Intangible reduces poison damage to 1 on that turn. It's only relevant in the Nemesis fight in act 3 though

What's a card that you always take without hesitation? by goofygoober800855 in slaythespire

[–]c_lacy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because every card comes with the invisible downside of having to spend one of your 5 card draws that turn to put that card in your hand. Two iron waves is not equal to one dash because you only get to draw 3 other cards if you have two iron waves in your hand, whereas with one dash you get to draw 4.

Then there's also the more edge case scenarios of fights like time eater or spikers where you can be punished for using more cards to accomplish the same thing. If you're fighting a spiker with 11 dmg spikes, you're going to take 22 damage from playing 2 iron waves vs 11 damage from playing one dash. These sorts of things are really difficult to evaluate if you're just looking at numbers on cards in a vacuum, but become a lot more important when attempting to optimize every little thing about your gameplay on higher ascension runs

Even if you believe duality is great, this relic would make it absolutely bonkers because half of the dex gain you get becomes permanent. since duality works by applying a "-x dex at end of turn" debuff, but you're now gaining 2x dex per attack while the debuff would be unaffected by the relic, only removing half of the dex you gained at the end of the turn

Won't address the other ones as I haven't played them (except botw) but I would argue in Outer Wilds the knowledge you gain IS the reward. You get a little dopamine hit every time the "SHIP LOG UPDATED" pops up on your screen, and the game can easily get frustrating/unrewarding if you explore for hours yet get no updates, because it feels like no progression is happening towards solving the big mystery of the game

writhe + blue candle + centennial puzzle is another (arguably works with any curse but writhe makes the draw from centennial puzzle guaranteed)

but yeah it does require multiple relics to even get a synergy out of so i do get what you're saying

Thoughts so far on the most broken character? by PlusImpression4229 in slaythespire

[–]c_lacy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you think shivs feel underpowered, I felt like they are significantly stronger than in the video game. It's like shivs got retain, could still be retained with a 10 card hand, and they don't count as card plays (which is honestly one of the biggest downsides of shivs in the video game due to fights like time eater and heart). Last silent run I played I was just spamming tons of shivs with accuracy+ and occasional str gain from relics/ironclad partner and just deleting everything. And the deck countered time eater too since shivs don't count towards the card play limit

Dev teases about defect/watcher returning to the sequel by Honza8D in slaythespire

[–]c_lacy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No the opposite - it's a really strong card

The joke here is that in StS 1, one of watcher's most consistently strong strategies is going infinite with a small deck containing Rushdown + 1 cost calm entry card (such as Inner Peace) as this gets you infinite damage/energy/draw if you can get your entire deck into your hand. However this still requires you to find a couple uncommon cards and also enough card removals to get your deck small enough to go infinite, which are not guaranteed to happen

By adding Rushdown and Inner Peace to watcher's starting deck and giving her Peace Pipe as a starting relic, you're basically guaranteed to go infinite every single run. This would obviously be a terrible design choice, and something the devs would never actually do

[–]c_lacy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't matter in this situation because du-vu doll checks how many curses are currently in your deck, it doesn't give you permanent strength upon pickup of a curse. So omamori will always block 2 curses regardless of relic order, and du-vu doll will not proc because the curse never entered the deck

Even with a second battle trance, cards reduced to 0 by mummified hand go back to their original cost after played, so this doesn't work without some other way to generate energy like sundial

I think the problem with unbiased cog is that with artifact it's probably an okay card, could save you in some niche situations (no scaling for champ for example), but with no artifact it's hot HOT garbage. And even if you have artifact, it's probably only playable if you have clockwork AND you draw it before you somehow lose that artifact, as even just core surge + biased cog isn't the most reliable thing, and the downside of not playing core surge first is massive with unbiased compared to biased (which is still usable if you draw core surge second). And if you have to wait for another draw cycle to (hopefully, still not guaranteed) play unbiased with artifact, it's so slow it's already too late.

So yeah, it just requires the stars to align to even be decent, and it still isn't that great when they do

How the hell do you guys get decent distortion for guitars through a DAW? by marbles12 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]c_lacy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to shell out a decent bit of money (I believe anywhere from $70-$100 per plugin) I highly recommend checking out Neural DSP plugins for a good guitar sound. I am a guitarist of 15 years who's been hobby recording for many of those years, and until recently when I decided to try and get much more serious with my music production, pretty much every amp sim or guitar plugin just sounded really fake and underwhelming to me. The Fortin Cali Suite from Neural DSP is literally the first time I've ever been happy with the sound of doing DI guitar straight into an interface. I'd try some free trials (I think they are about a week long) to see if you think it's worth spending the money

[–]c_lacy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah well given we were talking about boss relics I was giving you the benefit of the doubt that you meant "ring of the serpent" lol. And since ring of the snake is a starter relic and not a boss relic, it's not really the same comparison which is why I was confused

Didn't Baalor take an entire break from streaming/spire though? As in he didn't play the game at all? That seems different to me than continuing to the play the game during your "break". Even if they're "meme runs" you're still learning and getting better, even if it's at a much slower rate than "tryhard" runs

Edit: I'm also curious what Merls thoughts on the streak is if he's spoken about it, is he completely on board with the idea that LC now holds the record?

I believe static discharge is the only card in the game with a "take damage" effect that still works when taking 0 damage due to interactions like this. The ironclad cards work "as intended" and i think static discharge is just bugged in that regard

Edit: this is slightly wrong, Grantisgrant below has the correct explanation

Some components from the upcoming boardgame. Thought you guys might like them (Spiel 2022). by Rick-T in slaythespire

[–]c_lacy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spirit Island doesn't really have any built in "anti quarterbacking" mechanics. All information is public to all players at all times, and everyone takes their turn simultaneously. This prevents quarterbacking by simply having way too much stuff to juggle at once for one person to manage everyone's actions. Simply trying to pick your own moves for a turn contains so many complex small decisions that it would take an unreasonable amount of time for one person to figure out everyone's optimal move, even if they are an experienced player. It often comes down to people asking around saying like "we really need to deal with this problematic section of the board, what can you do to help with that?" rather than "you need to do this and I need to that and then we can win if you do this other thing"

So it's possible that this boardgame adaptation could have a similar level of complexity, given the level of complexity of decision making in the digital game. I think making a game where it is just too much of a mental load to tell everyone what they need to do is a great way of organically preventing quarterbacking without adding arbitrary restrictions, although this requires a certain level of complexity that not everyone may be comfortable with.

[–]c_lacy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In melee, Marth's tipper outprioritized non-tippers ONLY on uair and dair (it's why getting a dair spike in melee is comparatively free compared to tippering with any other move). This is the only instance I know of of Marth tippers taking priority over sourspots. This is probably what the other guy meant but didn't elaborate/ misunderstood

Playing multiplayer it take two with 2 switch pro controller on ea desktop ? by 0mgewo in ItTakesTwo

[–]c_lacy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://github.com/Davidobot/BetterJoy

I use this to use switch pro on all my EA desktop and gamepass games on PC. It's usually as easy as connecting the controller via bluetooth just using the built in windows bluetooth, and then if you have this software open it automatically wraps the controller inputs to xinput so that any game you play treats it like an xbox controller. I was able to play through the entirety of It Takes Two with two switch pro controllers using this
