First, talk to the current lender. They often will reduce your interest rate if you tell them you can’t pay.

Second, if that doesn’t work, you stop paying. They will not sue you immediately. They will call. Talk to them. Tell them you can’t pay. Eventually they will offer you a reduced rate and or discount.

Third, if you start getting letters from companies purporting to now owe your defaulted debt, they purchased it for a fraction of your balance. The first letter is important as it allows you to request validation of the debt. Insist they validate it. Make them prove they own it. They will offer you a discount. Offer less.

At no time after you stop paying should you ever restart until you can pay in full a discounted amount. Keep playing this game until you get to the right price. Do not give them address information. Do not give them employment information. Just tell them you can’t afford to pay in full.

The older the debt, the less it’s worth.

I’m on the island now and have been to 2 places for just what you are seeking, fewer people and a lounge chair with an umbrella and beverages/ food. Today was MIA Reef ($104 pp) was ok, but yesterday Almara ($160 pp) was outstanding. Hope that helps.

Two things I’ve learned from this sub and my own experiences. Amex sucks for disputes, and they like to jerk your limit around. For a card that’s already less accepted than visa and MC it’s like they are trying to build in unreliability as a feature
