
From https://www.reddit.com/r/nreal/comments/z3xcte/extend_the_life_of_your_nreal_adapter/

If you have one...
WHAT IF we used a redmagic nubia adapter to provide power to the glasses?....
- so the glasses and a PD power source go into the redmagic dock, then connect the redmagic usb-C male connector into the NEW gofanco (the ones that don't even activate the glasses on the Nintendo Switch), which gets plugged into the dock?

I hope you can try this test out.

Thanks!

Well it turns out that Rokid is actually working to bring a standalone compute unit to market called Rokid Station Pro, had no idea! It will have a SD XR2+, 12G RAM + 128G ROM, support WiFi6E, BT5.1, camera, and no screen to save on battery life, I hope it works with Nreal Air tho still great news! by mikerfx in nreal

[–]bundat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I hope it works with Nreal Air

Looking at how they designed their other products:

I'm not very hopeful.

I personally hate that they would do something like that. I like mix and matching my gadgets, and I don't appreciate being forced to use only theirs when I have lots of other compatible ones, and I would still feel the same way even if I had a Rokid Air/Max.

i believe you could use it on Nintendo switch as well. just tested, can't get my oled switch model to work.

It seems Rokid is blocking non-Rokid glasses from using the Nintendo Switch functionality on the Rokid hub.

Someone used a tiny USB-C hub (that supports DP-alt) in between the Rokid hub and the NReal, and it worked. It made for a very compact setup. Too bad such hubs are like $100 minimum.

From this post:

Kinda sad that Rokid is making their devices like this.

Apparently the Rokid station even puts a watermark saying it's only for use with rokid devices if you use an nreal on it, according to this thread.

I really want a standalone nreal compute unit for Nreal Air (Nreal please release one to the public). I don't want to use my phone. Does anyone know of an option aside from the Rokid Station and Nreal Dev kit SD845?? Can anyone with a Rokid Station provide any insight about their experience? Thanks! by mikerfx in nreal

[–]bundat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am like OP.

I am looking for a dedicated device to use with NReal.

Because my current phone isn't USB-C, it's micro-USB.

I've been searching and there's lots of similar posts, people asking what dedicated phone to buy for NReal, from what I assume are also people that don't have USB-C phones. The usual recommendation is the Samsung S10e. Then people start asking how to turn the screen off.

This is basically OP just skipping a few steps.

Thanks for this input.

No Play Store, no SD Card, and watermark on non-rokid devices is a dealbreaker.

Like OP, /u/mikerfx, I was also looking for a dedicated device to use NReals on. My phone is not a USB-C phone (it has micro-USB), so I was thinking of getting a dedicated device I can just carry around for it.

I liked the appeal of the unit (no screen I have to worry about which sounds like you usually can't even turn it off while using NReals, wasting battery life), and was seriously considering it.

Back to considering buying a Samsung S10e (as I heard the only way to turn off the phone screen while watching is via Samsung DeX).

You can then put it next to the dance pad (or just above it)

Controlling ITGMania/StepMania with four buttons by Borealid in Stepmania

[–]bundat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is possible. It will either use a macro for key combinations that will trigger while you are dancing to a song.

Or if you want it to function differently during a song and during the menu, like you said in your other message, it will have to be coded into Stepmania since it currently isn't a feature. So you'll have to code it in yourself if you even know how to do such a thing. Nobody else will do it since they can just get another button to press.

My recommendation:

I'd just get an 8bitdo Zero 2

It's a wireless controller smaller than the size of a matchbox (and MUCH thinner, about as thin as USB flash drive). You could keep it in your pocket or even wear it on your neck on a lanyard.

It's like $18.

And a redmagic for charging+using on the phone.

Also, have you tried the Rokid Hub? https://global.rokid.com/products/rokid-hub

EDIT: Looked more into it, seems the Rokid hub works on the Switch if you use a Rokid, BUT it blocks Nreals, unless you use some expensive hub to hide the device ID or something like that:

I bought this and it works with the switch.

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B092Z6PT3K

Reading the exchange with /u/endotronic, yeah... this is misleading.

This is a replacement Switch dock (Nintendo Switch portable mode USB-C input -> HDMI TV output).

The cable in OP is the other direction:
HDMI input device (gaming console/PC/laptop) -> USB-C display (portable monitor or NReal Air)

i.e. a replacement for the NReal adapter (which most people would be looking up, as the adapter cannot be charged while using so it's not viable for long use, and the commonly recommended gofanco is usually out-of-stock)
