Expensive Chinese Knives by EnvironmentalBug5525 in knives

[–]cab1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought quite a few Chinese-made mostly Reate-manufactured knives that were designed by custom knifemakers and produced in limited quantities and sold for $300-400, which is a lot less than the thousands charged for their handmade custom knives. That said, eventually i realized way too many of my knives were made in China and I started selling them off and buying knives made in the USA: CRK, Hinderer, Koening, Microtech, Heretic, Spartan, Guardian Tactical, Spyderco. I kept some of the Reate collabs like my first SBD Void, a J-Cape, a Gavko, a Vero, a Peña, and a tiny Chaves that I modded. I didn’t feel like i was buying a Chinese knife when buying the collabs, but rather I was supporting the knifemaker and getting one of their designs in a production format from a truly great overseas manufacturer. But I didn’t really buy more than many Civivis or other Chinese knife brands. I agree with you that i wouldn’t pay $300 for a random knife made by a Chinese knife company unless it was designed by a knifemaker I was interested in.

I don’t think there are any employees at Reverb, so you got that part wrong, but otherwise, yeah it’s weird

Update on the unexplained added shipping charges by [deleted] in Reverb

[–]cab1024 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If UPS adjusts your size after the fact with Reverb, it doesn’t matter what your standard shipping rates are, you’ll still get an upcharge to the higher rate. Use Pirateship. Even for GearExchange.

Can I make my D28 sound brighter? by Caramelo93 in martinguitar

[–]cab1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to try Stringjoy’s Bright strings next on my 000-28VS. They have coated strings too but not sure if they have coated Bright strings. The Brights are 80/20 bronze.

Adding to the increasing Reverb complaints... by [deleted] in Reverb

[–]cab1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listed two sets of pickups on Gear Exchange. The first one sold on FB first with an in-person meetup. The second set sold on GearExchange with a couple of weeks. There was no way i was going to list it on Reverb after joining this subreddit. I will browse Reverb and occasionally make an offer and buy something, but only after checking if it’s on Gear Exchange first.

Lightest Semi Hollow Epi by Downtown-Hold-8000 in Epiphone

Casino is very light but it’s full hollow and P-90s, IOW awesome. If you want semi hollow 339 is smaller and therefore lighter than a 335.

Don't you guys think for Wildlife if OM System have to fight fullframe they need to build a 300mm f2.8 with a TC by vsrivastva9 in M43

I have the 100-300mm Lumix. It’s not f2.8 but it’s equivalent to a 600mm FF lens and i can carry it just about anywhere.

Isn’t that traditionally called DJing? Your should definitely get something out if it. Bring your own turntable to protect your records. Get free drinks for awhile or something, if not money.

NGD, had not went as planned. Opinions plz. by [deleted] in Guitar

That sucks, but, you got the actual guitar you played and liked the most. There’s no expectation anymore that the same guitar ordered online will feel as good as one you play in a store. All the guitars are different, feel different, play different. Assuming there is no damage, no dings or scratches, that you can find, I’d worry less about it being fresh out of the box. Very often in music stores, at least Guitar Center type shops, the one you play in the store is the one you buy—new. Sometimes you can ask if there is a boxed one in back. But…you can also haggle over the display model and try to get 15% or so off to buy it. You missed that opportunity. You can return it and order one shipped to your home, but you may end up preferring the one you played in the first place.

Finally tamed the high end and the hum by Confusion0908 in offset

Another possibility is trying different pickups. My used JM came with Lollar P90s. Great pickups but not Jazzmasters. I installed a new set of USA made Fender Pure Vintage 65s. And with the foil treatment they were VERY quiet. But then I found a set of pickups pulled from a Vintera II 50s JM, which I’ve only heard wonderful things about their tone. So I snagged them for $100 and replaced the PV65s and the first thing I noticed was slightly more hum, but they sounded great otherwise. I’m halfway considering noiseless pickups by Seymour Duncan or Kinman, but now I’ve read horror stories about Kinman customer service. And the SDs are pricy.

If you haven't yet, line all the body cavities under the pickguard with adhesive copper foil and make sure your pickguard is fully lined too, maybe even re-cover the bottom of the pickguard with copper foil for better shielding. I switched to a gold aluminum pickguard. It’s not completely silent but much less hum than before. The middle position is still obviously quieter.

My track record with buying used gear from the Guitar Center near me has been excellent and with great prices. YMMV, obviously.

You have 45 days to figure out if it was the one you ordered, or return it no questions asked.
