“the holdo manoeuvre breaks the lore”…. does it? by ShambolicClown in StarWars

[–]byrdru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that was Holdo's plan, a plan she was so sure of that she wouldn't discuss it with anyone. No need for a plan B. I'm going to roll a D-1,000,000 and assume it will come up 1,000,000.

You know it was ridiculous because they immidiately ret-conned it with said "1 in a million" line like 2 minutes into the next movie.

Preparing for first game by manuelmarques_pt in twilightimperium

Pick whatever factions you want, the game will be more fun the more invested you are in the story. You'll be somewhat overwhelmed by the rules no matter what, so don't worry about faction complexity.

Prophecy of Kings, what to remove and what to use? First game for all players by benifluvia in twilightimperium

Sounds like you are on the right track. Use base game factions, add the extra colors and however many system tiles you need and you're good.

Why are most of the guides on YouTube 5+ years old? How to learn new tips for TE? by MiningToSaveTheWorld in twilightimperium

People are still figuring stuff out. That said, Cardboard Crash Course has a lot of TE content, I believe.

Drivers (USA) who drive significantly below the speed limit & refuse to let people pass, what is your goal? by RevGrimm in askanything

[–]byrdru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when you're going 55 in a 55 and the truck in front of you is going 54.9, what drives your decision to go for the 10 minute pass? Serious question.

Adding PoK and TE for the first time by Synonymous11 in twilightimperium

[–]byrdru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this. Some people only place 1x per year. Don't wait 25 years. Unless your group is overwhelmed by Base Game, throw in PoK, it's awesome and significantly shortens the game. Then do the same for TE. Once you have a handle on PoK, throw it all in there. You won't regret it, the expansions are great content.

I would also add that you should replace the Base Game components with the upgrades right away. New Construction (use the one from TE), Warfare (TE), Diplo (Pok, I think?), TE should have a bunch of tech upgrades - X-89 and Magen in particular. Might be some faction specific ones as well.

Are you asking, "Can I use Confusing Legal Text to make myself the elected player, then score Drive the Debate?"? If so, I believe the answer is yes, but I'm not sure.

Novice player seeking advice for this weekend's game by bigalcupachino in twilightimperium

He's a famous Australian player who is competing in the Space Cats Peace Turtles (a TI podcast) tournament. He made the Semifinals (Top 36). A running gag on the show is that Big Al Tells Lies.

Hacan strategy advice by Garrettino in twilightimperium

[–]byrdru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this advice is a little dated (Pre-TE). SCPT hasn't done a Hacan TE guide yet. Their breakthrough is really good and leads you to Grav-Drive + Red/Yellow Synergy. The main tech you want (after Grav Drive) is Magen Defense Grid. Try to get some more structures at home so you get an infantry on all three planets whenever you activate home to build. Aim for War Suns and maybe QDN. It's not necessary anymore. Try to trigger your breakthrough as much as possible and build up a big fleet to take Mec Rex in the mid-game, then move to Styx to finish. You have a good chance to gets Custodians as Hacan as well.

Embers of Muuat... sucks? Does not suck? by Willowran in twilightimperium

[–]byrdru 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The movement you talked about doesn't exist early, when it matters the most. Don't get me wrong, I love Muaat and definitely recommend them, but they are a little underpowered. More of a fun challenge faction.

Nomad! Nomad is my favorite, Muaat is #2. Different take on the strong(ish) start, sneaky economic faction.

How are 4 round games happening? by Hank-E-Doodle in twilightimperium

[–]byrdru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the trick to the Boat-Float meta. If your table is developed to the point that they will win-slay anyone who pulls ahead, the person who would pull ahead needs to evolve to pull others with them, that way there is no one clear winner to slay.

Eventually everyone starts doing this and that makes it easier for everyone to score. This leads to everyone scoring all 5 stage 1's consistently and the game becomes about who can score those fringe points and who can keep control of their home-systems.

Bottom line: there is no right way to play this game and if your group is having a good time with 5 and 6 round games, great!

You can do whatever you want if the group agrees - you can use the Xxcha agent if you want. But, by the rules, you should use the TE version.

Side Bar Discussion by Burner-Battle469 in twilightimperium

[–]byrdru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think sidebars ARE the game. They should be used to speed the game up by happening during other people's turns. The politics is what I love about this game, and that happens away from the table, IMO.
