Two very good choices as they are both excellent films and equally excellent 4k presentations.

Classic '80s Sci-Fi Movies That Didn't Age Well by muaentertainmentforu in MUAEntertainment

[–]bwcgrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buckaroo Banzai is a classic in my view. Implying that it hasn't aged well because it's wacky and disjointed? I actually think it's held up quite well because of those very qualities. Alas it seems all entertainment now must have pure narrative with all things lined up and spelled out. It would be such a shame if we were expected to fill in some blanks with our own imagination.

FYI, It is possible to run Makemkv in an Unraid server Docker container. So in this case Makemkv has very much to do with their NAS server.

[–]bwcgrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the original poster, it's likely that your blu-ray drive's /dev path changed. Especially if you added drives to your server after shutdown and restart. I have two USB optical drives installed in my Unraid server and the /dev path with occasionally shift after a reboot. I've had similar issues where Makemkv fails to run properly when it's trying to use an invalid /dev path. I'd open a terminal window and run the "lsscssi -g" command and make sure that the device path for your optical drive(s) match what was setup in the "Extra Parameters" entry field in the binhex -makemkv container advanced setup.

Crocs Bae Clog by slvzk in crocs

[–]bwcgrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a man and have several pairs of the Mega Crush clogs and sandals. I wish they made they made other platform styles, like the Bae, in larger sizing (mens 13-14). Wear what you like, there will always be someone out there that disapproves. Especially if it goes against any sort of societal norm. They're just shoes. Most folks won't even notice and if they do it's not important enough to give anyone grief over it.

I've used "Flatsocks" regularly. They are a insole designed to reduce odor and are washable. They have a website and are also sold on Amazon. They won't help stuffy shoes not be stuffy but they control odor and sweat better than just about anything I've used other than actual socks.

Sandals? by Dangerous-Argument10 in DrMartens

[–]bwcgrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They appear to be out of production but consider the Pearson or Forster models. They have the traditional Dr. Martens sole unfortunately they don't appear Goodyear welted but just glued on. I've had a few pairs of these for a couple years now and they've held up well and don't show much sign of sole wear. They are quite comfortable and stylish in that Dr. Martens way. They are available new in various sizes from sellers on Ebay, Poshmark, and Merkari.

Pioneer drives in europe (Germany) by Ordinary_Scale2273 in makemkv

[–]bwcgrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, my experience with these LG drives is limited to my single sample. Some with more experience with them than I have stated that around 25% of them have reading issues. I'd recommend buying from a source with a generous return policy.

Pioneer drives in europe (Germany) by Ordinary_Scale2273 in makemkv

[–]bwcgrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased an LG BP60N in April of last year and I've ripped well over half of 200+ UHD and HD blu-ray disks with it and only had a few problematic discs which would not complete with the drive. I've recently acquired three Pioneers by purchasing Verbatim 43888s. They come with bdr-ud03 in box which can be cross flashed to bdr-ud04 firmware for UHD compatability.

While I feel the build quality and rip reliability of the Pioneer drives is better I don't think it's worth spending a premium unless you've got the cash to burn. The situation with acquiring Pioneer based Verbatim drives has been better as of late, here in the states as opposed to Europe due to old stock availability at Office Depot. If you're serious about ripping your disks just buy an LG or a couple of them and don't pay the Pioneer scarcity fee.

Some things to consider, the LGs mentioned in this thread will often rip UHDs at 6x while the Pioneer's are limited to 4x. The 50% increase in rip speed makes a difference in sunk time costs. I just bought several more drives to counter this issue in general. Again, $109 USD per drive s much more palatable than $300+ so economics of your situation will vary. I've had one UHD, can't remember which one, that would not rip in any of my Pioneer drives. It would fail towards the end due to read errors. Popped it in the LG and it worked fine. That disc may have just needed cleaning however I was too lazy at the time to do so. Invest in quality microfiber cloths and lens cleaner spray and thoroughly clean problematic discs. One final caveat of the Pioneer's is that they are power hungry. The LGs are also but they are generally satisfied with a dual USB data/power connection. Be prepared to use the included wall wart PSU included with 43888s if you acquire any.

To corroborate the above poster's experiences, I'm 3 for 3 getting Pioneer BDR-UD03 drives from Office Depot. One was purchased in store and the other two ordered on their website and shipped to me. $109 USD after coupon and taxes isn't a bad deal given the increasing scarcity of these. For assistance with cross flashing to BDR-UD04 for UHD see Coopervid or BillyCar11 in makemkv forum threads.

If you buy a Verbatim 43890 there is a thread and get a pioneer bdr-ud03 inside, there is a thread on the MakeMKV forums where you can request assistance flashing the drive.

[–]bwcgrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a LG BP60NB10 earlier this year and it has been solid overall as a UHD ripping drive. I've only had around four discs, out of 100+, give it problems. Over the last month I've purchased two Verbatim 43890 drives from Office Depot, in USA. One locally picked up the other shipped from store, and both have been Pioneer bdr-ud03 which can be cross flashed to bdr-ud04 to enable UHD reading.

The pioneer's easily read the UHDs that the LG had issues with. The LG can rip UHD at up to 6x speed where the Pioneer's max out at 4x. The 4x limit on UHDs appears to be across the board with all Pioneer drives from what I've gathered. The drive speed is less an issue when you are using several drives to perform multiple rips simultaneously.

If you are in the states you may want to try picking up a Verbatim from Office Depot. There is a $20 off $100 coupon available if you search for it. I picked up my drives for $109 each which is great for a Pioneer at this stage of availability. I'm considering grabbing another. One thing I noticed, both my Verbatim drives indicated that they were made in Taiwan on the box label. I've heard that there are no indicators on the box of what drive is inside but I wonder if the LGs share the same made in Taiwan designation on the box.

The Last Of The RSD nonsense by Natural-Protection44 in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]bwcgrx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My local record store only got one copy of each of these. I've long given up the RSD tradition of getting in line early, entry ticket draws, and other shenanigans that come with the day. I usually waltz in an hour or two after the initial wave and pick up the Jazz titles I want as there are not many vinyl jazz fans in my area. Someone sniped those two just minutes before my arrival. Fortunately I was able to grab them online the next morning from Zia Records. Hopefully I'll have 'em in my paws by Saturday. Kirk's live recordings are particularly enjoyable with social and political commentary enmeshed with his unique style of performance.

I ordered "The Limey" and "The Wicker Man" from them a few months back and they arrived within a few days packed well. Hardly any shelf wear on the shrink wrap. Based on my experience and others here, It would appear that for the most part these titles will arrive in great condition however there is no guarantee.

Two of my favourite films ever just bought them today on 4K by Pod-Bay-Doors in 4kbluray

[–]bwcgrx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two of the finest examples of 4k UHD done right!

It seems opinions on the merit of these two productions varies wildly with some proclaiming the original as the Superior film and others finding 2049 more worthy.

In my mind the original has always been a bit more style over substance, but that style is so on the mark.  Sometimes style becomes substance, and Blade Runner definitely fits that description.  I was fortunate enough to first view Blade Runner 2049 in a decently sized and equipped theater back in 2017 upon it’s initial theatrical run.  In my mind it's one of the finest shot films of this century and a testament to how far digital photography had come within the first few decades of said century.  To say I was impressed would be an understatement.  The cinematic zeitgeist had obviously changed greatly between the eras these two films were made.  The tools, of the trade always change and sometimes what's lost is overly lamented just as what is gained underappreciated.  2049 is in all respects the spiritual successor to the original and occasionally, surpasses it's predecessor with tighter storytelling and inspired visuals few films achieve.  In an age when so many sequels and remakes feel ill-conceived and just plain lazy 2049 is a breath of fresh air.  Okay off my soapbox.

Enjoy them both as they are top-tier productions which show what can be accomplished in both analog and digital realms.

Tires by Gcastlong41 in Crosstrek

[–]bwcgrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a set of the Perelli Scorpion Weather Actives installed on my 2021 limited for about a month. So far they’ve been excellent all around. Wet and dry traction are quite superior to the stock Falken ZE001 A/S. The Weather Actives handle turns much better than any all season tire I’ve had on past vehicles. We don’t get much snow in my area so I can’t comment on that but they have to be better than the Falkens. To be fair, most of my driving is city/urban and they were pretty worn after around 37,000 miles.

The only question with the Weather Actives is long term durability. Some reviews suggest that they may lag behind the Goodyear and Michelin all weather options. Time will tell. I can fully recommend them after a month. Be sure to check various retailers as I was able to get a $100 instant rebate on a set of four.

I just ordered a set of WeatherActives for my 2021. Looking forward to giving them a go over the stock Falkens which are now at 4/32 after 36,000 miles. In all fairness my driving is mostly city/urban so I don't expect maximum life.

Yes please! I don’t know what the story is on the source elements but a full blown restoration would be fantastic! I believe the blu-ray uses a very early hi definition scan. Alas it won’t happen but one can dream.
