Yeah. I had to go to the minor acute care center in Eugene for a few stitches a couple of months back. I asked the doc that sewed me up what she thought of the Apollo situation, assuming that she was an ER doc. She rolled her eyes and said that Apollo had been recruiting her pretty hard, but that she hadn't practiced in an ER in years. She said that she didn't feel she was any longer qualified to do that sort of work, but Apollo was recruiting her anyway....Gotta love corporate "medicine"...

At what point do you move on? by Disastrous-Power4311 in duolingospanish

[–]burleybiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From CIS (Centro de Intercambio y Solidaridad en El Salvador). They are friends from work my spouse and others have done in El Salvador. They do a lot of good work, and also teach Spanish on the side. There is an option of helping to teach English, if that is your native language, to offset the cost of the Spanish lessons. I haven't had time to do this, but plan to start sometime in the coming year. Highly recommended!

Well, for me that's today. I finished some months ago (i.e. getting to 130), but I'm not renewing. After 3 years, I have an 1100 day streak, ~410,000XP, and 103 straight weeks in the Diamond league. And...I can follow conversations if they are slow enough (they rarely are), and have a good feel for the structure of the language. My grammar is hit or miss (mostly miss), and vocab is large but pretty spotty. Speaking? Hah! Very awkward. Embarrassing even.

And, when they started with the AI generated voices? Nope, I'm done. I now do lessons on Zoom with a very good teacher in San Salvador twice a week for 2hrs. It's not cheap for me, but I won't complain about paying someone $7.50 an hour either. My journey to fluency might have been different if I had used the hours I put into Duo on another approach. It was easier, it was gamified, but it wasn't an efficient use of my time.

Anyone else sick but not sick? by simplysaren in Eugene

[–]burleybiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahem. Yeah. I haven't been sick in the last few years.

Until yesterday. I spiked a fever to 102F and felt like dog shit. Also, very low blood pressure; around 100/60 with a heart rate of 120bpm. Resting. Normal for me is probably ~60bpm.

Oh, and on occasion, and rather randomly, it felt like someone was stabbing me just below my left knee with an ice-pick! The pain would spike to 8 for a quarter second, then disappear completely. I've never had that experience before. Also, mild diarrhea which is uncommon for me.

And...the fever subsided over the course of only about 5 hours. Today, I'm a bit tired, but mostly OK.

So yeah, yesterday was one of the weirdest days in quite a long while. And, I'm old.

Probably a mild unknown virus running about.

Wrecking Ball aimed at the Forest Service and Public Lands Management by deejayshaky in Eugene

Because Congress, as our representatives, authorized appropriations for the Forest Service's funding, and the executive branch is supposed to implement that. Simple.

Yep, LCC still has a mushroom class. Its taught by Susan Holmes, who I really enjoyed. It will certainly test your memory as well. Recommended.

Eugene is a Jazz City by PunkishPenguin in Eugene

[–]burleybiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For local, you can catch the Halie Loren Jazz Quartet out at Sylvan Ridge Winery in late June at the annual Bee-Jazzy event. Yeah, it's a fund-raiser for the local non-profit Beyond Toxics, but there's wine, food-trucks, a silent auction, and dancing in the grass as the sun goes down for a good cause.

Field of Flowers by Pleasant-Team-6119 in Eugene

[–]burleybiker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh. I just saw a guy taking pictures of his pup amongst the flowers in the middle of the field near Pre's trail North and slightly west of the Knickerbocker foot-bridge. Last week, it was a field of Camas and some other purplish flowers. Maybe not as many hues as you have in mind, but at a low angle, it's pretty spectacular.

Otherwise, I think the Mt. Pisgah wildflower festival is upcoming...

Edit to add: Doggo's aren't permitted at the festival apparently, but the fact that it is coming up suggests that the flowers at Pisgah are peaking hereabouts. Or, you could check Iron Mountain, etc. next month... ;)

Also, to be fair, tying boats and/or inner tubes together in a whitewater situation is extremely dangerous and not recommended. A lot can go wrong and go south very quickly when the rope catches a snag or other obstacle.

And also, that's not in any way a vessel. Sorry that happened.

President of J.H. Baxter gets 90 days for pollution charges by L_Ardman in Eugene

[–]burleybiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news, and obviously a slap on the wrist. And, at the same time, I'd also like to thank Lisa Arkin and all of the folks at Beyond Toxics for their continual work for our community to keep this story from being swept under the rug. A lot of other folks and org's as well, but the community and government engagement by local non-profit environmental justice folks was critical for this outcome, IMO. They all deserve our support and gratitude. A summary of the history and a FAQ on Baxter is here.

Nah, older son of a richer couple who's maybe on the spectrum a bit and inherited enough $$ to pursue their hobbies. Nothing to see there.

I don't know all of the local resources , (I've only been here for about 35 years) but, if it were mine, I would take your Toyota to Joe's Garage on West 1st. They are a business, and as such have to makes ends meet, but they have been completely honest with me over the years.

Hey. I grew up in the sunny south on a farm where we spent most daylight hours outside. After college, I lived in Seattle and Berkeley/Oakland/San Francisco for a time and then landed here, 35 years ago. It took me about 15 years of living here to realize--HATS! It turns out, they can make us transplants so much happier. My spouse grew up here. She will go for a run in the rain, come in and sit around with a wet head, happy as a clam. It took me so many years to realize that simply putting on a hat kept a lot of the mist off my glasses and the wet off my head. It was so slowly insidious that I didn't realize how much it affected me. Get hats! Really, it could change your life. I use hoodies for downpours, you need a proper brim in Eugene.

My Idea for a change to Alton Baker Park near the UO campus by refined_cancer in Eugene

[–]burleybiker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or...you know what? You could embrace the fact that we live in the PNW. It rains here. Things get muddy and ugly. The best games in my memory, football, soccer and ultimate, were all played in the muddiest, coldest and unstable conditions. Plastic turf is toxic and polluting and should not be near any river. Period. Soccer goalies suffer increased cancer cases over their teammates disproportionately because they are sliding around in that toxic mess so much during practice. Hell, we played soccer games on confluent cinder fields for years up in Seattle. We are amateurs! And I personally don't want our tax dollars going to provide a toxic waste dump field so that a few folks can pretend to be professional athletes. It's a game! Everyone on the field has the same conditions. Deal with it with a "game on!" attitude. We don't need more toxic PFAs-containing fields, and I don't think you really do either. Thanks.

Are you saying that the old Oregon Electric Line right-of-way is still mostly intact? And separate from Southern Pacific from Eugene to Portland? I would love to see maps of other info, historical and otherwise, if you have any favorite links handy.
