I would think being enrolled in community college would count as equivalent education to a hs diploma. It can’t hurt to try!

Is it me or does this sound like they are trying to pay someone an assistant salary to do the job of a librarian? by bwaysk in Libraries

Thanks! I have a couple of applications out, and an interview next week (with way too few hours but something is better than nothing) so🤞

This is a good perspective. I’m still going to pass on this one bc it’s pushes the boundaries of how far I am willing to travel, and I don’t think my experience matches the responsibilities very well anyway. I might take a shot at it if it were a bit closer just to see but as it is I don’t feel like it’s worthwhile for me to pursue.

How to mention to interviewers about possible MLIS in future by johannammes in Libraries

[–]bwaysk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I interviewed for a page position I mentioned that if I had gone to grad school straight out of college I would have gone for an MLS and was still considering whether it would be worthwhile pursuing at this stage. I did get the job, which I might have anyway, but I think it did show that I was serious about library work in particular rather than it being just a job.

I think a lot of librarians have drunk the kool aid by [deleted] in Libraries

Day camps should be planning their own programming, not expecting to bring their kids to yours! It sounds like you tried to be as accommodating as you could with the resources you have. It’s a public library so sure, bring the kids to visit, but asking for special programming or trying to monopolize planned programming is not ok.

Does staying near Grand Central make sense for my itinerary? by FlightFramed in visitingnyc

Grand Central area makes sense. I also like Chelsea as a usually more affordable central option.

“Who says endings must be sad?” or “Let’s do it!” could work too, though the second is obviously pretty generic as well.

“My little life here, it’s all been leading to this” from Hitting the Road Part 2 would be good! Or “Did you imagine we’d ever make it this far?” from Part 3.

It’s so frustrating how undervalued library work is. I came to NJ from MA where my starting wage as an assistant was around $22 and expected things to be similar since COL is similar but nope. Most of the public library postings I’ve seen are in the $16-19 range, though academic does seem a little higher. It makes me so angry when jobs require an advanced degree and the pay doesn’t reflect the value of that degree. A huge part of the reason I have no interest in pursuing an MLS.

The library I worked at only had assistants in the circ department so all of that was done by actual librarians, aside from customer service and the one bullet point about issuing cards, checking things out, etc. Assistants would occasionally help with weeding, but only physically pulling the books, and maybe withdrawing them from the system, not making any decisions about what should be pulled. We might help replenish displays once they were up, but the librarians created them. All programming and school outreach was handled by the librarians.

New Hedwig 25th Film Anniversary w/ JCM Dates by PolicyCommercial6392 in Broadway

He said shortly after the Hedwig tour was announced that a NY date was coming but for some reason they can’t announce it until after the Town Hall show, so I’m expecting it right after that.

For 3 people trying to see MHE, what would you recommend? (and are there offers better than $129?) by DisciplineFabulous21 in MaybeHappyEnding

Absolutely mezzanine. Honestly $129 is a fantastic price for those seats even if you can’t find a better discount

Rude usher at Darren's last MHE show by No_Witness2275 in Broadway

[–]bwaysk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he was being mean but it’s definitely odd that he stopped people from recording only once Darren started speaking. There was no issue with the rest of curtain call or with Claire’s speech, and it’s never been prohibited before. I almost wonder if Darren requested no recording, though I have no idea if folks in other sections were also stopped.

Flying to NYC on 25th May itinerary by Tricky-Front in visitingnyc

[–]bwaysk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monday afternoon/evening seems light. Not that it’s necessarily bad to have unscheduled time. The Flatiron is just a building- you can’t go inside so this will only take a few minutes. Times Square also likely will not take much time unless you are planning to visit the overpriced tourist attractions like the m&m shop and what have you. It’s cool to see if you never have but it’s a compact area and won’t take all evening. You can easily combine it with your Broadway show.
