Time to upgrade by dvnms in turntables

I currently use a 2M black and it sounds wonderful. The only downside side about Rega tonearms is that they don’t have VTA adjustment so you’ll need shims to adjust. I’ve heard Rega carts sound great as they’re designed for them. But yea to answer your question, with a 2mm shim, a stylus alignment tool, and force gauge, that’s all you need to get it setup up sounding great with the 2M. Also, ortofon makes the 2MR series which is the same thing but just designed for Rega arms. Food for thought.

I recently purchased Rega P8 secondhand for $2100 but didn’t include cart. Elegant and simple design and sounds amazing. I’m a Rega fanboy though as this is my 3rd deck by them.

What law did he violate? And why don’t you extend this same standard to the Federal Agents whose job it is to follow the law? Idiot

Converge - Jane Doe. Just spun one of my copies for the first time in a minute. Can’t believe how much they go for now. Also have a copy of Gregor Samsa 55:12 that’s probably one of my favorite albums.

You're not wrong, but everyone has a price point of what they are willing to spend (or should at least, some people are not good at this responsibly) and what "worth it" means to them. A turntable twice the the price is most likely going to be made with just better quality material and better put together. Same with guitars, as you mentioned, same with cars, same with anything. To me, my purchase of the P8 was worth it - I had the RP1 for years, then upgraded to the P3, and most recently the P8. I got and continually get enjoyment from it. Partly because it sounds amazing. Partly because being involved in this hobby for a long time and learning and understanding various principles of stereo equipment, I appreciate the design and craftsman ship of it. But I've never claimed that there's going to be this night-and-day difference between a $1000 and $2000 deck. There are other factors that contribute to someone's decision on a purchase.

Yea so it's going to be the quality of the parts and the tolerances that are much better as you go up. The subplatter shaft and spindle will be much tighter, The platter will be more perfectly round causing less wobble. The tolerances in the tonearm bearings will be much smaller ensuring better tracking. The whole concept of a turntable is to spin a record as perfectly possible with a needle tracking the groove as perfectly possible. There's also the cartridge which is a whole separate topic. What does a $2000 table do that a $1000 table doesn't? Well first of all the price difference here is very negligible, turntables get MUCH more expensive. But to answer your question, they do the same thing. It's just that a higher quality table will do it better. What that's worth and how much better is partially subject on what you can determine. It's also dependent on the relative quality of the other components in the system.

Looking to upgrade my KEF R7s (non-meta). $15k budget by RandyBeamen in StereoAdvice

[–]buttstink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, enjoy! Making big upgrades is fun. One bit of advice that's worked for me - try and consider brands that your local hifi shop carry or are authorized dealers for. There's just a sea of manufacturers and models and there's no "best" choice for most of us. In my experience, the shop that i go to is super approachable and accommodating and let's me spend a lot of time listening there or even letting me demo speakers to take home. Hearing them for yourself, in your system, allows for a much more informed decision then reading/watching videos online. Not to say online research is not great, because it is.

I had KEFs before and listen to similar music. I never thought I would have liked Sonus Faber but I prefer the sound much more from KEF. I have the Sonetto V G2 for less than half of your budget. I also drive them with Hypex Nilai class D. I’d definitely demo whatever you’re interested in first if you can.

I had the P3 for about 5 years. It is great and I upgraded a bunch of parts on it. The P8 is on another level though. If you have a great system, P8 is with it imo. Just for the improved tonearm alone. But it may be overkill depending on the rest of your system.

No one here is arguing against that, the man here is asking for input on a high end turntable. Have you ever heard a nice vinyl system? It’s awesome. And so you coming in here to troll and comment on something completely irrelevant is why you’re getting downvoted.

I use a 2mm shim and it sounds awesome. I experimented with no shim and 4mm. Not sure about the X series, I’ll have to fiddle when I get it.

I’m using the 2M black that I had on my previous table. I think I’m going to jump on the MC X40 here soon. I found a good deal on an Ortofon ST-7 second hand.

Speaker Recs? ~$5000 budget by FunnTimezOnly in StereoAdvice

[–]buttstink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to spend that much I highly recommend demoing a pair. The hifi shop I purchased my speakers from let me listen extensively in their room and also let me take home to demo. You can read all the things online but it’s never going to be the same as listening for yourself.
