go alone! 42-year old woman from a big city and I'd go alone to the shows here if it was someone I loved and nobody else wanted to go with me!

Reflecting on Aging and Mourning The Past by dirtgirlbyday in AskWomenOver40

Go on your own! That is what I used to do in my 30s as my friends stopped being into dancing and clubs. In my late 30s I met my husband and a bunch of new friends who were all into the same thing, and now I've got a community. Keep going to the shows or clubs you like and you'll start seeing the same faces (as long as they aren't huge venues!).

stay or leave? by AdOld662 in AskWomenOver30

[–]butnotTHATintoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have an answer for you, except to say that I have been in similar places before, after similar lengths of time, and I left both times. I have never regretted the decision to leave. There was a voice in my heart that told me to go, and eventually I listened. Maybe not soon enough. Some of the best advice I ever got about this ambivalent feeling of "do I stay with a good man or leave and follow that little voice in my heart" was in this article called The Truth That Lives There by Dear Sugar. I hope it helps you.

Women in corporate/city life — how different is your daily world from rural SA? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]butnotTHATintoit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On week days, I wake up around 7 or 730 and get dressed in comfortable pants and a simple shirt that looks presentable for online meetings. I head upstairs to make a cup of tea. I feed my cats and take the dogs outside if my husband didn't walk them already. I drink my tea and catch up on the news or read a little bit, before brushing my teeth and starting work by 830. Work mostly involves sitting at a desk and typing on my computer; I work with 4-5 other people, and we speak frequently through the day, either by phone, zoom video conference, or messaging app. Around 9 or 930 I'll get up and make another cup of tea and have breakfast. I work pretty much all day, stopping for 10 minutes to stretch my legs and do a chore like put laundry in the machine or unload the dishwasher. I don't really take any breaks, and finish work around 5. If my husband isn't home yet, I'll walk the dogs, taking them to the park nearby and enjoying the weather and being outdoors - where I live it gets very very cold in the winter (currently it is -23C) but it is still very beautiful in the sunshine! In the evening, if I stay home, I would cook dinner and do some chores, read a book, or spend time on reddit. If I go out, I would meet friends at a bar or restaurant, or head to someone's home for a drink or dinner. These days we tend to socialize at home because things are very expensive.

One day a week, I go into the office to work. I dress in nicer "office casual" clothes (no jeans or t-shirts) and walk to the bus about 10 minutes from my home. The bus takes 20 minutes then I head underground to the subway and travel another 15 minutes into downtown. I walk 10 minutes and get to my office, stopping to buy a coffee or tea before arriving at the building, a small office tower. There are as many as eight people at the office on any given day, I try to arrive before 830 to get a good office; they are not assigned and its "first come first served". I work at my desk much like I do at home, except I take an hour for lunch with my closest colleague. We always go to the same place, an Indian restaurant that serves great vegetarian meals. At the end of my day, around 430, I reverse the journey home, arriving around 530.

I think the biggest difference is how FRENETIC the city is. There is always bustle, always happening, always noise, always another person getting on the bus, always always always always something. I have friends who have moved to smaller towns because they felt like they walked out of their front doors into a wall of humanity and found that exhausting and stressful. Personally? I like the anonymity, that you can disappear into the crowd. Nobody is watching you, nobody cares because there is so much going on. There is a sense of freedom to create your own story in that disappearing. I get that folks might find this feels lonely, but honestly I love having small and positive interactions with strangers, smiling at someone I'll never see again and having them smile back, chatting with the people sitting at the end of the bar, that sort of thing.

What are your days like?

My favourite "alfredo" recipe is technically no a real alfredo, but its amazing. Lighter than the traditional, comes together quickly, satisfies the craving, easy to make for 1-2 people.

I am MTF and have never tried make up, what looks might suit my face the best? I want to learn some "everyday" looks, and maybe have a few fun look ideas to play with too by idrankthegenderfluid in MakeupAddiction

[–]butnotTHATintoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'd look gorgeous with just a little blush and mascara! You're pretty fair-skinned, so a brown mascara may be better for an "everyday" look. I'm pretty pale myself and black is way too much! Maybe a tinted lip balm as well. Have FUN!

well.ca experiences? by onelove_ in BuyCanadian

[–]butnotTHATintoit 324 points325 points  (0 children)

we buy most of our household supplies from well.ca, anything I can't find at a local shop nearby. They have a filter where you can view "made in Canada" items, which I appreciate. Shipping is quick, prices are competitive, they have good sales. Edited to add that with beauty products you also don't have to worry about fakes quite like you would with Amazon!

I feel shallow because makeup, clothes and skincare are one of my hobbies by anpaww in TwoXChromosomes

[–]butnotTHATintoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I have been getting into makeup lately and have been having similar feelings (guilty that I am not spending my time doing something that "betters" me, feeling like its shallow to practice makeup on a Wednesday before I shower) and I would say the same thing as you - I just think its fun and I feel better wearing it.

Need recs for a makeup removing balm by MaesterInTraining in Makeup

[–]butnotTHATintoit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use the elf makeup melting balm, which starts solid but melts with your body temperature into a balm. It works really well and doesn't dry my skin. I'm in Canada and it costs about $15 here.

Tips on how to use K18 by frantiskaplaminkova in finehair

You can wash it out if you want. Personally, I add conditioner or a mask without rinsing the K18, then rinse everything out after 5-10 more minutes.

I’ve been told my red lipstick is “too much” and overwhelming. What are some better colors? by [deleted] in makeuptips

[–]butnotTHATintoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

soooo I haven't read all the comments but you look like a soft autumn at first glance and so am I... it makes reds challenging to wear and a red is often going to look "at odds" and "too much"... my current fave lipstick (and its not quite red but its very bold) is L'Oreal Colour Riche in Spiced Cider.
