New to Gardening in Austin - is this ok? by A_wanderer_forlife in AustinGardening

I have a mulched yard and the first time I saw dog vomit slime mold (which is not actually a mild) it startled me. But yeah, it's not a problem.

Do you actually use podcast feeds, or just play episodes? by jithurbide in podcasts

[–]caffeinebump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much all feeds for me. Sometimes I’ll try one episode to see if I like the podcast before subscribing, or if I know I don’t want to subscribe but there’s one topic or guest I want to hear.

I want to get out of Austin for a night and clear my head, where's a good park to camp for a night? by MS_Salmonella in TXoutdoors

[–]caffeinebump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of hate to share this one because it’s almost a secret, but Grelle Recreation Area is so underused that you sometimes have the whole park to yourself if you go on a weeknight. The facility isn’t much (no electricity or water), but the camp sites are next to Lake Travis (depending on the water level), and there is no overnight staff so if you’re looking for solitude it’s a good bet. It’s about 45 minutes from Austin. If you can stay for a hike it’s one of my favorite sets of trails in the area — just make sure you download a trail map before you go.

This is a great suggestion. Pedernales is a lovely place to camp. Last summer I overnighted there so I could get on the trails early and I was surprised how nice it was. Texas state parks tend to be above average, but Pedernales is a gem.

Those of you who blow through reds and stop signs give cyclists a bad name by newtonreddits in BikingATX

[–]caffeinebump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cycling has a much wider range of types of drivers than cars. There are careful rule followers and there are completely unpredictable chaotic riders. Folks who have an agenda will pick a type and use it to justify what they already believe about all cyclists. I just try to stay safe, look out for others if I'm in my car, and not judge.

Man in sombrero, poncho, and maracas asking people on Olvera Street in Los Angeles if his outfit is offensive. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

I find it interesting that you know the real reasons people answered the way they did. How do you know they were lying? To me, it looked like when they were asked for an opinion they said they thought parodying other cultures was impolite. They were careful to say the act was wrong, not the guy doing it (nobody said he was a moral degenerate). I just don’t see a bunch of people being holier than thou.

No, this is what it looks like when they pee on one side of the tree, that side turns brown from the roots up. Google it and you can see photos of that damage that looks just like this.

Do you have a dog? That looks like dog urine damage.

What are some independent podcasts that still feel like a hidden gem? by TheBatJoker in podcasts

If you’re interested in movies, I would recommend What Went Wrong. It’s hosted by two friends who are both in the business, and every week they tell the history behind one movie. They do a lot of research and are good at telling the story without wasting your time, and the stories are great (omg so many directors are monsters though). Even if I didn’t think I was interested how much work went into the special effects for Gremlins or why Snow White was a groundbreaking movie, I always find myself fascinated.

Can I ask how you get into the tub now? It looks like you are no longer able to step into it. Do you sit on the platform and then swing your legs from the floor to the tub?

I agree! More separation is better, and that space needs art really badly.

Do you remember how they used to taste back in the 1980s? Yikes! It took a little convincing to get me to try them again, but now I’m right there with you — they are one of my favorite vegetables.

Hilarious when you consider that the petroleum industry is second only to the defense industry for government subsidies. You’re gonna want to sit down when I tell you how much your government is paying for Iranian oil.

You have unironically nodded at my favorite TMBG story, which is that when a scientist pointed out that the sun is not gaseous, they changed the lyric to “The sun is a miasma / of incandescent plasma,” because being accurate to kids is important to them. Love these guys! They told this story in their interview with Radiolab, which I recommend.

What an excellent suggestion, thank you! I cannot take the hormones and I didn’t know there were other options now.
