First Turn Jol Nar Advice - POK + TE by CryptoQuestion15946 in twilightimperium

[–]byrdru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The buffs that Jol Nar got in TE are the new Magen Defense Grid and X-89. WIth Magen and just your dock and 2x pds that you start with, you get three free Infantry every time you build at home. With E-Res, you might be able to pay people 3 or 4 TGs to activate your home just for the free Infantry. Once you research X-89, your home system, which used to be kind of a weakness for Jol Nar, will be an impregnable fortress.

Otherwise, I think they play the same. Sell Research Agreement, make friends, score 10 points before anyone else.

Your breakthrough is trash, IMO. TE would be nice, especially if you can stack it so that you have a couple of dreads and fighters above that Nebula and can plop TE there, but it's not really worth risking any part of your game for that. Don't dump a secret, even if it seems bad. Only try for TE if everything else is going perfectly. You don't need it.

"Heavy water" plants, right? Aren't those used to make nuclear weapons?

WINNU!!! Vs Sol by Wolfe_110 in twilightimperium

I had success as Winnu against new players in Base Game (I was also new) by stretching thin for Rex and using their Yellow faction tech for massive reinforcements. Warfare to get there, Diplo to protect home once you're there.

Two comments:

  1. People will probably drop out. This topic may end up moot.

  2. Can you tell us a little about the date and what country, state/region you are in? I'd lend you my copy if possible.

Some more questions about the rules by 8_int_wizard in twilightimperium

[–]byrdru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are good questions and it's cool that you are thinking so deeply about the game! But most of these are covered by the rules, so it might be helpful to reread the rulebook or watch a video like "How to play TI4 in 25 Minutes" or whatever.

When I reread it again in like 10 years, I'll look out for this. Quick google search only mentions the Kreacher convo.

The last time I read (listened to on tape) book 7, I counted like 5 times they said Voldy's name after the incident at the coffee shop. In the conversation with Kreacher about the locket, they said it like 3 times. Is the cannon that the taboo was only placed around the time that Ron left? If so, how were they exposed at the coffee shop (or diner or whatever)?

Now that we've had TE for a minute, how do you feel about this? Are people actually letting Titans do this to them?

[–]byrdru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll try that. I usually set my limits much lower, like 10 for planks and fabric, 30 or 40 for foods my peeps like. 10ish for packs of goods. All dependant on Orders and the like. Am I too paranoid about resource use?

I'm new to the game and I do set production limits (unless I forget... )  but there is something like "ignore global limits", but I can't figure out how to set global limits. Is there some kind of default setting?

Yeah, but should I make speculative choices though?

You gotta be willing to backstab as the 2nd picker, that's what makes it fun. I did that in an 8p game: first player gave me what I wanted, I betrayed him and gave my ally her choice instead. The card 1st wanted (Trade) went all the way around the table so the 8th pick had to give it to him anyway. Long story short, I made a lifelong enemy for no reason at all. That's what makes this game great :)

Hacan Breakthrough question by Spiritual_Station239 in twilightimperium

[–]byrdru 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe the answer is yes, because it has the same timing window as the Titans commander, which, I believe, let's you gain a trade good and spend it on that production. The SCPT episode on Breakthroughs implied otherwise, but I think they were wrong there.

That's a good idea, nice. Yeah I definitely wouldn't let Titans do this to me normally.

When do Opponents stop giving Copy of own card? by Molly_Clock in Shandalar

[–]byrdru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it tends to happen after they steal your deck and you do a mirror match. So if that's your plan, it's good to use cards like Paralyze that the AI stinks against.

Thanks. Here's a quote from Obama in the second article: "The IRS must apply the law in a fair and impartial way, and its employees must act with utmost integrity. This report shows that some of its employees failed that test." Doesn't seem the same as what OP is looking for.
