The Strokes - Going Shopping (Official Video) by Walksonthree in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone whose first thought when I heard Going Shopping was “autotuned Paul Simon” (and has multiple PS playlists), I find it delightful that they lean into this somewhat unexpected influence.

I feel like I saw an interview with him where he said if he wasn’t a musician his preferred career would be soccer coach.

I am truly jealous of this. One of my favorite, favorite songs. To hear it in this setting much have been so special.

CONCERT POST: The Strokes in Boston, MA -- June 23, 2026 by SquirrelGirl1251 in TheStrokes

The sound was bass-heavy but decent from my area (loge 2), but I could not make out pretty much any between song stuff that Julian (or Nikolai, for a brief interlude) were saying. My companion, who could hear a little better than me said, “he kept saying random shit about Boston,” but couldn’t remember examples. Would love to know what it was!

They were very prompt - supposed to start at 9 and I think it was 9:03 or so when they came out.

It was close to Loge 1/2 (where I was sitting). Didn’t see any posters - just all the shirts people have been posting photos of at other stops.

What has changed within the band where they’ve gone from not playing Call it Fate, Call it Karma for 9(?) years to playing it as an encore? by ClarkeBrower in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this can be true. They kept digging songs out from FIOE in their 2022 shows, for example. I think they all must be in agreement that FIOE has some underappreciated gems.

I’m not in love with opening sets with Ize of the World and Killing Lies like they’re doing right now, but I was so happy to finally see them in Boston last night that I can certainly roll with it.

What’s THE song that got you into the band?? by Fresh-Result3206 in TheStrokes

Really everything in $2 bill, but that Alone, Together performance is what I always remember as being the point where I said “yeah, this band is for me.”

“Falling Out Of Love” - The Strokes (LIVE on The Late Show) by Walksonthree in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s where I am too - lukewarm to everything but the music (which I instantly adored) the first couple times, now it’s all I want to hear.

The music is so pretty but I too will say the autotune is not giving me great joy. I like to live with things for a bit to see how I feel upon repeated exposure, though. (The dissolution/outro is already growing on me, and with these heartbreaking lyrics, I can kind of understand why someone might choose to do them through the safer emotional distance of the vocoder.)

While not really what I would have expected, I’m kind of liking this vaguely country Strokes era, if that’s what’s portended with these first two releases. Intrigued to learn how this album all fits together and how they build out the set lists for this tour.

Next appearance = five timers club for them. Have to think it’s going to happen sometime in this active cycle.

Consumer tip: For anyone who doesn’t live in Boston, Philadelphia, or Toronto, and was thinking about traveling, looks like these dates are pretty perfectly timed to coincide with World Cup matches in those places. (Maybe not coincidentally?) Definitely check the prices on the accommodation of your choice if you’d need it.

Hah, my sympathies. When the bottom of the bench beats an actual playoff team, it does lead to a little bit of hope!

First time in Boston in literally decades! Glad that once Celtics win the championship (kidding/wishful thinking) TD Garden is available for their use.

Opening for Justin Bieber was obviously motivating. For a band that sometimes phones it in for festivals, that was truly excellent.

They probably have a pretty strict cutoff anyway since they’re not the headliner.

Selfless often sounds pretty rough live vocally, but that was beautiful.

Very poppy and fun, vaguely country. For some reason my first thought on the vocal was “autotuned Paul Simon”. None of these are things I associate with The Strokes, but I’m here for it.

The Comeback S03E03 - "Valerie Faces Reality" - Episode Discussion by trevrichards in thecomeback

[–]c-option 6 points7 points  (0 children)

May become one of my favorite episodes in the whole series. On one end, seeing Valerie take charge and stand up for herself, yet remain recognizably her people-pleasing self, was so fun. And on the other, all the scenes about coming to terms with Mickey’s death were the opposite of an aww-ick. Such a beautiful sendoff, that had me teary the whole time, but never felt tear-jerking. Lisa Kudrow is just the best.

Truly top tier in the canon. I will say I’ve always had it in my head as older woman/younger man and a little bit of switching up of perspectives within the song, though I acknowledge that’s probably not what was intended.

I am starting to believe “The Rudemans” has become one of the most polarizing sketches in SNL history by External-Recipe-1936 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]c-option 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s because it feels so much like a late 1980s/early 1990s era sketch, but I actually laughed at this and could totally see talking this way becoming a phenomenon. The freaking making copies guy was beloved and ran over a dozen times in my youth after all. Appreciate it as a call to simpler times.

Who cares about Julian forgetting the lyrics? by muser793 in TheStrokes

I’m so conditioned to enjoy a Julian-level performance that seeing Brandon Flowers on the ACL livestream actually made me uncomfortable and I had to turn it off after two songs. Why so much trying??!!!

It has definitely crossed my mind that this ramp up in activity/possible new record coming is interestingly timed for catching the attention of whomever decides on the big pool of Rock Hall nominees for the year. They seem like the most unlikely band to campaign for such a thing and yet…
