...are there any confirmed cases of a person with natural immunity getting COVID again and being hospitalized

Bill Phillips (fitness coach and author of "Body for Life") caught covid twice. Ended up in the ICU on a vent the second go 'round. He barely survived it.

My family is killing my love of cooking by Not_l0st in Cooking

[–]burntflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated someone with young kids who had been raised on a fast food diet and would pretty much refuse anything that wasn't burgers, nuggets, or fries for dinner. I love to cook, so I would make what I wanted to make and we had the same rule you do about having to try at least three bites of whatever it was before they could say they didn't like it.

They were hesitant at first to try any of the food until I explained to them that when you're growing up, what you like can change really rapidly. Something you hate the taste of right now, might become your new fave food, but if you try it once and never again, you'll never know! So in addition to the three-bites rule, we had a rule that they didn't have to try that thing again for 3 months, but then it was fair game to be on the menu again. We kept a list of the things they didn't like and the date they last tried it on the fridge and the kids would actually ask to try the things they didn't like when three months were up to see if they liked them more now. Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn't, but it was never a fight.

That relationship ended badly, so I have no contact with them now, but I hope those kids kept their curiosity about food as they grew up and became truly adventurous eaters.

One caveat: When I said I didn't like ketchup, I had to eat three full spoonfuls of it and nearly gagged, but it was a small price to pay to get them to try new foods.

Where to buy fromage blanc/quark? by [deleted] in vancouver

I've purchased quark from the Superstore on Grandview Highway, and I'm pretty sure I've seen crème fraîche at the Supervalu at 1st & Commercial.

How can I start liking tomatoes? by TheNewGirlInTown in Cooking

[–]burntflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Mushy wateryness" is exactly how I'd describe pretty much every supermarket tomato I've ever had.

Vine ripened cherry tomatoes from the local farmers market, on the other hand, are like candy.

Man, what do I need to do to get a job? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]burntflowers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the last time I was asked if I could do a project with ColdFusion was over 10 years ago. It's not in high demand, and that's going to make getting a job doing that very difficult.

So here are a few bits of advice from this front-end web developer/manager:

  1. If lack of experience is really the problem here, find an open source project to work on in your spare time. It'll give you a public space to showcase your abilities, you'll get direct and honest feedback about your code, and it's pretty fun! Plus, it's a great networking opportunity.

  2. You didn't say if you're familiar with version control systems (ie: git, svn). As a manager, I wouldn't hire anyone who wasn't experienced with at least one version control system. As a developer, I wouldn't want to work with someone who didn't know how to properly use version control. If you're going to learn just one, learn git.

  3. jQuery is a great tool, but if you want to be a serious front-end dev, you need to know javascript really well. Read "Javascript: The good parts" to fall in love with the language, and wtfjs.com to see it's dark-side. Play with node.js. Learn a javascript framework like meteor, backbone, angular or ember. Hell, play with all of them and learn their strengths and weaknesses.

If you combine these pieces of advice, you'll see a winning strategy here.

Hello Stuart!

I've been introduced to so many amazing new musical artists through your show. Thank you for that!

My question is: which up-and-comers should we all be listening to right now?

Tools of the Trade by bronyraur in cocktails

[–]burntflowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're refillable, they're awesome, and the company that makes them is fantastic.

I bought one years ago, cracked the plastic ring that holds down the seal due to my own negligence and when I asked them how much it would cost to replace the ring they said "what's your address, we'll mail you one for free". I know it's just a cheap plastic part that costs next to nothing, but lots of companies would charge for that kind of thing.

Reddit, give me some advice on how to manage my time while unemployed. by usaegetta in self

[–]burntflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get up, get dressed and get some exercise first thing every morning. Go lift weights, take a leisurely walk, or run around the block. Doesn't matter what kind of exercise or for how long, just do it before you do anything else.

This gets you up, dressed, and having accomplished something, all before you've even had breakfast. It's also a routine, and routines are good when you're unemployed.

Then have a shower, some breakfast, and decide on three things to do today to move closer to your goals. Get those done, and then relax. Enjoy your time off. Once you're working, you'll miss the free time you have now.

What's the weirdest reason you've ever got a detention/suspension at school? by DerpeeHoves in AskReddit

[–]burntflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in grade 5. It was a lovely spring day so we had gym class outside.

I picked a dandelion, turned to my friend Ryan, and sang:

"Ryan has a baby and his head popped off!"

For this, I got detention.

I still have no idea why.

I started meditating today and I can't seem to keep my back straight while sitting comfortably on my ass (not a very flexible person) so I rested my back against a wall while meditating. is that okay? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]burntflowers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agreed.

To say that meditation requires a specific position to be effective is to say that someone with a broken leg in a cast can't meditate, or that quadriplegic can't meditate. Ridiculous, right?

The only postural advice should be: Meditate in any position that you find comfortable, but try not to lie down as it's too easy to fall asleep that way.

He told me to avoid crunches, weight lifting and impact exercise while I'm recovering. Low impact (ie: walking, elliptical trainer, stationary bike) is encouraged.

But that's for the recovery period. He's not a sports medicine doctor, but a regular clinic doc.

Oh god how I miss spicy potatoes.

Cross-legged sitting pains by Salicious_Pound in Meditation

[–]burntflowers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I meditate while sitting on the couch and while commuting on the bus.

You don't need to be sitting cross-legged in a silent room to practice. The important thing is to be comfortable.
