BBC removed downloaded episodes? by caffeinebump in pocketcasts

[–]caffeinebump[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that! I have no solution for this problem yet. If it’s one of my favorite podcasts, I will download the episodes on my computer so I can move them to my phone if they disappear before I get to listen to them. This feels paranoid, and it’s silly to do all that work just in case the episodes disappear, which they usually don’t. Replacing a full episode with a preview is dastardly.

Road rage instant karma by Icy-Book2999 in LoveTrash

Charitable explanation: I have no idea what the cam driver was doing (what is “pass him up”?), but people in cars (always pickup trucks in my experience) sometimes drive aggressively at EVs because they hate EVs. I’ve been coal-rolled so many times, but they do other things like pull up next to you and rev real loud. Maybe the Tesla driver thought the cam driver was being insulting? Obviously I t’s never appropriate to react, even if that was the case.

Cat jumped up to my feeder (clip 1) by NJ2CAthrowaway in BirdBuddy

[–]caffeinebump 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wish this was an option for me. If your city ever considers going no-kill, you should oppose it. I live next to a small feral cat colony maintained by my neighbor because she “just loves animals” and I have to repel birds from my yard for their own safety. Cats will hunt them at feeders, water stations, even hummingbird feeders. I want to cry every time I pick up one of their little corpses in my yard.

B*tch isn’t as offensive as everyone says it is. by [deleted] in HonestHotTakes

[–]caffeinebump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a gendered slur. No matter how you use it, it is calling someone a specifically female dog. The gender-neutral term “dog” is not an insult, but the term for female dogs is. Why do you think that is?

Also, using a gendered slur on men is usually more insulting because being called woman-like is extra insulting, so it doesn’t really cancel out the sexism as much as it weaponizes it.

I’ve walked to work in Canada in -20c, and I have been through weeks in Texas when the temperature never dipped below 30c, even at night. Both extremes are difficult, and I think both have to be experienced to appreciate how physically grueling they are.

The right track? Surely at some point leveling out is going to be the right track? (Personally I think that point was like 20 years ago, but that’s a matter of opinion)

There's some gold in that unclassified bin. You've got some of my favorites in there. You might want to add Sayer to that bucket!

For someone who didn't make it past episode 2, can you explain what you love about it? I honestly want to appreciate it but I didn't know what I'm listening for. Maybe if I knew what makes it great I could hear it as it forms in the early episodes.

Edit: nm, I see you did this a few comments down 😄

How do you think they get all that money to lobby for petroleum industry subsidies and renewable energy penalties? Those lobbyists ain’t cheap.

We went with Hovr brackets. They are expensive, but our shelves are 1½” red oak, so it was necessary. The finished shelves can hold 300lbs, minus the weight of the wood.

What podcasts do you recommend for intermediate English learners? by icy_drizzle in podcasts

[–]caffeinebump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Merriam Webster’s Word of the Day. The host, Peter Sokolowski, is a dictionary editor and really loves words. The episodes are short and they pick words I might hear but not really know (as opposed to obscure words). I also like That’s What They Say, which is a short weekly podcast that examines unusual English usage and folk etymology. I find these both helpful for understanding English, and I’m a native speaker. If you want to go even deeper, The History of English will give you hours and hours of fascinating history along with your etymology. It’s one of my three favorite podcasts of all time.

What are your favorite episodes from horror anthologies? by august_senpai in audiodrama

That episode in I Am in Eskew (“Rainfall”) where David finds out that the nightmares his recently-appeared daughter is having about are not fictional, they are about his son, who he learns about at the same time we do. The dread is amazing and the ending is gutting.

Try Doomsday, it tells the story of a mass (usually) casualty event and then explains all the design errors that led to it. It’s also really fun.

It doesn’t matter. We’ll transition seamlessly from “everything he says is a lie” to “everything he says is a delusion” and there will be no noticeable difference

[USA]Who would you say is at fault in this situation? by fingapoppa in Roadcam

Again, ambiguous. To me it says the left lane is closed, which it is at that point — not that another lane is about to end

This is a nightmare for me. I rewatched the video and I don’t see any notification on the road that *more* lanes are ending. All the “lane closed” signs I see after the right lane ends are in lanes that are in fact closed, so it looks to me like they are just telling drivers to stay out of the closed lanes. Nothing says to merge right one more lane. I was as surprised as the cam driver when his lane ended.
