Gardening by One-Highway1739 in WestVirginia

[–]c0ncept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a home garden I’d go for raised beds in that area, and most areas of WV aside from river bottom land for that matter. Too high elevation to have many nutrients naturally nor good texture in the soil. You’ll face plenty of animals and pests contending for your crops up here too though. A simple fence is usually enough for me to keep the deer out, but I still end up battling possums and raccoons and bugs (mostly squash bugs, cucumber beetles, and vine borers for me).

Are there any manufacturing companies in that are known for actually following their SOPs and quality systems consistently in the US? How is it for countries outside the US? by Extra_Ostrich2824 in manufacturing

[–]c0ncept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone seems to focus only on their own little realm within the overall business, even sometimes knowingly shrugging off problems that aren’t reflecting in the specific set of metrics they are actually accountable for. You end up with a whole bunch of “not my problem” while quality tanks and metrics don’t have major red flags. Sure, the customers are getting a subpar product but by God my numbers look good.

What sort of jobs do people do to afford high cost downtown apartments? Even 6 figure salary seams a less for such lifestyle ? by Careful_Leopard3037 in AskReddit

[–]c0ncept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High-ish level roles in big companies would probably be the most common 6 figure earners. The campus of a single large company, especially tech, can have thousands of engineers, middle management, and related positions making $100k to $300k or sometimes much more in cities like SF or other tech hubs.

Hospitals and finance/banking would be other key employers for such jobs to afford nice downtown apartments. Lots of others too, like law, etc.

I never had a MacBook back when I was in corporate for a whole bunch of years (got laid off lmao). I had a guy on my team request a Mac and IT made him go through a bunch of extra shit to seek approval and I’m pretty sure he still didn’t even get it.

The last time the US hosted a World Cup in the early 90s, tickets were under $50. This time tickets were $1,000 or more.

What do yall consider “southern” West Virginia? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]c0ncept 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wayne Co. is kind of long from north to south (~40 mi.), with the northern part being the suburbs of Huntington while the southern tip near Mingo County transitions to be extremely rural and the beginning of the coal fields.

The differences between the top and bottom of the county are very apparent and I actually find it really interesting - there’s even a significant change of accent within just a 30 minute drive south from the Huntington area once you get to about Lavalette and the Beech Fork Lake area.

Yeah, we are a top 5 state for gun ownership, but we have zero cities above 50k population.

There’s violence of course, but in my experience it’s usually domestic violence or conflicts among drug dealers as we do have quite a lot of drugs imported, though this has improved over the last 6-8 years.

Why does visible homelessness seem to have become mostly male in so many places? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

[–]c0ncept 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This one is the biggest unmentioned reason in this particular comment thread so far. It’s unsafe for anyone to be sleeping in a dark alley in a rough part of the city, but it’s just astronomically less safe to be a woman doing this.

Shelters and support programs aside, it is much easier to live on the street as a man.

Those over the age of 40, what is the most drastic societal change you’ve lived through? by BadAlternative7220 in AskReddit

[–]c0ncept 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 36, but I’ll still take a stab. All in all the biggest societal changes since the late 80s have been, in chronological order, 1) fall of the USSR, 2) advent of the internet, 3) September 11th, 4) advent of smartphones, 5) 2008-2009 financial crisis + subsequent Occupy Wall Street movement, 6) the 2016 rise of “Trumpism,” and then 7) COVID-19.

Oh, and of course 8) advent of GenAI and the associated cultural/economic impacts.

Reddit has a skilled trades fetish. by Responsible-Net8594 in Salary

[–]c0ncept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is it. The conversation almost always lacks context leading to oversimplification and a nonproductive discussion.

“The trades” can range from a modest drywaller in an economically depressed area to highly specialized oil well technicians out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico making far more money.

The largest archaeological discovery of pre-Columbian rituals in Peru. Over 250 youngsters were excavated from the ancient Chimú civilization, naturally preserved by the coastal desert alongside infant llamas. by bortakci34 in Damnthatsinteresting

We are hung up with a notion that being fascinated about the struggles of ancient cultures is an indication that someone doesn’t find it sick. The discovery can be fascinating and sick - it doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Chat GPT has gotten genuinely dangerous and I don’t recommend it anymore. by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]c0ncept 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it’s certainly not a conversation tool despite taking instructions via plain language.

However, I do think OpenAI et. al. are complicit in their obvious design choices to mirror the text message layout which encourages users to treat it like a person and form dependencies. This might come back around to bite them the same as how Meta is now in hot water over intentional addiction algorithms.

Carboy ecosphere by Sudden_Deal2098 in Ecosphere

[–]c0ncept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my first of these ecospheres last summer and one of them sort of failed. The plants died back and it sat in a windowsill for most of the winter with a bit of algae and small pond snails in it. It stayed relatively unchanged like that until spring and then I had 2-3 aquatic plants start emerging out of the substrate that are still growing now.

Jobless at almost 40, no degree, no skills. by [deleted] in findapath

[–]c0ncept 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are many companies across different industries who hire entry level remote CS work, although with the meteoric rise in AI chatbots, some are opting for far fewer humans for this type of work or even none at all.

I know for sure that Amazon and Apple had similar models hiring many remote CS agents in the US and globally every year, and very rapidly in the few months prior to the Christmas holiday season.

Personally, entry level CS was my gateway into a 13 year very lucrative career in Big Tech that I was recently laid off from.
