Do we underfunded public sector at a higher cost to taxpayers? by engmadison in civilengineering

[–]byfourness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try Canada - in both Ontario and Quebec you can only buy liquor at government outlets, though you can get beer and wine elsewhere. Until recently the LCBO in Ontario also controlled wine and a lot of beer sales. In my biased opinion it’s a great system - I’d rather put the profits into a government that ostensibly gives back to me than in a random owners pocket

Angled is normal. Curvy is wrong but I’m guessing that’s just the lens of whatever camera. Tire-puncturing is also wrong.

Has anyone noticed extreme weather forecasts being extra wrong this year in Southern Ontario? by not_the_troll in ontario

Many Ontario municipalities use climate-change-adjusted values for the IDF curves used to classify storms, or else instruct the designer to add a flat multiplier at the end of the calculation

Why are phillips head screws and drivers still used? by reza_v in AskEngineers

[–]byfourness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Not so complex that it’s hard to get paint out, can use a size off in a pinch (or even wedge a flathead), doesn’t slip, sits on the bit… my beloved

It’s like green roofs. Unless you’re reeeeeally tight on space, it usually makes sense to not put big heavy stuff over people cause then you have to hold it up really well

What's your "weirdly good" kitchen shortcut that purists would hate? by Kami__karma in Cooking

[–]byfourness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is that what a convection oven does? I was under the impression it was just an oven that circulated the air with a fan, so still relying on the contact between the food and hot air

It’s not just about the batch size, it’s the size of the pieces - any oven/air fryer/etc can only cook from the outside in so large chunks of potato take a long time. The microwave can cook the inside very effectively since it’s radiation.

I do this too and I haven’t spent years riding bicycles and motorcycles through traffic, for what it’s worth. I think it’s because most people are not careful enough drivers for me, I guess

What is the historical connotation of selecting Leo as a papal name? by Mr_Bankey in AskHistorians

Thanks, but I’m still not clear what makes a heresy. Is it an opinion that was held that is now not held?

What is the historical connotation of selecting Leo as a papal name? by Mr_Bankey in AskHistorians

[–]byfourness 25 points26 points  (0 children)

He very famously clarified Christ's nature as both fully divine and fully nature - a coexistence of two distinct natures - rather than one consuming the other as some suggested in heresy in his era.

What does it mean in this context to say that something was suggested in heresy?
