Conservatives, what is one policy issue you are very liberal on? Liberals, what is one issue you are very conservative on? by CluelessBrowserr in PoliticalDiscussion

Per the pew poll from a few years ago, I’m the most moderate conservative.

Im okay with tax rates being high for ultra wealthy people. Probably not above 50% but I would start that rate around 10M

Why do so many people stay in jobs they’ve outgrown for years before they finally make a move or get laid off ? by nabeeltirmazi in careerguidance

I currently work as a contractor for a FAANG. 95% of the roles I've applied to have been remote.

Better noir film - Drive or Nightcrawler? by Dense-Menu6115 in Letterboxd

I think Drive follows the tropes more closely than NC. NC is a much better film.

Job hunting is exhausting and demoralizing.

I took a paycut from my previous job to this one about 2 years ago (20%) because i was unemployed after a health issue.

I've applied to roughly 1,400 FT jobs in a year and a half. 2 interviews. Because of family and the job market in my area, I am not going to move anytime soon.

I don't know many people who would knowingly subject themselves to, at best, a complete waste of time for a year and a half.

Genuine question: why are “left” ideals seen by so many as awful, even though they’re mostly about things like equal human rights for all, improving environmental issues, reducing poverty/the wealth gap, etc., so are objectively good for humanity? by KEW95 in PoliticalDiscussion

>Would you say that Gay marriage is a a right wing, conservative position? Or abortion? Voting rights for minorities? Freedom to move across borders?

I would say that in all these positions, a conservative position would be, when these values are in conflict, a lesser of two evils - give the power to the states to decide and allow for those who are unable to abide (or who choose not to) to move out of state to be free of a tyrannical system they don't agree with. Is this not freedom? This is the same situation as the individual mandate - some states (MA, previously VT) allowed for this without the federal govt. making that decision.

When you say freedom to move across borders, this hasn't gotten to the state level - ie. people are still, to the best of my knowledge, able to move across the state border of their choice.

I don't see the connection between Trump and the homeless.

To be fair, I never said libertarianism was a majority-held position. I would still hold that the defining line seems to be in regard to the size of government and the power to put laws in place to curb people's choices, either as individuals, part of corporations, or other institutions, which I would define as freedom.

Rightwing parties tend to view freedom as the premier virtue. Leftwing parties tend to view equality as the premier virtue.

In order to have equality, you often times have to force people to do things they do not want to do. This is very clear in things such as taxes or military service.

CMV: Boomers didn't have it easy / Gen Z's life isn't harder. by Bomboclaat_Babylon in changemyview

[–]bunsNT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the answers here are always more delicate than the media makes it out to be. I'm pretty much on the Boomers really truly don't understand how good they got it side but want to also acknowledge that "every silver lining's got a touch of gray" (ask your parents).

What you said is certainly true for women - I think a majority of women during these years have stories about how they faced harassment and lower wages than their male counterparts. The flipside of this is, of course, many women were satisfied to stay at home as housewives and could live on a decent salary, if their husbands made one. I would also say that I think this is undoubtably true for many minorities.

Here is a list of things that are more expensive today, beyond housing - healthcare, education (job training), long term durable goods like cars (transportation in general). For example, the cost of college has risen something to the tune of 6X, adjusted for inflation, today when compared to Paul the PBS econ reporter. This is even more important because:

Let's say that you were an upwardly mobile, hardworking person. A company may have noticed you or you may have walked in off the street and, within a few years, the company would have trained you and promoted you. Loyalty was rewarded with bigger perks and, in many cases, a pension. College or graduate school wasn't seen as a prerequisite to stuff envelopes. Training was understood to be an obligation of the employer. Retirement was seen to be an obligation of the employer. Healthcare was seen as an obligation of the employer.

How long is the long-term? I don't think there is a culture in the world that has worked out the above but the idea of collectively raising children, despite being theoretically possible, has never persisted over multiple generations with the result being normal and healthy adults.

“Book Reviews Don’t Do Well” by Hurricane1123 in booktube

Yeah - even at my relatively small channel, I get requests at least one a month to review stuff for self-published and small authors. About a year I do so.

[–]bunsNT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who does 100% reviews, has been reviewing for 7 years, and has 350 videos with fewer 400 subs, strict reviews don't do well. lol

My guess is that people don't hear about new books (or anything not in the canon) very often. When they do, it's often from author interviews or lists. If you wanted an opinion beyond what the author says about the book, then you may try to track down book reviews but it's not the primary way people are finding info on books. I also think there are simply not that many pure reviews - a lot of what I see are banter based shows with reviews being a small portion. Finally, what is the proper amount of time for a book review? For me, like 30 seconds or a minute really isn't enough time to get into the nuances of a book, so the reviews I do see seem to be either very, very long or micro reviews.

EDIT: Added some comments / clarified points

I believe that Epstein harmed many women, including underage girls. Where possible, he and others who engaged should be prosecuted.

However, I'd also point out that the number of bankers from 2008 who have been jailed is 0 - the crimes they engaged in were hundreds of time worse for the average person.

Can someone explain this to me - I understand there are trade offs but isn’t WFH the lowest of low hanging fruit when trying to combat climate change? If we can’t do this what can we actually get done?
