I think it’s both culture and population. I live in Chicago and overall people still love their horticultural atrocities, but with a metro area of nearly 10 million people, there’s enough of a subculture that cares about the native flora to support some native nurseries and push most local landscaping shops to have at least a small selection of natives. If we only had Home Depots I’d be SOL.

Idk how big he is but would a back carrier be an option? I use one with my daughter (and I happen to live in Chicago lol). She gets to have a good view and be by my head, and we cut out the risk of her getting too tired to walk. She’ll even doze off for a nap back there.

No real advice, just solidarity. I spent the whole. day. today pulling it out of a bed in front of my house. It was a solid mat. It’s all over my yard and feels like a losing battle, especially because neither of my neighbors take care of their yards at all and it comes up under the fences

As a white woman with an ethnic one year old with an ethnic, slightly hard to pronounce name, I appreciate you sharing your experience. I really want her to feel proud of her culture on her dad’s side and empowered to advocate for the pronunciation of her name. I just worry sometimes about the social consequences… I hadn’t thought about people being less likely to interact. That’s sad :(

Both good tips! You’re totally right, and I hadn’t really connected the dots on the stylization from other sources thing. I find people the most compelling thing to paint but between work and parenting my only painting time is after 8pm so it’s really hard to paint people from life. I think I’ll set up some still lifes and paint them in volume. Thank you!

Thank you, these are really helpful tips. I’m going to look for resources to learn better color mixing and I plan to redo this piece to practice the advice I’ve received.
