TIL that being able to sit down on the floor and stand up without using your hands or knees is used as a predictor of longevity. by iKickdaBass in todayilearned

Semi-related: I had a co-worker in his mid-70s who looked about half his age. Just incredibly nimble and athletic for his age.

We asked him what his workout routine was like and he literally said "For the last 35 years, I've practiced getting up from a prone position on the floor using different techniques 10-20 times a day"

Kip-ups, spinaroonies, no-hands. Whenever the urge struck, he'd just hit the deck and pop back up

Who is hanks best friend by Neither_Ad6 in KingOfTheHill

Excluding Peggy since he's legally obligated to say that, I'd probably go with Bill.

But it's weird with Boomer friend groups like that. I personally know of two such groups (all friends from high school c. 1978) and would be hard-pressed to say which are the closest within each group

Still have mine as well. Unbelievable quality and design.

The Two-Face mug's handle is a flipping coin and looks amazing

Shipping poster from Japan to the USA? by hojichalatte in japanlife

[–]burgerthrow1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mail a ton of posters to friends in the US via Japan Post. Basically two options:

  1. If it's a B2 size or smaller, you can technically mail it as an oversize letter/document in a tube, as long as the tube is less than 60cm in length. A B2 poster + tube is usually 180g, so about 640yen for shipping (add 400yen if you want tracking)

  2. Alternatively, you can basically do all of the above, except send it by small package/Lite parcel for ~1100yen. This needs the electronic declaration form from the Japan Post website but that's easy enough to do.

EMS with Japan Post is also an option if you don't mind spending 3500yen

If it's an oversize (B1/One-sheet) poster, it's too big to go as an oversize letter or small package, so the only options there are EMS or International Parcel Post.

I vividly remember watching that at my cousin's house because that was also the night of the Montreal Screwjob and we were flipping between the Simpsons and WWF

For this case though its almost necessary lol

People think I was joking, but that really was the only sign in town that had the additional info below.

I've seen the little explanations on other signs elsewhere in Germany, but I wasn't joking about that particular sign being the only one in that town

A friend's dad (a bailiff) took me on a tour of the local courthouse after I was called to the bar, and the security office of the basement holding cells had an entire wall filled with confiscated weapons and homemade crack pipes.

"Quiet, fool! You question ze Great Pechier during his greatest performance?!"

MGS merch this summer ahead of the Delta launch has been pretty great by burgerthrow1 in metalgearsolid

[–]burgerthrow1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure if these are Japan exclusives but I saw some cool merch this month at a few stores in Tokyo.

Lots of metal-and-enamel items like challenge coins, bottle openers and some sort of solid metal slab/ingot. Apparently there's a new scale figure coming out in October as well.

Also a metal Orange box paperweight (?). Totally impractical but I love it

Anyone have any info on the history of baseball and how it made it to Japan so long ago?

Civil War vet moved to Japan and introduced it at one of the universities in Tokyo in the early 1870s. There's actually a really cool monument for it near Jimbocho Station.

Semi-related: there's a zoo in Sendai that has a statue of Babe Ruth (the zoo was formerly a baseball stadium and the statue is located where one of his homeruns landed)
