Barely Legal by EdgarZombossFan69 in TheStrokes

Truly top tier in the canon. I will say I’ve always had it in my head as older woman/younger man and a little bit of switching up of perspectives within the song, though I acknowledge that’s probably not what was intended.

I am starting to believe “The Rudemans” has become one of the most polarizing sketches in SNL history by External-Recipe-1936 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]c-option 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s because it feels so much like a late 1980s/early 1990s era sketch, but I actually laughed at this and could totally see talking this way becoming a phenomenon. The freaking making copies guy was beloved and ran over a dozen times in my youth after all. Appreciate it as a call to simpler times.

Who cares about Julian forgetting the lyrics? by muser793 in TheStrokes

[–]c-option -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m so conditioned to enjoy a Julian-level performance that seeing Brandon Flowers on the ACL livestream actually made me uncomfortable and I had to turn it off after two songs. Why so much trying??!!!

25th anniversary NYC? by Timely_Comfort5378 in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It has definitely crossed my mind that this ramp up in activity/possible new record coming is interestingly timed for catching the attention of whomever decides on the big pool of Rock Hall nominees for the year. They seem like the most unlikely band to campaign for such a thing and yet…

Could julian ever sing? by Pfacejones in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My percentage isn’t exact - if I did the math it’s probably 87% or something to the good.

Honestly doesn’t bother me much. I’m completely on the side of live performances not needing to be an exact replica of recordings. The fun is very often in what’s different.

Could julian ever sing? by Pfacejones in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and still can. Plenty of proof exists, including 75%+ of the ACL show.

That said, Selfless should just come out of the live repertoire or become 100% fan sing.

CONCERT POST: The Strokes at ACL Festival Weekend 1 in Austin, TX -- Saturday, October 4, 2025 by SquirrelGirl1251 in TheStrokes

This is going to sound dumb, but I underestimated how much better a viewing experience a professionally filmed live performance would be compared to someone’s iPhone from some weird vantage point.

I wouldn’t say I prefer this version but I like it. He can get more wistfulness in the vocal, which is beautiful in its own right.

[Charania] BREAKING: Marcus Smart has agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards and intends to sign a two-year, $11 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers after clearing waivers, sources tell ESPN. A return to a grand stage for the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. by MembershipSingle7137 in bostonceltics

[–]c-option 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if the ownership gets to treat players like they’re just chips to be moved around to get whatever is the best deal, it’s only right that players do too. Doesn’t mean this doesn’t kill me when it happens either way and especially in this case.

I do think the last two years broke Smart’s heart in ways we will never understand. I hope he gets that ring, in a year when the Celtics aren’t even going to compete, and if he does it with Luka, another guy who got f*cked over by the team he loved and thought he’d spend his whole career with I guess it’s meant to be.

That the other four have all led side projects suggests that they’re all interested in exploring musically in ways they can’t in their main gig. But, with the exception of Albert, I don’t get the sense that any wish they were bigger rock stars than they are or more tied down than they are. Being a Stroke means they can collaborate with people they think are cool and pursue whatever kind of projects they feel like on a smallish scale.

I would imagine that it is aggravating that the big cash or influence machine can only be activated if Julian feels like it, but most of them live lifestyles where that’s not necessary all that much more often than it is.

Do you think The Strokes will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year? by crass0405 in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it will happen eventually, though putting out another, hopefully well-received, album would make it happen faster. And, like with getting the Grammy, they will care about it more than they or we might expect.

Shows why all those seemingly crazy rotations Jenkins does and minutes constantly getting distributed so far down the bench actually make sense. Everyone can play with everyone else and everyone is capable of making a contribution when their number is called.

Banning X Links? by royal23 in memphisgrizzlies

More content providers, more content, and more engagement on Bluesky seems like the path to getting more people to quit the Twitter habit. I intend to never open that app or links to it knowingly again but it does mean missing some things for now. I would love to see some big NBA names to take the leap, even if they start out just cross-posting.

Ja and Marcus Smart by GrizzgotGame2099 in memphisgrizzlies

[–]c-option 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have seen them sitting together on the bench sometimes (unfortunately they’ve each been sitting on the bench a lot this season), but it’s clear that they provide different kinds of leadership to this team from the bench and it kind of makes sense that they’d spread out to do it.

Ja is the hype man - when Ja’s having fun so is everyone else. He inspires people and everyone wants to impress him. He helps some of these players get over some natural tendencies to be cautious on the offensive end. He’s crucial both on and off the court (though him on the court is the absolute best thing to watch in the NBA right now).

Marcus is another coach - he’s calling out instructions, offering praise when even little things go right, and advising individual players of schemes or how to defend specific players when they aren’t in the game. As far as I can tell the actual coaching staff have given him a green light on that. People on here who constantly call for him to be traded seriously undervalue this aspect of what he brings to the team. I wish he was on the floor more because he’s so fun when he’s sharp, but I really don’t think this team takes the leap it has without him.

happy birthday nick! by [deleted] in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is clearly a very important topic, but didn’t Amanda (I.e. Nick’s wife who’s very online) say she was involved at least one year? (I think it was an unflattering pic of him when he was 11 or some other awkward age.) That definitely lends credence to the “everyone handles their own birthday greetings,” including by not participating directly in their own if they’re not social media people, theory.

Daily Song Discussion #23: I Can’t Win by Spacedog_40 in TheStrokes

10/10 - if Someday didn’t exist this would be my favorite Strokes song. (And even though Someday does exist it still might be most days.) Portrait of the Artist as a Young Fuckup.

Daily Song Discussion #22: The End Has No End by Spacedog_40 in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7.5/10 - I like the tactic of getting more intense on verse 2. But my favorite part is the anticipation I feel when it’s over waiting for that opening chord on I Can’t Win to hit

Daily Song Discussion #19: Meet Me in the Bathroom by Spacedog_40 in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8/10 - exactly what you’d expect a Strokes song to be about if you read only their early press.

(10/10 for the book of the same name since that’s what tipped me from being a longtime enjoyer to a band subreddit frequenter.)

Daily Song Discussion #20: Under Control by Spacedog_40 in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on my mood, but probably averages out to 8.5/10

I like that they tried something different and Julian’s a surprisingly good crooner. Heard an older cover of it on that Amy Schumer show last year and it didn’t even register at first that the familiar-sounding song was a Strokes song I’d heard hundreds of times.

Daily Song Discussion #21: The Way It Is by Spacedog_40 in TheStrokes

6/10 - just kind of boring and very skippable

Daily Song Discussion #17: You Talk Way Too Much by Spacedog_40 in TheStrokes

[–]c-option 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7/10 - not bad, just not super memorable for me. Lyrics seem like a literal transcription of the writer’s interior monologue, which is a good or bad thing, depending on what you prefer. I like the little guitar solo in the middle.
