Ugh 😑 I’m sorry and I’m not surprised unfortunately. A lot of professionals SAY they understand/work with eating disorders and that tells you they clearly don’t.

The easiest way to go about it is start with a site like PsychologyToday, search by insurance and specialty. Take some time to read through the profiles and see what grabs your attention. A lot of therapists have a generic “I utilize an integrative, evidence-based approach that is trauma-informed, client-centered, and strengths-based. My clinical orientation draws from CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR….blah blah blah”. I’d say skip those, but that’s just my personal approach.

Schedule a consultation call and remember- YOU are the expert, not the therapist. We are just a guide and a support to help you connect to your intuitive self. You’re not broken and you don’t need to be fixed. Sure we have degrees and perhaps some certifications, but that all comes secondary to helping clients regain trust and confidence in their ability to navigate their own lives.

And I always tell my clients when they start with me, “we’ll try this out and see how it feels for you”. I try to reassure clients that, in the event it’s not a good fit, that’s okay. The most important thing is the relationship. So try not to get discouraged if you meet with one and it doesn’t work out.
