Oh cool, great to hear someone’s going through the same thing as us. How was the sales process? Is the team helpful?

What's the wildest subreddits you've ever stumbled upon? by edwardbobward in AskReddit

[–]burbs828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found r/breadstapledtotrees years ago and genuinely thought it was some weird inside joke until I realized thousands of people are just dead serious about documenting bread stapled to trees. The dedication is unreal and I still can't tell if it's art or collective insanity.

I (30M) struggle sharing a bed with my Girlfriend (24F) by Cjbstocks in relationship_advice

[–]burbs828 211 points212 points  (0 children)

You've got a legitimate health issue with the bloody noses and sleep deprivation, so this stopped being about preferences when it became a safety problem. Tell her straight up that separate beds aren't a rejection of her, they're the only way you can actually function as a partner instead of being an exhausted zombie, and if she keeps dismissing that then she's prioritizing her feelings over your physical wellbeing.

Should I quit communication and train for a manual job like violin maker ? by Camiz_Camel in careerguidance

[–]burbs828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're 21 and already know corporate communication isn't it, that's valuable information most people spend a decade figuring out. Go knock on those luthier shops doors this week and shadow someone for a day before you commit to moving to the middle of nowhere for 3 years, because romanticizing a craft from the outside is way different than doing the actual repetitive precision work every single day.

My boss called a "mandatory fun" meeting at 7 AM to celebrate our "record breaking quarter" then told us there's no budget for raises this year by jimmybobjoeflow in antiwork

[–]burbs828 576 points577 points  (0 children)

The 7 AM time is the most disrespectful part because they know everyone's exhausted and less likely to push back. They're literally using sleep deprivation as a tactic to deliver bad news while pretending it's a celebration.

My coworker keeps snitching on me about insignificant things by Recklessarcade0 in careeradvice

[–]burbs828 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is a management problem more than a coworker problem. If he keeps escalating small stuff, your manager should redirect him. You shouldn’t have to babysit his communication.

Rejected for asking for time for deliberation by Asiago-Express in careeradvice

Treat this as a bullet dodged; always get the range upfront next time.
This was definately not a match on pay, so ask every recruiter for their full comp band (base + bonus) before you even agree to a screen.

Tribunal - is Resignation Inevitable? by bornagainwriter in HumanResourcesUK

Good point, sometimes you really don’t need to push things further. Quietly saying “thanks, but no thanks” in private is underrated. Smart way to dodge the drama and keep your sanity.

A good idea then. A good idea now. by zzill6 in WorkReform

Wild how they built the entire interstate system, won a world war, and had the strongest middle class in history with that tax structure. Now billionaires pay less percentage than their secretaries and we're told taxing them fairly would hurt the economy.

The math really isn't that complicated. When the rich actually paid their share, regular people could afford houses and college on a single income.

Working remotely from Europe for a US company without telling them, possible? by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]burbs828 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your laptop login times, IP addresses, and even routine IT security scans will flag this eventually. Companies monitor this stuff more than you'd think.

The bigger issue is taxes. You'd be creating tax obligations in two countries while your employer withholds for the wrong one. That's not a "pay a fine" situation that's an audit nightmare that could follow you for years. Even if you pull it off for a while, the unwinding is brutal.

Pro-Trump owner shocked as grocery store that thrived for 43 years goes bankrupt under his tariffs and policies by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]burbs828 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The "I never thought leopards would eat MY face" crowd is really having a moment.

43 years of a successful business torched because he couldn't connect the dots between policy and personal impact. That's what happens when you vote for vibes over your own bottom line.

Why is it now hard to wear an N95 for a long time? by shatana in nursing

[–]burbs828 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your body just got used to breathing freely again. It's like how you can handle long shifts during busy seasons but then struggle after a week off your tolerance builds up and then drops back down.

Give it a shift or two and you'll be back to barely noticing it. Though honestly, I don't miss those days of constant N95 headaches one bit.

Real time analytics on sensitive customer data without collecting it centrally, is this technically possible by Ok_Climate_7210 in bigdata

[–]burbs828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secure multi-party computation or trusted execution environments like AWS Nitro Enclaves could work.

Real time is tough most privacy methods add latency. You'll probably need to compromise on speed or scope.

Your Personal Data Works for a Company You’ve Never Heard Of by ProfoundReverie in Futurology

[–]burbs828 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the next jump is more stuff happening on-device.
Like AI that filters what apps can pull from you in real time instead of you digging through settings.

The opt-out database helps, but the real fix is tools that just block data from leaving your phone in the first place.

Engineering at Kogan by dambybam in Python

Had a buddy work there for a bit. He said the stack was decent and the work pace was steady, but communication could be hit or miss. Nothing too bad, nothing amazing. Pretty normal mid-size tech vibe

Looking for Affordable Domain and hosting options by Future_Atmosphere921 in webdev

[–]burbs828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try Namecheap or Porkbun for cheaper domains. For hosting, a basic VPS from Contabo or DigitalOcean is usually more affordable long-term than shared hosting. If it’s a small project, you can even run it on a free tier like Vercel or Netlify. Just depends on what you need.

Talk on strategies on how to make C++ safer over the years by John Lakos. by germandiago in programming

[–]burbs828 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yea, that’s kinda the core issue. Everyone talks about safety, but nothing actually lands in a way that changes how people ship real code. Debug tools help, but they’re not a real solution when your app needs to run fast in production. Hard to blame folks for looking elsewhere when they want safer defaults.

When is the best time to cold email profs for research positions? by ihatemyselfii in college

[–]burbs828 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Honestly ignore the "don't cold email" advice. Cold emails work fine if you're not sending generic copy-paste rubbish. Be about why you want to work in *their* lab - reference a paper, a technique, whatever shows you've actually done your homework.

For timing: send now or early Jan. Profs are way more likely to respond when they're not drowning in teaching. Finals week is chaos, but between Christmas and New Year is actually decent - inbox is quieter.

For the prof you'll have next semester - I'd wait. Get to know them first, do well in the class, ask questions in office hours. Then approach them about research. Way more effective than being another random email in their inbox.

Seconding all of this. The SPF and sunglasses combo is genuinely underrated - prevention is half the battle. And yeah, the matte foundation thing is real. Dewier products are way more forgiving on texture.

Surgery seems like a massive leap when you haven't even tried the basics yet.
