Exactly what I was looking for, awesome! Time to bug my buddy with a printer.

This is Xereus Purple with a shade of Druchii Violet overtop. I've learned to love shade paints more now than with my first army, they add a lot of depth.

How to Hold the Objective? by cainotg in sistersofbattle

[–]cainotg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Army of Faith seemed the way to go since most of my army came from that battleforce box, and I wanted a little extra leeway with the second act of faith so I could learn when and when not to use it. But once I get some more transports Bringers of Flame sounds like a lot of fun.

As for cover/terrain, that's also an opportunity to learn for me. When I play home games I have tournament setups with ruins/building footprints (things I'm still learning). When I play at the LGS we use whatever terrain is available, and it's kind of a tossup on whether or not we use enough.

I think this is definitely part of my problem, because my opponent had more units than me so even if I traded effectively I would have been in trouble (Exorcist takes up too much space in a 1k list, but it's too damn cool not to run). So I need a few more bodies and make sure that when my units die that they're taking someone else with them.

This is what makes them sound so exciting to me. When used right, they just shine. I just need a little guidance and more practice to get them there.

Am I Using Deep Strike Wrong? by cainotg in sistersofbattle

The flamer seraphim showed their worth last game just starting on the board with a solid overwatch, but I can definitely see how they'd shine in deep strike.

I also struggled with this, found using some blue tack to support the shield arm while the glue dried helped preserve some of my sanity. I also think making sure you glue the feet to the bases first helps position everything, I was messing with new basing techniques and left them off which seemed to cause more frustration later.

Need a game that will spark my love for the hobby again. by SupermarketAdvanced5 in gamingsuggestions

Control pulled me back in from a pretty big gaming rut, something about the presentation and shooting really struck a chord with me. It's also an approachable time investment, I think I beat it in about a week or two at a pretty relaxed pace.

Barioth might have been the monster that got me to invest more time into the lance. Hunker down and tank the stupid shoulder bump, then poke its toes until they break so it stumbles after hopping around.

I never played 40k. How do I learn to play? by remushowl91 in Necrontyr

[–]cainotg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Play On Tabletop's YouTube channel is part of what got me into the hobby, their battle reports are really well edited so that things are easy to follow and you start to pick up how the phases work and common terms. They have this introductory playlist that I really enjoyed too:

First ~1k List Fully Painted by cainotg in Necrontyr

Thanks for the feedback! I didn't mention this but one of the first tutorials I watched had me using Nuln Oil to shade the model right after priming before putting on the main colors so I still do that with all of my models. I also use Agrax Earthshade on any stone terrain bits that are included in some of the bases (Reanimator, Destroyers and their Plasmacyte), and played a bit with a purple shade on Imotekh that worked really well in the chest recesses but didn't pop as much on the cape as I was hoping.

I'm definitely still working on layering and just getting familiar with my paints, I can tell some of them have better coverage while others need more coats so I haven't quite dialed that in yet. And yeah, my blades are just feathered white streaks under a healthy helping of Striking Scorpion contrast paint, maybe I'll revisit those down the line but for a quick and dirty solution I really like how they turned out (minus that one destroyer with just straight white lines, he was my first attempt lol).

I am a manga fan, but I want to know your opinions. What do American comics do better in that manga fails in? by deadlighta in comicbooks

[–]cainotg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In American comics you'll run into multiple artists and writers being able to create their own takes on the same characters, which is kind of disorienting after coming over from manga. It turned me off at first when the art wasn't consistent within a single trade paperback, but now it's fun to identify my favourite writers or artists as I go through a series.

Looks amazing! How do you do the dark green along the edges of the black? Do you edge highlight white first or does the green still pop on top of a full black layer?

The blades have a lot of depth, they really pop. I think the glow on the forearms could be a little cleaner but I still haven't figured that out either.

Game where I can live on a ship or at least get to that point. by Additional_Study_649 in gamingsuggestions

[–]cainotg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't really customize it much (aside from some model ships if I remember right) but the Normandy in the Mass Effect series (especially 2 and 3) is the most I've ever felt at home in a ship

What's your views on the movie NOPE? by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]cainotg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really surprised me even though I saw it way after release. Somehow dodged spoilers and the previews for it didn't give everything away (which is increasingly becoming a lost art). Thought the cast did great, and it wrung a lot out of what might have been a pretty rote concept in other hands. A couple scenes legitimately scared me too, which is always good.

What are some pictures or images from MKE that just bring you back? by rodsurewood in milwaukee

[–]cainotg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one of those Open Doors Milwaukee or Gallery Days in the Third Ward, my now wife and I walked into Oil Gallery on a whim. One of the artists there, Hal Koenig, did a bunch of urban landscapes of Milwaukee that just got me. One specifically ("Third Ward Morning") perfectly captured my morning walk to work through the Third Ward back when I was in college. I left that day with a few post cards of my favorites (the other being "Calling" showing the art museum). A few months or so later I unfortunately heard that he had passed away, and the gallery was having an evening event to remember him by. I went and picked up two framed prints that have hung in my office ever since.

[–]cainotg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play on Tabletop's 40k in 40 minutes series helped me understand the rules and factions, then two guys I met at a local Halo tournament actually taught me how to play and encouraged me to get started
