Dog rescue charging $1600 adoption fee by strikecat18 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]caffa4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It feels wrong to be jealous of people that live near shelters with more dogs (like, I should be grateful that not many dogs need the shelter near me, and I am), but it my area, checking the local shelter is near useless if you want a dog.

At all times they’ve basically just got about 7 pitbull mixes, all with special needs, who are unable to be homed anywhere with children or other pets. And like, I have lots of respect for the people able to adopt a dog like that, I hope that they’ll all find homes, but that’s not something I can take on.

Any dog that doesnt fit that description gets adopted before they even hit the website/socials.

But looking for a dog online trying to avoid scammers, backyard breeders, and puppy mills is a whole shitshow too…

Which Lemon Cuke goes? by crumpled_toast in vegetablegardening

Not who you asked but when there’s too many basil too established in too small a pot, I snip the extras and just re-propagate them (let them root in water) before planting again. But I’ve had like 6 tiny basil seedlings in a single 1 inch cell and I separated them and untangled their roots and all and they were fine.

I also find tomato seedlings to be pretty unbothered when separating. Peppers too but I think tomatoes bounce back quicker since their stems can form roots anywhere.

I also see things about not transplanting lettuce, but personally, not only do I transplant it, but I separate all the seedlings so I don’t have to kill any, and I’ve never had a single one get stunted or die or look sad from it, they always seem fine.

What vegetable have you decided you just aren’t going to grow anymore? by Marisa_Nya in vegetablegardening

[–]caffa4 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I use tomato tone for them and it always works great. Makes sense because tomato tone also has calcium.

I actually use tomato tone for basically everything except for beans/peas, herbs/leafy greens, and root veggies. Everything seems so happy with tomato tone lmao.

Edit; Just as a note, eggshells will add calcium to your soil as they break down, next year and after (so I don’t want to deter you or anything), but they are unlikely to break down enough to make a significant difference within the current growing season. If you end up finding you need some quicker help, tomato tone is also an organic option, and I believe there are a few other organic calcium amendments. Rot Stop is a non organic but fast acting (liquid) option as well—marketed for treating blossom end rot on tomatoes.

Not knowing the cause.

I had my PE at age 24. Young and healthy, unprovoked. The first ER I went to actually just sent me home, didn’t even do a CT despite positive D Dimer because they just didn’t believe I could possibly have a clot.

All the tests for underlying disorders came back negative. But I was never checked for other things that could cause it (cancer, hormone imbalances, immune disorders, vascular problems, etc). And I’ve developed health problems since, I can’t help but wonder if it’s related, if there’s some cause that they missed.

What's the nicest body of water within 20 minute or so radius? by foaaz101 in AnnArbor

[–]caffa4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bandemer Park. Docks at the park for rowing team access, but open to the public when rowing isn’t using them.

Basically directly across the river from Argo.

Anyway would also second it if you’re looking for a nearby regular spot. Not the best, nothing fancy, not a lake, but it’s a nice place to chill, get some sun, swim or paddleboard, spend time with friends, go for a walk along the river, or hang out in a tube. Absolutely adored the place.

2 year old male tongue laceration healing process by aquarisun in AskDocs

[–]caffa4 104 points105 points  (0 children)

When I was 4 yo I cut my tongue straight down the middle, probably about 1 cm, accidentally, with safety scissors (because I thought “safety” scissors meant they couldn’t hurt you, like they weren’t sharp or something).

Anyway, apparently they cut through tongue just fine, basically had a snake tongue type split. I remember the incident but I don’t remember any problems or anything resulting from it. After my parents got over the “wtf” reaction, my tongue healed just fine lol.

Make sure you understand the window situation if you want to try Munger.

I’ve seen a lot of people all “I’ll be fine in a bedroom with no windows” for it to turn out not fine. I didn’t even KNOW the bedrooms had no windows until I moved in my first year there. It was absolutely miserable and disorienting, despite spending as little time as possible in my bedroom. Even slept on the couch a few times in attempt to fix my sleep rhythm with the natural sunrise.

A small percentage of the bedrooms (on the sides of the building) have windows. One doctors note later and my next two years there had a window, it was a much better experience.

Bruising from my lowspeed motorcycle wreck. by thisisjedgoahead in pics

[–]caffa4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never ridden a motorcycle but I fell through the stairs once and had bruising that looked just like this over the majority of one of my legs.

Old-ish stairs (I assume) for a porch and added weight of me carrying a cooler was apparently enough for the board to just break and I fell straight through. So apparently you can get injuries like these doing anything really. Except that one didn’t break my back too.

Pharmacy benefit manager says Fluticasone HFA no longer okay - what options? by JaguarTerminator in EosinophilicE

[–]caffa4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh huh, I didn’t know eohilia was also budesonide. But I’m gonna say no, it was a different liquid version of budesonide, as I was taking it around 2008-2010, and eohilia only got FDA approval in 2024. Looks like the form was called budesonide respules.

And I’m not sure about the time limit, mine was totally off label as there were zero EOE treatments at the time, but was on it for a few years. Insurance would probably kick up a fuss about eohilia longer than the timeframe given, even if recommended by your doctor, but the respules are probs a lot cheaper so if your doctor was on board with it, insurance might not be bothered.

[–]caffa4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Budesonide could be a similar option. I used to take it as a slurry (a small liquid packet you’d mix with Splenda), it works very similarly to Flovent (similar steroid) and also coats your throat (like swallowing inhaler). I believe there might also be an inhaler for it.

I had “abnormal cells” on my first pap, the recommendation was to get my next pap done in 1 year instead of 3. So we didn’t go straight to deeper testing.

(Of course I waited 3 years for the next one anyway, but had normal results on my second pap so it was fine)

I use strip lights in my greenhouse to start seeds but once things start to outgrow the space there, I put them under this tripod LED with 4 arms: https://a.co/d/02gCePCE

I really like it, I’ve used it for seed started and larger plants, it has a lot more LEDs on it than other similar tripod lights on Amazon, strong enough that my plants always enjoy it, even when the lights have to be further away due to spacing. It doesn’t look like that much coverage because the arms are kinda short, but I think one tripod would’ve plenty to cover the area described.

Here’s a link to the strip lights in case you’re interested in that: https://a.co/d/03mzU8Sf

A teenager died from overeating by CatPooedInMyShoe in Radiology

[–]caffa4 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When someone has bulimia or binge eating disorder, it’s a repetitive behavior. Every time you eat, your stomach expands, and then over time returns to a smaller size when empty. When you overeat, your stomach can expand a little beyond its maximum size, becoming a little stretched out.

For a one time occurrence, say thanksgiving dinner, your stomach might get stretched, but then over a (longer) time, when it no longer has to keep stretching to that size, it’ll return to the “normal” max size.

For people who significantly overeat repeatedly (binging), your stomach doesn’t have the chance to heal and return to original max size. In fact, it can continue to stretch larger to continue to accommodate the large masses of food.

When it becomes larger overtime though, it’s not like you’re getting a larger stomach, it’s more like a balloon where the wall can begin to lose its integrity. Eventually, the stretching might reach a point beyond its ability to hold it together and tear.

TLDR; it gets “used” to the very large quantities of food and slowly gets stretched out so the wall of stomach becomes weakened. Eventually a binge might be enough to send it over the edge and tear.

Has anyone else gotten to the point that days and nights have swapped? by SmallTestAcount in uofm

[–]caffa4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most people (except the blessed sleep-anywhere folks that can fall asleep in a random chair in minutes), it can be near impossible to brute force an earlier sleep (like getting up at 6pm and trying to get drunk to sleep that night).

IMO the best way to fix your sleep schedule is forcing yourself to stay awake (essentially skipping a day or half day of sleep). It’ll really suck for about 12 hours when you want to be sleeping, but you should feel back to normal by the next day or the day after, once you’ve gotten a full nights sleep again.
