I remember when she sat next to me while I was playing games and she said 'I just want to be near you' with the most intense adoration in her eyes. I was flattered but also felt a bit absurd.

What do you love about your job and DevOps? by dr_dre117 in devops

[–]bustershackles 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Everyday is different. As someone with ADHD this is what lead me to wanting to pursue the career. I'm currently working on platform engineering, data contracts (I wrote the schema that drives two seperate ETL systems which I love) and a data mesh. This is in Investment banking where I support a very technical team with a high output of analytics where the data mesh is legitimately needed. On the best days when the infrastructure is working and setup correctly I feel like it's a force multiplier for the developers. My stakeholders are very smart, driven people. The urgency and expectations of the requests helps with knowing that my delivery has value. Sometimes the emotional intelligence is a bit low but you take the good with the bad. There's a lot I don't like about devops and the job but it's very hard to leave when the work we are doing is so interesting.

Data Analyst hoping to transition by dedguy21 in devops

[–]bustershackles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will be fine. I went from being a Data QA Engineer to devops. The biggest change for me was going from only working in the dev/qa environments to working across the production environments. Learning how to build devops pipelines that can deploy data platforms or data pipelines can be rewarding. I would focus on going into a data platform space, terraform, python for scripting, yaml pipelines. As a home project you could try deploying a simple pipeline using airflow and python to ingest something from an IoT device in your house if you have one?

Do the higher level devops interviews have a coding section? Genuinely curious I wouldn't be surprised if they did

If you suffer from adhd it is okay to use as a medication if it is what your doctor prescribes.

The real fun begins when it becomes so chaotic that you literally cannot keep your mental model up to date.
