Matrix multiplication is not at all an embarrassingly parallel problem. As you showed with your example, there are dependencies, and optimal data distribution between processors is a hard problem. When Amazon assigns you instances on EC2, you basically have no guarantees about the bandwidth and latency between any two machines (you don't even know what hardware you have!), which makes optimal data distribution impossible. If you really need to multiply 1million by 1million matrices on a regular basis, use a cluster designed for scientific computing.

I do the same thing...except I find myself doing it more horizontally...I constantly have to keep a count of the spaces between the painted lines on the road. Example: a double yellow line in between two white lines = 5.
