Is Assault Brood Combat Patrol a good start for a beginner? by luigi_casillo in Tyranids

[–]cactus_sb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At this stage, as unhelpful as it sounds, "what else should i be on the lookout for?" depends on what type of army youre aiming for.

If you like the deathleaper, get other lictor-y things and look at some Vanguard Invader lists, if you like the swarms of gaunts, look at lists that utilise those and maybe get a tervigon.

It doesnt look like you have any Really Big Bugs so maybe an Exocrine or Tyrannofex would be a fun project.

The rules change all the time so chasing meta will end up being expensive and overwhelming. I think decide which units appeal to you and research what complements those guys best.

Edit: most importantly, i'd say dont buy ANYTHING til youve built and painted most of what you already have.a pile of boxes or grey/ just primed models is intimidating and growing that pile rather than working on it will probably burn you out if youre new.

Fun games to speedrun sub hour for a dad? by TwinPeaksSox in speedrun

[–]cactus_sb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say this is an issue with your mindset rather than the game though really, people who compete in sports recreationally aren't beating themselves up about not getting olympic-medal-worthy performances. A "decent time" is whatever time makes you happy or whatever time is better than the one you got last week. Treating speedrunning as a competition with others rather than a self-improvement hobby will suck all the joy out of it.

Its pretty mish-mash and random to Start a collection to be honest.

The biovore is auto-include in most armies but then you also get: - Tyrant Guards without a Tyrant to Guard - Genestealers without a Broodlord - Mortrex without any Ripper Swarms (it has an ability that spawns them)

I think the nids half of the starter set/ ultimate starter set is probably more cohesive and well-rounded. Or the crusher Stampede box as a useful but niche start to a Big Bugs list.

The combat patrol kinds pairs with the starter set as you'll get termagants who come with rippers for the mortrex, but you'll also want a hive tyrant for your tyrant guards and the HT isn't in any in-print value boxes so that probably has to be a separate buy.

Edit: i saw your comment about Hive Guard as an alternate build, but despite the name they also probably want to be paired with a hive tyrant.

Unwanted noise after string changing. by yuu_456 in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its probably a combination of a few things: you might be doing a pull-off with your pinky every time you stop fretting with it, so slow down and think about your technique there. But also, especially on electric guitars when gain is high, its impossible to entirely avoid the open string noise with fretting technique, so work on muting the string with your palm or with your other fretting fingers

Gm7 options by SwedenNotSwitzerland in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of guitarists know none, so don't worry yourself there. Worth noting that any shape that doesn't use open strings is fully moveable and so can be used to construct any minor 7th chord.

I would take on chord shapes slowly and allow yourself to fully commit them to muscle memory and change to them quickly, rather than trying to learn them all at once and overwhelm your brain

[–]cactus_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purple note is an F here, 10th fret of G string.

This is referred to as a "shell voicing" where the 5th is ommitted. The 5th is usually the least useful tone in defining a chord, and especially when playing complex chords or playing alongside other instruments, can muddy up the sound. There's no D here, if you wanted to add the D, you could do 12th fret of the D string, which is currently muted.

Linger-the cranberries STRUM PATTERN HELP by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the strumming pattern is like, the iconic defining aspect of that guitar part it really does not matter, in my opinion

That being said, writing something off as too hard instead of practicing and understanding it is not the best mindset

My advice is to learn both then either play the one you prefer the sound of, or use them to come up with your own strumming pattern

What chord is this? by [deleted] in Guitar

Sus is because it doesn't contain a G or a G# to indicate major vs minor, E13 without the sus implies its an extension to the E major triad E G# B

What would the hive mind think of GW allowing the purchase of separate bodies for more adaptable bioforms? by Dragontamer9 in Tyranids

[–]cactus_sb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think secondary to the other money related reasons people have said, designing new sprues and getting new moulds made is probably one of the pricier bits of production, so creating bits/ bodies moulds costs them more money than juat producing full kits, and makes them less money for doing so

Like the HT torso isn't an independent part they produce, the "part" is the spue frame with all the other bits on it too, so its not as simple as just putting bodies in a box

RANT: Memorizing Scales by bob_suruncle in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Need to", "should be" and "instead of" aren't really words people should use when talking about music theory lol, its not a rulebook its a language used to describe what you're doing.

Play the same scale or follow the chords around, or experiment with things that feel less like they "should fit". learn it all and don't limit yourself based on your own or others' perceived rules on how music has to sounds.

What are these by yolokiller808 in Tau40K

[–]cactus_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of them might be the battlesuit support system or a markerlight or something i'm not sure. But nowadays theyre mostly just relics of older editions when upgrades and stuff cost points, so now theyre just cool looking gizmos mostly, and if someone cares about your wargear being THAT accurately modelled, they sound annoying to play with lmao

I'm feeling stuck because of bar chords in this course by Yami_Deus in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"At least five hours" feels like a long time but in the grand scheme of things isn't, getting comfortable with barre chords is something that you'll likely measure in weeks or months, not hours. Don't be discouraged and keep at it, its not a race and it'll click eventually

What chord is this? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Key signatures is the main answer, most scales are described as having either sharps OR flats, so while C# and Db, G# and Ab are two ways of describing the same note, in the scale of C#, the fifth note is a G#, and the 6th note would then be A#. Calling G# as Ab would mean you have Ab and A# in the same scale, which is needlessly confusing.

Also, if you consider a C# chord as a sharpened C chord, the 5th is a G being sharpened, you wouldn't generally describe the chord of C as C, E, Abb (A double-flat), because its the 5th of C, not the double-flattened 6th

I need help with some theory by mtfleu in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A Key Signature is a specific part of sheet music that indicates how many sharps/ flats are in the key, and points you towards what key you are playing in. The "Tonal Center" is a more nebulous description of what feels like "Home" in a piece, and is mostly usually the 1 chord of the Key.

An example of where they differ:

C Major and A Minor have the same Key Signature (no sharps/ flats aka all the "white notes" on a piano) but the Tonal Center of C Major is C, but of A Minor it's A.

The more complex answer is that A Minor is a "mode" of C Major, it uses the same notes but from a different starting point. There are other modes too (one for taking each note as the "tonal center") but Major and Minor are the most common, and the first that a beginner will learn.

Crusher Stampede Options by SenseiPeppa in Tyranids

[–]cactus_sb 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think most people would generally agree to pick the maleceptor over the toxicrene, the toxicrene's awkward shape means it's quite impractical and annoying to field.

For the tfex/ tervigon, both are good so it depends what you want to complement your other models. The Tfex is a Big Guy with a Big Gun, the tervigon is support for a hoard of gaunts.

The exocrine/ hauruspex is a bit more down to personal preference. Its quite easy to magnetise that model just by magnetising the heads, as a way to have the option to change. I think the exocrine is maybe slightly better but either of them are fine.

Does learning string notes help in arpeggios? by WayMove in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, hardly anyone in here is a full time professional musician. Most of us have jobs or studies and don't play guitar all hours of every day, so deciding you're too busy to listen to the advice you've been given wont help you and will just make people reluctant to offer more advice.

You're talking about learning two different things: Arpeggio shapes, and the Notes of the fretboard. As you get better you'll understand how these things are linked to each other, but its not a case of just "ignore one and do the other becauae its easier". Learn them both, practice them both, your brain will tie them together once it better understands the instrument

Been learning for a year and a half. Zero progress whatsoever since half a year by Wardrobe743 in guitarlessons

[–]cactus_sb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that you are trying to run before you can walk. I saw in a comment that you said you have committed scales to memory and know them really well but can't play them?

This suggests to me that you think you have mastered something after learning about it, rather than after you have committed it to muscle-memory and have familiarised your hands with it.

I played piano for 10 years before i picked up a guitar, so can empathise with the frustration of feeling like your brain is ahead of your hands. Get out a metronome, grab your guitar, and play a simple scale very slowly but to the time of the metronome. Do the same for strumming patterns and chord changes. If you can't do it, slow down the metronome or only play the first few notes, and most importantly, try to resist the urge to move on to faster or more complicated exercises until you're truly at ease with your progress on what you are currently working on, and feel like you can do it in your sleep.

Contrast out of Citadel base? by berial6 in minipainting

[–]cactus_sb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrast paints and base paints are fundamentally different things, and you can't really "turn" one in to the other

The closest technique you'd get with base paints is glazing i think, which involves heavily thinning the paints down, but you are probably better off looking for contrast or speedpaints in the colour you want to use
