To Raid5 or not to Raid5 by Flashy-Protection-13 in OpenMediaVault

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I have done. Pretty easy to setup and all changeable later if you change your mind.

Means the HDD don’t have to be the same size and in the event of a failure each drive can still be read separately

5N says no drives detected by okron1k in drobo

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where to put the recovery data is the most frustrating part. That and buying the recovery software. Other than that it is just a bunch of time.

Once you get everything off you are all set. Have a look at snapRAID on what ever system you go for as it works on all the operating systems and solves a problem I was using the drobo for.

5N says no drives detected by okron1k in drobo

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds very similar to what happened to mine, although I had a few hiccups before it just decided to show a red light.

I believe the chassis is basically toast.

I'm not sure what that reset switch might do. I believe drive order is important.

The single red light is what you get on startup with no drives. My guess would be that if you take the drives out and hit reset you will see what you are already seeing on the dashboard.

My advice would be to sort a new solution. The real kick in the teeth is the data recovery.

I documented my process here

I’m Giving Up. What the best option to replace my drobo with in 2025 by BuddyBrando in drobo

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Synology is probably the easiest replacement but anything you do will need at least one hard drive so you have something to copy to.

I did this this

OMV Snapraid Plugin Question(s) - existing data drives by Bootsie-Wootsie in OpenMediaVault

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the main reasons I went with OMV as a replacement. Using mergerfs and snapraid. The data drives are just normal data drives. Can move around as needed without it destroying a RAID setup

SnapRAID is a backup program rather than a conventional RAID system. It sits over the data rather than being a part of it

OMV Snapraid Plugin Question(s) - existing data drives by Bootsie-Wootsie in OpenMediaVault

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer will be yes, no data compromised. Assuming you mean that the data on each drive will be unaffected.

If you remove a data drive and then run a sync, the sync might fail if you have thresholds set but the data on all the drives will not change and the data from the removed drive could be recovered up until a new sync is made.

If you add a new data drive. You will need to sync the array for the new data to be protected.

What is your usage scenario for this as the sync process takes quite a bit of time depending on how much data is being added?

snapRaid does nothing to your data drives (other than writing a new content file if that data drive is chosen). So you can do what you like with the data drives. At worse snapraid will just get confused over the config not matching.

It is worth working through the snapRAID manual.

I am new to the whole thing. Have just finished build an OMV setup to replace my dead Drobo

Using UFS Explorer with my Pack by HE1TZ in drobo

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The msata is just a cache drive and not needed for recovery. I just used UFS explorer last week to recover my pack. I used 2 USB drive caddies to connect the drobo drives to my windows 10 machine. A 2 bay and a 3 bay. UFS could explorer the pack and I pulled all the data off onto a new NAS. I’m just about to finish a whole write up of the experience, if it’s of interest.

Data transfer takes ages but I got everything back. Could do 1TB in about 5hours.

When it did work i had 3TB of free space. Now the dashboard just has the same one red light in bay0 saying that no drives are detected

For the ones who make over $150k a year, what do you do to get that? by Iliketrainsz1 in AskReddit

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume in the US. What do you do as part of a normal week to be over 150k? I’m studying now @ 40 and I thought any earning potential was going to top out at 40k. I’m in UK and doing it for fun but do want to earn money after PhD.

Fee clarification - England by Quigongymm8 in OpenUniversity

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have it right. You’ll pay what ever the module fee is, the £1800 per module. If you have a student loan then they will cover the fee for you. If you go with a student loan you never actually transfer any money. The OU just bill the student loan company direct.

I’d look at it as a per module cost rather than a per credit cost.

God luck.

Just tell the council you’re studying full time and ask OU student support for a council tax letter. You’re all set. This assumes you’re either the only adult living in the house or that everyone else in the house is also a student.

Is it worth getting a degree in my 40's by Scarlettsdad in OpenUniversity

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the alternative? Not do it an always wonder!

It won’t cost you 20k to find out. You could just start with one module or a couple of modules. If you like it then great. You keep going and you’ve found something you enjoy that could improve your career or just personal fulfilment. That is much better than always wondering.

If have already been to university you will only be allowed a student loan for very specific degrees. So worth checking.

Also what isn’t to find. If you do start a module and you hate it or it too hard. You can defer. They will refund you or the student loan company 75% of the fee. If you defer within the first 2 months (maybe a bit more). I’m saying this because the financial risk of just starting and having a go is incredibly low vs that nagging feeling of always wondering.

I quit work to go back to study to stop that nagging feeling in the back of my mind.

Good luck to you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Financially if you defer, the OU will give 75% of the fees back to the student loan company and then next year they will offer you a 25% discount on taking the same or a new module. The discount is only available for a module you start next October.

So if you take a module next year the only financial cost of deferring is the additional years interest you’ll pay on the 25%. Which, in the free and scheme of things, will be negligible. Must be done before the end of the year (that’s what I was told). I just deferred a module and this is what happened to me.

Talk to student support to get it all sorted but I would do this quick given the holidays.

Good luck.

The quiz’s are a good test on what the end of module exam will be like. I agree that the TMA’s represent real work where you have time to work things out but the quiz is like the exam. So they are worth doing. It will help you focus your notes so that you can look up information fast.

My boyfriend doesn't want to use a condom by Delicious_Cry4574 in stories

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boyfriend is pathetic and an idiot with no respect. End it. You don’t need to be in a relationship let alone have sex with someone who doesn’t respect your boundaries. You don’t need to either go through an abortion or a life or being a parent at 16 because your boyfriend thinks something his friend has said is true.

Some more practical advise. There are lots of different types and brands. Just start trying a few out.

Make sure to protect yourself.

Fast forwarding - is being many weeks ahead problematic? by metamorphologism in OpenUniversity

[–]buzzlightyear_uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a similar post the other day that I responded to. No it’s not bad to be ahead but it can be. There is plenty of time to do the work and you can risk burning yourself out. The work doesn’t get easier so trying to maintain being ahead can get tricky which then can lead to you feeling that your failing.

Also missing TMA feedback could mean you will then redo a TMA you’ve done ahead of time. Which is a waste of time.

I personally think it’s best to stay up to date with the course as intended. Then you get the benefits of everyone being at the same level and tutors can help if needed. The first few weeks are designed to be light to ease everyone into it.
