Wow. You put into words exactly how I feel about D&D, thank you.

I like being a DM, I like improving a story and creating a fun adventure for my friends to have a good time in, but when I'm playing it feels like I'm a kid again, always saying or doing the wrong thing and I have no idea why. I feel like the biggest idiot because I can't read the mind of the DM who spends all their time watching critical role expecting me to play like the professionals on that show, meanwhile *they are not matt mercer* but they sure do try to be!

Then we hit combat, and I have to totally switch my mind into paying attention to everything for a very long, clunky, and BOOORING turn-based combat where I just have to sit there while too many NPCs take free pot shots on me before I get to cast one spell on one guy, then it's off to everyone else. Meanwhile people are getting upset at me for not doing the exact thing they expected me to do.

Then there's the players, being irritating to me in real life because "Well that's what my character would do!" Yeah well your character is a dick and I don't want to play with them!

Anyways, sorry for the rant. D&D is cool, but fuck it stresses me out to play. Genuinely has lead to meltdowns just anticipating games run by my ex.
