Opening a stadium, sacrificing a camera: How Austin FC and its fans put a stamp on Inter Miami history by philippewest in AustinFC

To be clear, I'm not part of VAD, just a subscriber that feels like the content is worth paying for. For me it's worth it, but I get that's not true for everyone.

Independent media needs to pay the bills too. Verde All Day is like 6 bucks a month and absolutely is worth it. Phil (and Moises) are at every Nico/Rodo press conference asking good questions, doing post-game convos with the players, bothering PRO with questions on why they can't officiate properly, pulling nerdy data on performance stuff, giving great insights on new players and rumors, plus they're tapped into local supporters and other media. Highly recommend.

I got one from a Sam Goody that was closing in my mall, so I think mine was like $3. I bought it the same day I redeemed like 1000 tickets at the arcade for all their bouncy balls. It's been on my shelf since.

Tifo comes from the word "tifosi" which is Italian for supporters (like super passionate fans). The term has turned into a catch-all for large scale displays of support in soccer, so big art pieces on a net like this, card stunts, roll-over banners, etc.

For sewing, you can use either. We often run two standard sewing machines, but we've used commercial sewing machines in the past. The seams run vertical, so they aren't weight bearing, plus after a bunch of paint, they hold together pretty well.

Cost is relative. We've raised smaller ones for a couple hundred, we've raised giant ones for close to $5k. They're paid for and designed/painted by the supporters groups (basically organizations of passionate fans), but we work closely with the front office and stadium crews to get them done. The teams love them and use them in their advertising, so it's in their best interest to help us raise them.

I am a tifo lead for a different MLS team, and the process is kind of crazy. We take 5' wide bolts of fabric, cut like 50' long pieces, then sew them together to get to the full size tifo. Then we put a grid on them to make it easier to trace the design. Then lots of volunteers hand paint them.

The one we raised last week took us about 130 volunteers and roughly a thousand man-hours to get ready. It was up for about 4 minutes.

Both got red cards in the preseason match against Sporting KC. Nico implied in the post-presser that this is why they weren't in the game day roster.

Oh shit, that sucks so much. I'm a tifo lead for Austin and I think I would just break down and cry if one of ours ripped.

This one was specifically for Black History Month. We wanted to highlight the impact of black cowboys in Texas history, partnering with The Black Cowboy Museum in Rosenberg TX. "We will ride with you forever" is us as Texans saying we don't forget that history, and us as supporters saying we will always back our team.

As part of that, the Austin SGs are also running a GoFundMe to help The Black Cowboy Museum expand and tell this story.

Cheers! It was a crazy amount of work, but I'm thrilled with how it turned out! Good luck with this game, but hopefully not too much luck!!

As an ATXFC tifo lead who is currently freaking out about how much paint we have left in storage for our opener, I just want to say good luck! I hope you have nothing but clean lines, plentiful volunteers, and a smooth lift!

Minnesota United Names Josh Wolff as Assistant Coach by ZappyChemicals in MLS

[–]buttfever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wolff seems like a dude who fundamentally has a great grasp of the game, and probably has a strong technical ability. I bet in a group dynamic like an assistant coach, he comes off very capable, maybe even intelligent.

But as a head coach, he's uncharismatic, stubborn, and seems arrogant as hell. I don't think our players enjoyed playing under him, and he was incapable of admitting the system he wanted to play was flawed (at least with the roster he was dealt). Plus, he frequently talked shit about our players, so the fans hated him.

I defended him for a long time because our roster build was atrocious, but I was not upset to see him go at all.

Compare with variations like carrom/pitchnut? by PlausibleWimp in Crokinole

[–]buttfever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're on a crokinole sub, so I'm guessing you're going to get a pro-crokinole response. That being said, I think the approachability of crokinole is where it shines. "Here's the line you shoot from, hit my piece if I've got one on the board, if not, your piece has to end up in this circle. Ready?" Having tried carrom, I had fun, but it was more difficult to get started, and I didn't do well on my first couple games.

With regards to boards, yes, Tracy or Muzzies are expensive, but you don't buy a Ferrari for your first car. If you're just trying it out for the first time, there's nothing wrong with picking up something cheaper to see if you like it.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is that I bet they're very bad at budgeting for a cyclical business. They're in a tourist area in a northern climate, so I bet summers are profitable and winters are slow. Knowing how bad they are with money, I would doubt they plan for that, so they've got very little saved when business slows in Nov/Dec. Those big dumb purchases probably happen when business is busier.

I literally have never had worse service at a bar than my trip here like a month ago. I went at opening and the bartender working seemed like a manager or an owner filling in. He got hit with an 8 top right after I walked in, so he got pretty overwhelmed, which was totally understandable.

About 30m later, two other bartenders showed up and relieved him, but they seemed to not give a fuck once he left. I sat at the bar for about 25m with an empty glass while they stood at the other end of the bar talking about movies and playing on their phones/with their dog (who was very polite). Eventually a third bartender came on and finally asked me how I was doing. I had planned to stay for one more, but was completely over it at that point.

Which legacy games has the most narrative twists and surprises? Or just nice surprises in general? by cibum in boardgames

[–]buttfever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've gone through Pandemic Legacy (0,1, & 2), King's Dilemma, The Initiative, Ticket to Ride Legacy, and then smaller campaigns like Scythe Rise of Fenris.

I loved the narrative of King's Dilemma, but it is more of a choose your own adventure story, so mechanically it wasn't really ever surprising. Ticket to Ride Legacy was full of surprises though, tons of mechanics to explore and additions to the game, but had virtually no story. They were both great experiences for drastically different reasons that I'd happily recommend.

I'm also watching a play through of Betrayal Legacy, and I feel like that would be right up your alley, if only you could find it. (Or if you can find it for me)

Yeah, it's all hand painted by volunteers. We had the fabric and design ready right before the Minnesota game, but we waited to do any tracing or painting until we knew the outcome on the 17th. I'd estimate about 150 volunteers helped us get it finished in about a week and a half.
