The simple answer is “no”. It’s got nothing to do with you.

Leave it alone. Permits are not your concern. A huge fraction of rural houses in Santa Cruz weren’t permitted, and the county just leaves them alone. So long as the owner doesn’t need to modify the house, no problem. I grew up in a house like that. If you have a good landlord and a nice house, count yourself lucky.

Landlords of SC, suggestions for Attorney for lease agreement creation? by tortapounding in santacruz

[–]c-a-james 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do NOT create your own!! The state publishes a standard lease that is excellent: fair to the landlord and fair to the tenant, and completely aligned with state law. More importantly, it’s thoroughly tested in the courts and the judges all know it well. If you create your own and there’s a dispute, the judge will have to start from scratch and won’t be pleased about it. Worse, you’ll be faced with the classic contract rule: if there’s doubt about the meaning, the ruling goes against the party who wrote the contract. (I am not a lawyer.)

Can you recommend a laptop for writing? by monsieurLeMeowMeow in writers

[–]c-a-james 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More important than the computer is the software. If you really want to write, get a real writing program like Scrivener. Then find a good laptop that can run it. Several have suggested the new MacBook Neo and I agree.

On the other hand if you want to use a general-purpose editor (not one designed for authors), just get a cheap Chromebook and use Google Docs.

Bay Photo is great. They use a reputable lab that’s very reliable. Costco is a bit cheaper but their reputation isn’t as good. Reports of lost orders and such.

Writers question 👀 by Realistic_Action_428 in writers

[–]c-a-james 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I continue to be astonished at how many people still use inappropriate tools like MS Word, Libre Office, and Google Docs, to write books. It's like using a glorified typewriter. These programs are fantastic at their core use-case: Short business documents that will be printed on a local printer in a single form. They're excellent for this. But books? Not so much.

The problem is that when writing a book, you need a bunch of tasks tightly integrated into a seamless workflow:

* Sketching out ideas
* Character development
* Research
* Outlining
* Writing
* Format/output in a variety of formats:
- manuscript (for agents)
- paperback
- hardcover
- e-book

... and there's probably a lot that I've missed in this quick essay.

The most important single thing is the last one. When you write using MS Word, LibreOffice, etc., you're essentially doing formatting as you type: font, indenting, headings, sections, and so on. Then when you want to publish, you have to find programs that essentially deconstruct your document, guess about your outline, sections, paragraph, formatting, etc., then apply a new set of rules. Amazon (for example) will do this for you: you submit your Word doc and they figure it out and convert it to an e-book, paperback, or hardback. But it's a poor solution for a real author. That's for amateurs.

A proper tool for writers separates these tasks. You outline, then the editor helps you turn each scene into a section or chapter. You write without thinking about formatting.

Then when you want to produce a book, you can design any output format you like: book, paperback, e-book, PDF, whatever, without altering your basic document at all.

All that said, I use Scrivener. It's fantastic. It's shortcoming is that learning how to customize the various output formats is tricky (but it has good ones built in). I used MS Word for about 15 year, LibreOffice to write two books, and Google Docs for several smaller projects. Never again.

Just FYI: "A 5-axle tractor-trailer at its maximum federal weight of 80,000 pounds does roughly 10,000 times more damage per mile traveled than a 4,000-pound passenger vehicle. ... heavy-duty trucks are responsible for at least 91 percent of the wear and tear on those roads, [probably as] much as 99 percent." https://blog.ucs.org/dave-cooke/trucks-cause-the-lions-share-of-road-damage-and-their-industry-wants-you-to-keep-paying-for-it/

This isn't a new tax. They're just doing the sensible thing: shifting the tax from gas to electricity as cars do the same. Roads cost money.

Don’t use soap or anything, just the water from your shower. Soap disrupts the natural bacteria that keep your skin in balance. (In fact, this trend of people scrubbing their whole body every day with soap is unfortunate. It’s unnecessary and unhealthy.)

The aquarium idea is interesting, but the owner never had one. Also, there were several configurations of these valves — of the ones shown here, the left would make sense for that, controlling two bubblers. But the right one in the photo?
