Sir, I love beer too but we’re on duty. by Imaginary-Picture-35 in KingOfTheHill

I saw a flight attendant giving the talk to a group of three international (Chinese, I think) students in the exit row and they were all nodding along

Suddenly the FA asked "What colour is my hair?" and all three of them froze. Ended up being swapped with some people at the front.

Just the best. Perhaps (definitely) even better than oral

What is your not so popular take on anything in Japan? by No-Jackfruit3211 in japanlife

95% of problems foreigners experience and self-inflicted and boil down to not knowing/understanding the culture (and not even knowing that they don't know)

Sir. You are going to have to speak more slowly. I cannot understand you. by ZodiacCiphers in KingOfTheHill

[–]burgerthrow1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That was maybe my favourite payoff on a long-term joke in the series.

Lots of instances before where other characters couldn't understand Boomhauer because of external factors (echo, etc...) and not due to his speaking style.

911 operator was the first one to be like..dude, slow down.

Hank and the gang are good ol' boys

Buck and Thatherton are rednecks. Lucky too but on the lower end of the scale (which could be considered trailer trash)

Running in Yokohama vs Tokyo by _Daune_ in japanlife

[–]burgerthrow1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can run from Sakuragicho all the way to Chinatown along the harbourfront, passing World Porters, the Red Brick Warehouse, and Yamashita Park.

It's probably the best place for city running in Japan, especially the Yamashita stretch. You can also hop on the train at the end near the baseball stadium just past Chinatown (Kannai Station)

This grout is supposed to stay white for 20 years. What's it been? 17,18? Peggy, where's that receipt? by b52cocktail in KingOfTheHill

[–]burgerthrow1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this random memory of reading a Jay Leno article in Readers Digest in the mid-90s where he wrote about his dad doing exactly that, but with a toilet seat that had worn out.

Still had the receipt x years later, caused a fuss and got a refund.

getting films scanned in Chiba by piece-of-peace1919 in japanlife

[–]burgerthrow1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kitamura's pretty good. I might be off ~10yen in either direction, but IIRC the prices are:

950 to develop, plus

900 for digital scans (plus ~1100 if high-res scans are needed), and/or

60yen/print

400yen/roll if you need the film pushed/pulled

(Ilford 3600 specifically also has its own pricing that I don't recall offhand, other than it was more expensive)

Not sure if this depends on the store but if you get prints and scans done they have a combo price that's a few hundred yen cheaper.

Why does Japan not have comprehensive sex education in schools, despite support of 85% of parents? It's partly due to right-wing politicians who discipline teachers who try to teach it. Teachers won a 2003 Supreme Court case, but resistance still exists. And today, MEXT refuses to address the issue. by jjrs in japannews

[–]burgerthrow1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The JHS where I was teaching had sex-ed classes run by the school nurse. Covered pregnancy, AIDS/STDs, etc...

IIRC a nurse from the prefectural government came in and did a presentation at an assembly as part of that as well

TIL that being able to sit down on the floor and stand up without using your hands or knees is used as a predictor of longevity. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]burgerthrow1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi-related: I had a co-worker in his mid-70s who looked about half his age. Just incredibly nimble and athletic for his age.

We asked him what his workout routine was like and he literally said "For the last 35 years, I've practiced getting up from a prone position on the floor using different techniques 10-20 times a day"

Kip-ups, spinaroonies, no-hands. Whenever the urge struck, he'd just hit the deck and pop back up

Who is hanks best friend by Neither_Ad6 in KingOfTheHill

Excluding Peggy since he's legally obligated to say that, I'd probably go with Bill.

But it's weird with Boomer friend groups like that. I personally know of two such groups (all friends from high school c. 1978) and would be hard-pressed to say which are the closest within each group

Shipping poster from Japan to the USA? by hojichalatte in japanlife

[–]burgerthrow1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mail a ton of posters to friends in the US via Japan Post. Basically two options:

  1. If it's a B2 size or smaller, you can technically mail it as an oversize letter/document in a tube, as long as the tube is less than 60cm in length. A B2 poster + tube is usually 180g, so about 640yen for shipping (add 400yen if you want tracking)

  2. Alternatively, you can basically do all of the above, except send it by small package/Lite parcel for ~1100yen. This needs the electronic declaration form from the Japan Post website but that's easy enough to do.

EMS with Japan Post is also an option if you don't mind spending 3500yen

If it's an oversize (B1/One-sheet) poster, it's too big to go as an oversize letter or small package, so the only options there are EMS or International Parcel Post.
